Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of plasma lipidomic signatures, particularly lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) species, as potential biomarkers for adolescent obesity.
  • A cohort of 103 individuals, divided into overweight/obese and normal weight groups, underwent lipidomic profiling over a median follow-up of 7.1 years, revealing significant associations between specific LPC species and BMI.
  • The findings highlight alterations in LPC levels in childhood obesity, suggesting their potential use in identifying metabolic profiles and guiding early preventative interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial noncoding RNAs that help regulate human mRNA protein production after transcription, but their relationship with Argonaute (Ago) proteins is more complex than previously thought.
  • There is a significant excess of miRNAs compared to Ago proteins in HeLa cells, suggesting that not all miRNAs are directly bound by Agos, leading to the possibility of miRNA-mRNA interactions without Agos.
  • While all human Agos can repress these miRNA-mRNA interactions, only Ago2 has the ability to cleave small interfering RNA-mRNA duplexes, indicating a distinct role of Agos in regulating gene expression.

Azo dyes are among the oldest man-made chemicals and they are still widely used in the textile, printing and the food industries. About 10% - 15% of the total dyes used in the industry is released into the environment during the manufacturing and usage. Some dyes and some of their N-substituted aromatic bio-transformation products are toxic and/or carcinogenic and therefore these dyes are considered to be envionmental pollutants and health hazards.

In this study, advanced oxidation process utilizing Fenton's reaction was investigated for the decolorization and degradation of two commercial dyes viz., Red M5B, Blue MR and H-acid, a dye intermediate used in chemical industries for the synthesis of direct, reactive and azo dyes. Effect of Fe2 +, H2O2, pH, and contact time on the degradation of the dyes was studied.
