Few studies have compared the efficacy and safety of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). We compared the real-world effectiveness and safety of tofacitinib (TOF) and filgotinib (FIL) as induction therapy for UC by propensity score-matching analysis. We enrolled 230 patients with active UC who received either TOF (n = 197) or FIL (n = 33) as induction therapy.

Inhibition of skin fibrosis via regulation of Th17/Treg imbalance in systemic sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an idiopathic systemic connective tissue disorder characterized by fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, with growing interest in the imbalance between Th17 cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the disease's pathogenesis. Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Hp), a natural intestinal parasite of mice, is known to induce Tregs in the host. We aimed to investigate the effects of Hp-induced Tregs on bleomycin-induced dermal fibrosis and clarify the role of the Th17/Treg balance in SSc fibrosis.

Chronological changes in etiology, pathological and imaging findings in primary liver cancer from 2001 to 2020.

Purpose: To achieve a historical perspective, the chronological changes in primary liver cancer over a 20-year period were investigated at a single institution, focusing on shifts in etiology and the impact on imaging and pathological findings using The Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study of surgically resected primary liver cancer in 680 patients from 2001 to 2020 resulted in 434 patients with 482 nodules being analyzed. Dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging and the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System 2018 classification were employed.

A surgical case of right atrial wall perforation caused by an invasive angiosarcoma.

Cardiac angiosarcoma is a rare, diagnostically elusive disease with a poor prognosis. Herein, we describe the case of a 61-year-old man who presented with cardiac tamponade caused by perforation of the right atrial wall resulting from an invasive angiosarcoma. The tumour, which had spread throughout the entire right atrial free wall, was resected under cardiopulmonary bypass.

Impact of the ratio of fecal short-chain fatty acids to lactic acid concentration on postoperative infectious complications after pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Background: We previously reported that the balance of short-chain fatty acids and lactic acid in feces affects postoperative infectious complications after major hepatectomy. However, the effect remains unclear in pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Methods: Preoperative fecal samples were collected from 210 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy at 2 institutions between January 2019 and June 2021.
