Inflammatory syndromes, including those caused by infection, are a major cause of hospital admissions among children and are often misdiagnosed because of a lack of advanced molecular diagnostic tools. In this study, we explored the utility of circulating cell-free RNA (cfRNA) in plasma as an analyte for the differential diagnosis and characterization of pediatric inflammatory syndromes. We profiled cfRNA in 370 plasma samples from pediatric patients with a range of inflammatory conditions, including Kawasaki disease (KD), multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), viral infections, and bacterial infections.

The best strategy for preventing the further spread of these respiratory viruses worldwide is to administer a vaccine capable of targeting both viruses. Here, we show that a novel monoglycosylated vaccine designed based on the influenza virus HA conserved domain fused with the SARS-CoV-2 spike-RBD domain (HSSR) can present proper antigenicity that elicits sufficient neutralization efficacy against various SARS-CoV-2 variants while simultaneously providing broad protection against H1N1 viruses in mice.

Design: Retrospective comparative case series.
Methods: This retrospective study included 280 eyes of 140 patients (35 children and 105 adults) with SJS/TEN treated between 2010 and 2020.
Influenza epidemics and pandemics caused by newly emerging virus strains highlight an urgent need to develop a universal vaccine against viruses. Previously, a monoglycosylated X-181 vaccine demonstrated that the HA possessing a single N-acetylglucosamine at each N-glycosylation site is superior to confer broader protection in mice than conventional vaccines. However, the greatest challenge in conducting clinical trials is the need to develop robust manufacturing processes capable of producing vaccines at the pilot scale with the desired stability, potency, and efficacy.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we compared the performance of equation methods for predicting all-cause mortality; we used 24-h creatinine clearance (24-h CrCl), equation-based eGFRs, and a new eGFR estimating equation weighting for population 24-h urine creatinine excretion rate (U-CER).

Purpose: To determine the association of corneal sensitivity and tear functions on the prognosis of eyes after posttraumatic recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES).
Methods: Patients were enrolled retrospectively and had unilateral RCES and a history of ocular surface trauma. A corneal sensitivity test and tear function test (tear break-up time and Schirmer test) were performed at three time points (month 1 to month 3, month 3 to month 6, and month 6 to month 12).
Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the final diagnosis of thyroid nodules before surgery. It is important to further improve the indeterminate FNAC diagnosis results using computerized cytological features. This retrospective cross-sectional study included 240 cases, of whom 110 had histologic diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancers (PTC), 100 had nodular/adenomatous goiters/hyperplasia (benign goiters), 10 had follicular/Hurthle cell carcinomas, and 20 had follicular adenomas.

The knockdown of ATF1 expression significantly up-regulated neuroectoderm (NE) genes but not mesoderm, endoderm, and trophectoderm genes. Of note, down-regulation or knockout of ATF1 with short hairpin RNA (shRNA), small interfering RNA (siRNA), or clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) was sufficient to up-regulate sex-determining region Y-box (SOX)2 and paired box 6 (PAX6) expression under the undifferentiated or differentiated conditions, whereas overexpression of ATF1 suppressed NE differentiation.

We performed an observational study using a 10-year database to analyze the association between red blood cell (RBC) transfusion and outcomes in patients with UGIB in the emergency department (ED).
Method And Findings: All adult patients with UGIB were identified through diagnostic codes.
Objective: To ascertain the genetic and clinical characteristics of the GGCCTG hexanucleotide repeat expansion in the nucleolar protein 56 gene (NOP56) in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), sporadic ataxia, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in Taiwan.
Methods: We conducted clinical and molecular genetic studies of 109 probands with molecularly unassigned SCA from 512 SCA pedigrees, 323 healthy controls, 502 patients with sporadic ataxia syndromes, and 144 patients with ALS. Repeat-primed PCR assays and PCR-fragment analysis for the number of short hexanucleotide repeats (<40 units) were performed to ascertain NOP56 hexanucleotide repeat expansion.
Background: Dexmedetomidine reduces cytokine production in septic patients and reduces inflammation and mortality in experimental models of endotoxemia and sepsis. This study investigated whether dexmedetomidine attenuates endothelial dysfunction, intestinal microcirculatory dysfunction, and intestinal epithelial barrier disruption in endotoxemic rats.
Methods: Ninety-two male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the following four groups: (1) Sham; (2) lipopolysaccharide, received IV lipopolysaccharide 15 and 10 mg/kg at 0 and 120 min; (3) dexmedetomidine, received IV dexmedetomidine for 240 min; and (4) lipopolysaccharide + dexmedetomidine, received both lipopolysaccharide and dexmedetomidine.
