To verify the influence of obstructive jaundice on pancreatic growth, the anteroposterior width of the pancreas was measured by computed tomography in 30 cholangiocarcinoma patients excluded patients with distal bile duct tumor (jaundice group) and 74 control subjects. Follow-up examinations were performed on 12 patients with and without internal biliary drainage to elucidate the temporal relationship between pancreatic enlargement and the diversion of the obstructed biliary stream. Histologic analysis on autopsy samples from 13 control and 10 jaundice cases also was performed.

The ability of SPECT to detect small differences in the level of uptake can be used to separate glands from background even when uptake is reduced as in the patients with Sjögren's syndrome. In control and probable Sjögren's syndrome groups the uptake ratio of the submandibular gland to parotid gland on salivary SPECT (S/P ratio) was less than 1.

It suggested that the effect of biliary obstruction and cholangitis on serum SPan-1 level was much more in biliary tract cancer than in pancreatic cancer.
