Rice stripe virus disease is one of the most devastating diseases of rice () in East Asia. The causal virus, Rice stripe virus (RSV), is persistently transmitted by the small brown planthopper (, SBPH). Since there is no effective treatment once rice plants are infected with RSV, it is crucial to prevent RSV infection in rice to minimize the damage.

Recently, metabolomics-based gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is becoming a common tool for analyzing, not only volatile compounds, but also non-volatile compounds due to the development of various derivatization methods. Although several studies have reviewed the application of metabolomics in food science, this present review article specifically focuses on metabolomics research using GC/MS for analysis of non-volatile compounds such as sugars, amino acids, and organic acids.

Here, we detected Potato Virus M (PVM), P (PVP), S (PVS), Y (PVY), and X (PVX) and Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV) by RT-PCR on potato leaves and tubers from the Northwestern (NW), Volga (VF), and Far Eastern (FE) federal districts of Russia. Each sample was co-infected with up to five viruses.
