Relationship between preterm labor and thrombophilic gene polymorphism: A prospective sequential cohort study.

Objective: Premature labor is still the leading cause of infant mortality and morbidity worldwide. Multiple etiological factors including genetics and environment are held responsible for preterm birth. However, scientific data regarding the link between premature birth and genetics are limited.

Assessment of the predictivity of preoperative serum CA 125 in the differential diagnosis of uterine leiomyoma and uterine sarcoma in the Turkish female population.

Aims: Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumors of the uterus. Unfortunately, the diagnostic imaging criteria for distinguishing leiomyosarcomas from leiomyomas remain vague. Our aim was to study the preoperative diagnostic value of CA 125 in the differential diagnosis of leiomyoma and uterine sarcoma.

Implant supported prosthesis in a patient with progeria: case report.

Aim: The objectives of this study are to compare the risk of psychological depression after medical and surgical abortions in first two trimesters and to evaluate the risk factors for post-abortion depression.

Method: A retrospective study was conducted throughout 367 women who underwent surgical abortion and 458 women who underwent medical abortion between January 2006 and January 2007 in Dr. Zekai Tahir Burak Women's Health Hospital.

Necessity of preventive colostomy for Fournier's gangrene of the anorectal region.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the necessity of preventive colostomy for Fournier's gangrene of the anorectal region.

Methods: The medical records of 37 patients with perianal Fournier's gangrene were evaluated retrospectively. Debridement(s) alone was performed in 18 patients (Group D), while debridement(s) plus Hartmann colostomy was performed in 19 patients (Group D&HC).

Nephrotic-range proteinuria with small glomerular fibrillary deposits in a patient on diphenylhydantoin treatment.

Background: Although the exact role of the diphenylhydantoin treatment on the immune system is still unclear, prolonged administration of diphenylhydantoin has been suggested to be associated with immune-based disorders and syndromes.

Case Report: A case of fibrillary glomerulonephritis associated with DPH treatment is reported. This is the first reported case of fibrillary glomerulonephritis associated with this commonly used common anticonvulsive drug.

Effect of non-oral estrogen on risk markers for metabolic syndrome in early surgically menopausal women.

Objective: Postmenopausal women are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome as many risk factors are aggravated by menopause. Elevated levels of homocysteine, triglyceride and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) have been recognized as risk factors for metabolic syndrome. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of transdermal estrogen treatment on serum levels of atherogenic amino acids, homocysteine, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and ADMA in women with surgical menopause.

Evaluation of lymphocyte subgroups in children with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

The aetiology of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) remains to be fully elucidated, although it follows infection with a hypermutant defective M-protein measles virus. This study analysed peripheral blood lymphocyte subgroups to determine their role in the pathophysiology of SSPE. It included 22 children with SSPE aged 2 - 15 years (patient group) and 22 age- and gender-matched healthy children (control group).

The protective effect of erdosteine on vancomycin-induced pancreatic damage in rats.

Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate whether vancomycin (VCM) has a negative effect on pancreatic tissue and to elucidate the role of erdosteine (ERD), an expectorant and an antioxidant agent, on possible VCM-induced pancreas impairment in rats.

Materials And Methods: A total of 21 male Wistar albino rats were included in this study. All animals were equally divided into three groups as follows: Controls (n = 7), VCM treated group (200 mg/kg twice daily for 7 days intraperitoneally, n = 7) and VCM (200 mg/kg) + ERD treated group (10 mg/kg day orally ERD, n = 7).

Objective: Obesity is an important factor that might reduce fecundity. In order to determine the underlying physiological mechanisms and risk factors, the obesity-fecundity association is investigated in relation to parity, menstrual cycle regularity, smoking habits, and age.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of 22,840 women who gave birth between January 2006 and January 2007 in the Dr Zekai Tahir Burak Women's Health Research and Education Hospital.

Characterization of two unusual features of resistance to soilborne cereal mosaic virus in hexaploid wheat: leakiness and gradual elimination of viral coat protein from infected root tissues.

Spatiotemporal infection patterns of Soilborne cereal mosaic virus (SBCMV) were compared between resistant and susceptible wheat cultivars to elucidate disease resistance mechanisms. Resistance to SBCMV was manifested by a gradual disappearance of the viral coat protein (CP) from the roots following an initial short period of steady accumulation. Interestingly, viral RNA persisted in the roots of resistant cultivars even after the CP had disappeared.

The effects on diet, anastomotic type, and loxiglumide on gastric emptying following gastrojejunostomy.

Purpose: The effects on gastric emptying of feeding with a normal diet (ND), an early high-calorie and hyperosmolar diet (HCHOD) or normal diet plus intraperitoneal loxiglumide (LOX) were investigated in rats with antecolic (ACGJ) or retrocolic (RCGJ) gastrojejunostomy.

Methods: Sixty rats were separated into six groups of ten animals each (ACGJ+ND, RCGJ+ND, ACGJ+HCHOD, RCGJ+HCHOD, ACGJ+ND+LOX, and RCGJ+ND+LOX). On the seventh day, scintigraphic measurements of solid gastric emptying were made at 1, 30 and 60 min.

The etiology of fibromyalgia is not clearly understood. In recent years, a few studies have investigated the possible role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the etiology and pathogenesis of fibromyalgia. The aim of this study was to investigate plasma antioxidant vitamins, lipid peroxidation (LP), and nitric oxide (NO) levels in patients with fibromyalgia and controls.

Comparison of bony healing and cartilage degeneration following strut grafting and trapdoor procedures in an ovine model.

This experimental study compared bony healing and cartilage degeneration following strut grafting and trapdoor procedures for osteonecrosis of the femoral head in an ovine model. Osteonecrosis and a bony defect were created surgically in 16 hips of 8 Merino sheep, and the index grafting procedures were performed in a second session. Three months after surgery, the hips treated by strut grafting yielded better articular cartilage protection and bony healing compared to the osteonecrosis groups.

Erdosteine modulates radiocontrast-induced hepatotoxicity in rat.

It has been suggested that reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in radio contrast media (RCM)-induced ischemia reperfusion tissue injury although antioxidants may have protective effects on the injury. We investigated the effects of erdosteine as an antioxidant agent on RCM-induced liver toxicity in rats by evaluation of lipid peroxidation (as TBARS), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) values and histological evaluation. Twenty-one rats were equally divided into three groups as follows: control, RCM, and RCM plus erdosteine.

Extrafollicular adenomatoid odontogenic tumor of the mandible: report of a case.

The purpose of this study was to report an extrafollicular adenomatoid odontogenic tumor in the mandibular anterior region in a patient. A 15 year-old female with a painless swelling in the mandibular anterior region was referred to our clinic. Fine needle aspiration yielded no fluid.

Efficacy of oral ribavirin treatment in Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever: a quasi-experimental study from Turkey.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of oral ribavirin treatment in patients with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF).

Methods: In 2004, all patients diagnosed with CCHF were treated with oral ribavirin, however in 2003 none of the CCHF patients had been given treatment due to lack of confirmatory diagnostic information at that time in Turkey. In this study, patients treated with ribavirin in 2004 (n=126) were compared with ribavirin-untreated CCHF patients (n=92) in 2003.

Internet-based monitoring and prediction system of coal stockpile behaviors under atmospheric conditions.

Spontaneous combustion on industrial-scale stockpiles causes environmental problems and economic losses for the companies consuming large amounts of coal. In this study, an effective monitoring and prediction system based on internet was developed and implemented to prevent losses and environmental problems. The system was performed in a coal stockpile with 5 m width, 10 m length, 3 m height, and having 120 t of weight.

Protective and therapeutic effects of swimming exercise training on diabetic peripheral neuropathy of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

Background: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a typical complication of diabetes. No definitive treatment and prevention of DPN has been established, and very few data on the role of exercise training on DPN have been reported.

Aim Of The Study: The protective and therapeutic effects of aerobic physical activity on the development of DPN in Type 1 were investigated.

[Helminth fauna of Hemidactylus turcicus (Linnaeus,1758) (Turkish gecko) collected from Hatay].

Twenty two Hemidactylus turcicus (Turkish Gecko) collected from Hatay were examined for helminths between 2000-2008 years. As a result of this study, 2 helminth species (Spauligodon laevicauda and Macracanthorynchus catulinus) were found. This is the first time that these helminth species have been found in Turkey.

Endothelin receptor antagonism by tezosentan attenuates lung injury induced by aortic ischemia-reperfusion.

Tezosentan is a novel dual endothelin receptor antagonist. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of tezosentan on lung injury induced by abdominal aortic ischemia-reperfusion (IR) in rats. Thirty-two Wistar-albino rats were randomized into four groups (eight per group) as follows: control group (sham laparotomy), aortic IR group (120 min ischemia and 120 min reperfusion), aortic IR + tezosentan group (a bolus intravenous injection of 10 mg/kg tezosentan before ischemia plus continuous intravenous infusion of 1 mg/kg/hr tezosentan during 120 min ischemia and 120 min reperfusion), and control + tezosentan.
