Arthrodesis is a common procedure in the treatment of forefoot conditions affecting the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. Although this procedure has been shown to significantly improve individuals' activities of daily living and effectively relieve pain, there is a lack of research specifically investigating younger patients below 60 yrs of age wishing to return to sports. Our aim is to evaluate their ability to return to sports after 1st MTP joint arthrodesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) experience symptoms like cytopenias, fatigue, and bleeding, often exacerbated by therapeutics like Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKis).
  • A study analyzed hemostatic dysfunction in WM patients, comparing samples from untreated patients, those on BTKis, and healthy donors, using various blood tests to assess platelet function and clotting potential.
  • Results showed that WM patients had decreased platelet reticulation, slower thrombin generation, and impaired hemostatic function due to high levels of IgM, indicating serious disturbances in blood coagulation despite receiving treatment.

Introduction: Several risk factors found to be associated with postoperative complications and cancer surgery, which carry a significant morbidity risk to cancer patients. Therefore, prehabilitation is necessary to improve the functional capability and nutritional status of a patient prior to surgery, so that the patient can withstand any postoperative activity and associated deterioration. Thus, this study aims to assess the effectiveness of prehabilitation interventions on the functional status of patients with gastric and oesophageal cancer who underwent esophagectomy and gastrectomy.

Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of osteotomy preparation and implant placement for 3 pilot-guided (PG) concepts, namely, a surgical template with a metal sleeve (MS), a surgical template with an in-built nonmetal sleeve (NMS), and a surgical template with an in-built nonmetal sleeve for round bur indentation (RB).

Methods: Surgical models with missing maxillary molars were studied. The MS templates were designed to accept metal sleeves, while the NMS and RB templates were designed with in-built nonmetal sleeves.

Article Synopsis
  • About 0.1% to 0.3% of red blood cells (RBCs) in humans form complexes with platelets, which can increase in certain diseases, but their role in healthy blood is unclear.
  • Researchers found that older RBCs are more likely to form these platelet-RBC complexes, with a tenfold increase in aged cells compared to younger ones.
  • The study suggests that platelets help clear senescent RBCs from the bloodstream, and disturbances in platelet levels can lead to issues with RBC balance, potentially raising thrombosis risk in conditions like immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) or after spleen removal.
