In this study, we developed the autonomous lab (ANL), which is a system based on robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to conduct biotechnology experiments and formulate scientific hypotheses. This system was designed with modular devices and Bayesian optimization algorithms, allowing it to effectively run a closed loop from culturing to preprocessing, measurement, analysis, and hypothesis formulation. As a case study, we used the ANL to optimize medium conditions for a recombinant Escherichia coli strain, which overproduces glutamic acid.

In this study, the concept of rheo-optics was applied to explore the flow birefringence induced by the stress components along the camera's optical axis since it is often overlooked in the traditional theories of photoelastic flow measurement. A novel aspect of this research is that it involved conducting polarization measurements on simple shear flows, specifically from a perspective in which a shear-velocity gradient exists along the camera's optical axis. A parallel-plate-type rheometer and a polarization camera are employed for these systematic measurements.

In light of the emerging importance of the gut microbiome in human health, there is a need to improve the colonization efficiency of therapeutic bacteria called probiotics. Despite their recognized potential, artificially administered bacteria exhibit poor colonization in the intestine, limiting their therapeutic efficacy. Addressing this challenge requires innovative strategies; however, reported examples are limited.
