Introduction: Both appraisal emotion approaches and self-regulation theory emphasize that appraising an event as conducive or detrimental to one's current goals may trigger an affective response that can be observed nonverbally. Because there may be a female advantage in the inhibition and self-regulation of emotions, we hypothesized that female but not male athletes regulate emotions during sports through explicit nonverbal behaviors.

Methods: All nonverbal hand movement behavior of right-handed female and male tennis athletes was recorded during competitive matches.

Psychometric Properties of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale Among Rural-Dwelling U.S. Women.

To decrease the high rates of mental health-related maternal morbidity and mortality among rural-dwelling women, it is critical to identify those experiencing postpartum depression (PPD) and provide necessary follow-up care. To effectively screen for PPD, clinicians must utilize instruments which account for context-specific factors and maintain validity across diverse populations. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is the most commonly used depression screening tool in perinatal settings, but has not been validated for use within rural American settings.

Association between Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion polymorphism and hypertension in a Ghanaian population.

Background: Genetic modifications in the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS) have been suggested to play a key role in the pathophysiology of hypertension. The insertion/deletion polymorphism of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene phenomenon and its relationship with essential hypertension has not been explored within the Ghanaian population. This study aims to determine the relationship between the ACE I/D polymorphism and the risk of essential hypertension among patients seeking medical attention.

Trace metal load of two urban wetlands with varied catchment activities in Ghana.

This study compared Lead (Pb), Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Mercury (Hg), Arsenic (As) and Cadmium (Cd) concentrations in sediment, water, and biota at Vaughan Dam which receives limited sewage effluent discharge from residential areas, and Korle Lagoon which receives industrial effluents, electronic waste, garages-spill oil and a host of others in addition to residential sewage effluent discharge. Samples were analyzed with Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. The results showed that concentrations of trace metals were generally higher in the sediment, water, and plants from the Korle Lagoon but only Cu in the sediment of Korle Lagoon showed a significantly high concentration.

Improving the Quality of Postpartum Care in Ghana: Protocol for a Parallel Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Although the postpartum period poses substantial risks and can result in significant maternal morbidity and mortality, postpartum care of the mother receives much less attention in transitional countries.

Objective: We describe the protocol for a randomized controlled trial to implement and evaluate a postpartum care delivery model titled Focused-PPC (Focused Postpartum Care).

Methods: Focused-PPC is an integrated group postpartum care model that meets the clinical care, education, and support needs of mothers up to 1 year after birth.
