Reflecting the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global response was reviewed by the Independent Review Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response. Based on the panel reports, the World Health Organization (WHO) member states decided to establish the intergovernmental negotiating body for drafting a WHO convention, agreement or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, aiming for approval at the 77 World Health Assembly in 2024 (May 27- June 1). Amidst this process, the National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Japan (NCGM), as a global health organization focusing on health system strengthening in low- and middle-income countries, from the perspective of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), provided technical inputs to the representatives of the Japanese government.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study compared juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) and adult-IIM by analyzing autoantibodies, clinical characteristics, and drug-free conditions in 320 patients over 20 years.
  • - Juvenile-IIM showed a higher rate of achieving drug-free conditions (34%) compared to adult-IIM (18%), with specific autoantibodies like anti-TIF1-γ linked to fewer muscle symptoms and lower malignancy rates in juveniles.
  • - Both groups had overlapping features with certain autoantibodies (like anti-MDA-5 and anti-ARS) associated with severe symptoms and a low likelihood of drug-free conditions, while treatment patterns differed notably between the two age groups.

Basidiomycetes with a wide variety of skeletons of secondary metabolites can be expected to be the source of new interesting biological compounds. During our research on basidiomycetes, two new C-29 oxygenated oleanane-type triterpenes (1 and 2) and torulosacid (3), a muurolene type sesquiterpenoid with a five-membered ether ring along with nine known compounds (4-12), were isolated from the MeOH extract of the fruiting bodies of Fuscoporia torulosa. The structures of 1-3 were determined by NMR and HREIMS analysis.

Vesiculobullous dermatomyositis (VD) is a rare manifestation of dermatomyositis (DM) and has been suggested to be associated with malignancy. Although the myositis-specific autoantibodies are associated with distinct clinical presentations of DM, those associated with VD remain unclear. Here, we present the case of a 54-year-old man with VD who tested positive for anti-nuclear matrix protein 2 (NXP-2) antibody, one of the DM-specific autoantibodies.
