Background: Pregnant women with asthma are recommended to maintain optimal therapeutic management during pregnancy. Uncontrolled, symptomatic asthma may increase the risk of adverse peri-natal outcomes; thus adequate regular anti-asthmatic treatment must be given to provide optimal asthma control during pregnancy. However, doubts about the safety of asthmatic drugs can affect pregnant asthmatic patients' drug compliance.

This paper examines the reports on the selection criteria and the post-operative performance of 25 children implanted with the Neurelec Digisonic SP. This study reported benefits from Neurelec Digisonic SP cochlear implant in auditory and speech perception outcomes. There has been a lack of studies into the additional factors such as level of the mothers' education and bilingualism, which is a factor that may have a significant effect on the success of cochlear implantation.

Background: Studies about the pathogenesis of bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR) in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) and its relationship with lower airway remodeling are extremely limited. In this study, bronchial vascular remodeling and its relationship with BHR were evaluated by measurement of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and endostatin in patients with seasonal AR (SAR).

Methods: The study group consisted of 30 patients with SAR (positive skin test to grass pollens) and 14 healthy controls.

Penile ossification is very rare, with only a handful of histologically confirmed reported cases. The most common condition leading to penile ossification is Peyronie's disease. Other conditions, such as gout, end-stage renal disease, diabetes mellitus, hyperparathyroidism and local trauma, have also been associated with penile ossification.

A 66-year-old man presented with impaired balance, tinnitus, sensation of blockage, and hearing loss in his left ear, which developed after dental treatment for dental pain 4 days previously. Treatment of the carious left upper second molar tooth had included pulp extirpation, canal expansion, and tooth filling under local anesthesia with articaine and epinephrine. Impaired balance decreased spontaneously within 3 days of dental treatment, but tinnitus and hearing loss persisted.

A cholesterol granuloma of the petrous bone is an expanding mass which contains fluids, lipids, chronic inflammatory cells, and cholesterol crystals surrounded by a fibrous lining. The goal of surgery is to provide drainage and ventilation of the affected area to prevent recurrences. In this article, we report a case of a 27-year-old man who was operated using the transmastoid infralabyrinthine approach to drain a cholesterol granuloma cyst.

Unlabelled: Tonsillectomy is associated with severe postoperative pain for which, several drugs are employed for management.

Objective: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous paracetamol and dipyrone when used for post-tonsillectomy analgesia in children.

Method: 120 children aged 3-6 yr, undergoing tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy and/or ventilation tube insertion were randomized to receive intraoperative infusions of paracetamol (15 mg/kg), dipyrone (15 mg/kg) or placebo (0.

Situs inversus totalis is a rare condition, which presents difficulties in diagnosis and treatment of gallstones due to the reversal location of abdominal organs. In this article we present 2 cases of women in age of 51 and 55 years with situs inversus totalis and gallstones. There are described the clinical and imaging features, also the laparoscopic surgery with the difficulties encountered by right handed surgeon.

We evaluated ossicular chain reconstruction in patients with idiopathic incus necrosis who have conductive hearing loss and an intact ear drum. The study included four patients (3 women and 1 man; the ages of the patients were 22, 31, 35, and 56 years, respectively) with unilateral conductive hearing loss, no history of chronic serous otitis media, an intact ear drum, normal middle ear mucosa, and necrosis of the long processes of the incus. On preoperative pure tone audiometry, air-bone gaps were 24, 25, 38, and 33 dB.

Anaphylaxis have been documented as adverse effects of ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, levofloxacin, and moxifloxacin. However resistant and biphasic anaphlylactic reactions to gemifloxacin have not been reported to date. Management of severe anaphylaxis in the elderly can be complicated by concurrent medications such as beta (β) adrenergic, alpha (α) adrenergic blockers and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

Introduction: The purpose of the present study seeks to determine the signal timing of BMP-7 and TGF-β1 from a novel chitosan based hydrogel system that may affect chondrocyte proliferation resulting in the presence of a synergism seen conspicuously in consecutive controlled delivery.

Methods: Four groups of cultured chondrocytes were seeded on a novel designed chitosan based hydrogel. The hydrogel was left empty (control) in one group and loaded with BMP-7, TGF-β1 and their combination in the other groups, respectively.

We present a rare case of self-inflicted penetrating head trauma by a 34-year-old male who hammered four nails into his own head; he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia seven years before. On the physical examination, four nails were observed in the hairy scalp that had been driven into the cranium in the right temporal and parietal areas of the head. No cerebrospinal fluid fistulas were present.

The title molecule, (E)-3-chloro-N-((5-nitrothiophen-2-yl)methylene)aniline, (C(11)H(7)ClN(2)O(2)S), was synthesized and characterized by IR and single-crystal X-ray structure determination. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. In addition, the molecular geometry, vibrational frequencies and frontier molecular orbitals analysis of the title compound in the ground state have been calculated by using the PM3 semi-empirical, HF/6-31G(d) and B3LYP/6-31G(d) ab initio methods.

Considering the popularity of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in allergic patients, physicians involved in allergic patients' care need to be aware of CAM. To assess self-reported knowledge, attitude and approach to CAM of physicians who deal with allergic patients, a total of 500 structured questionnaires were distributed to physicians who participated in "Turkish National Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Congress-2009". For the questionnaires handed out, 242 (48.

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is an extremely rare congenital anomaly, characterized with optic nerve hypoplasia and absence of septum pellucidum and/or pituitary dysfunction. In addition to classical findings of SOD, we report for the first time an 11-year-old boy, with encephalocele extending to the right sphenoidal sinus, right anophthalmia and normal pituitary functions. Despite all the major anomalies, the patient's presenting symptoms were very few and during the 11-year period the SDO had caused no complaints in our case.

Doppler-guided hemorrhoidal artery ligation (DGHAL) is a nonexcisional surgical technique for the treatment of hemorrhoidal disease, consisting of the ligation of the distal branches of the superior rectal artery, resulting in a reduction of blood flow and decongestion of hemorrhoidal plexus resulting in fibrosis. The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy and safety of DGHAL, define its indications, and identify its possible advantages and limitations for the treatment of second- and third-degree hemorrhoids. The procedure was performed using a specially designed proctoscope.

Polymers containing maleimide groups on their side chains have been synthesized by utilization of a novel styrenic monomer containing a masked-maleimide unit. AIBN initiated free radical polymerization and reverse addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization was utilized for synthesis of copolymers containing masked maleimide groups as side chains. The maleimide groups were unmasked via the retro Diels-Alder reaction.
