In many low- and middle-income countries, school children consume untreated water that has been pumped into storage tanks. The water is often of poor quality and consumption can cause gastrointestinal illnesses resulting in missed school days, growth stunting, and cognitive impairment. This study deployed a silver-ceramic technology (MadiDrop) to disinfect drinking water in school storage tanks.

Background: Lifestyle plays an important role in shaping the gut microbiome. However, its contributions to the oral microbiome remain less clear, due to the confounding effects of geography and methodology in investigations of populations studied to date. Furthermore, while the oral microbiome seems to differ between foraging and industrialized populations, we lack insight into whether transitions to and away from agrarian lifestyles shape the oral microbiota.

Present study aimed at a single component cyclization of 2-benzylidene-1-tetralones for the preparation of 5H-benzo[c]fluorenes and their antiproliferative activity. This ring closure reaction underwent via reductive cyclization in the presence of a sodium borohydride-aluminium chloride system. Ten diverse 5H-benzo[c]fluorene derivatives were prepared and evaluated for antiproliferative activity against three human cancer cell lines by SRB assay.

Article Synopsis
  • Nitroaromatic compounds are toxic pollutants released by industries into water, posing risks to ecosystems and human health.
  • Pd-doped ZnO nanoparticles were explored as an effective way to degrade these compounds due to their enhanced photocatalytic performance and stability.
  • The study found that these nanoparticles achieved significant nitrobenzene removal under visible light, with a notable increase in photocatalytic efficiency and the ability to be reused multiple times.
