Sc-Catalyzed Asymmetric [2 + 2] Annulation of 2-Alkynylnaphthols with Dienes to Access Cyclobutene Frameworks.

Herein, we introduce a scandium-catalyzed synthetic strategy that provides access to a diverse and functionalized array of cyclobutene frameworks adorned with a quaternary carbon center. This approach broadens the synthetic repertoire of 2-alkynylnaphthols with alkenes, offering a versatile platform for the construction of complex molecular architectures. The asymmetric catalytic [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction demonstrates a wide substrate scope and an impressive functional group tolerance, yielding products with high efficiency, up to 97% yield, and excellent enantiomeric excess of up to 97%.

High-sensitivity whispering-gallery mode sensor for simultaneous measurement of humidity and temperature.

A novel, to the best of our knowledge, optical fiber whispering-gallery mode (WGM) sensor for simultaneously measuring humidity and temperature is proposed and investigated. The proposed sensor is realized by a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-coated capillary tube coupling with an optical single-mode fiber (SMF), which is integrated with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The as-fabricated sensor can be used not only for relative humidity (RH) sensing but also for temperature detection.

ApoE Genotype, Age, and Cognitive Decline in Old Chinese Individuals Without Dementia: A Population-Based Study With Five-Year Follow-Up.

Background: Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε4 genotype is a well-known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its effect on predicting cognitive decline in individuals without dementia and its association with age are unclear.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between ApoE polymorphism and risk of cognitive decline and dementia incidence in the elderly without dementia.

CD38-mediated oxytocin signaling in paraventricular nucleus contributes to empathic pain.

Empathy plays a crucial role in social communication and the perception of affective states and behavioral processes. In this study, we observed that empathic interaction with a mouse experiencing pain resulted in decreased mechanical pain thresholds and anxiety-like behaviors in its bystander, though the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. We demonstrated that CD38 expression in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) was upregulated during empathic pain, and the pain and emotions of CD38 knockout (CD38KO) mice as bystanders were not affected.

Decreased risk of cardiovascular disease mortality associated with occasional positive screens following cancer screenings.

Positive results from cancer screenings, like a cancer diagnosis, can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality due to heightened psychological stress. However, positive screening results may also serve as a teachable moment to encourage the adoption of a healthier lifestyle. Consequently, the overall association between positive screenings and CVD mortality risk remains unclear.
