In this work, a non-intrusive, spatially resolved, spectro-tomographic optical diagnostic of the electronic density and temperature on the linear plasma column Mistral is presented. Coupling of spectroscopy and tomography technique gives access to the local plasma light emission at different wavelengths (visible and near IR) in an argon plasma. Taking advantage of the symmetry of the Mistral experiment, the diagnostic results are validated and the plasma is found to correspond to a corona equilibrium state.

In this paper, we describe a newly installed tomography diagnostic on the linear magnetized plasma device Mistral. The diagnostic is composed of 128 lines of sight covering a 20 cm diameter section and an acquisition rate up to 1 MHz. The measurements are done in the visible spectrum using silicon photomultiplier arrays that require a lower amplification voltage than photomultiplier tubes for similar gains and have a fast response.

Edge intrinsic rotation was investigated in Ohmic L-mode discharges on the Tokamak à Configuration Variable, scanning the major radial position of the X point, R(X). Edge rotation decreased linearly with increasing R(X), vanishing or becoming countercurrent for an outboard X point, in agreement with theoretical expectations. The core rotation profile shifted fairly rigidly with the edge rotation, changing the central rotation speed by more than a factor of two.

The first experimental evidence of parallel momentum transport generated by the up-down asymmetry of a toroidal plasma is reported. The experiments, conducted in the Tokamak à Configuration Variable, were motivated by the recent theoretical discovery of ion-scale turbulent momentum transport induced by an up-down asymmetry in the magnetic equilibrium. The toroidal rotation gradient is observed to depend on the asymmetry in the outer part of the plasma leading to a variation of the central rotation by a factor of 1.

The symmetry of a physical system strongly impacts on its properties. In toroidal plasmas, the symmetry along a magnetic field line usually constrains the radial flux of parallel momentum to zero in the absence of background flows. By breaking the up-down symmetry of the toroidal currents, this constraint can be relaxed.
