Impacts of microplastic accumulation in aquatic environment: Physiological, eco-toxicological, immunological, and neurotoxic effects.

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystem has become a pressing global concern. MPs pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, with devastating consequences for both aquatic life and human health. Notably, freshwater ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to MPs pollution.

Basic Science and Pathogenesis.

Background: APOEε4 significantly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cognitively healthy APOEε4-carriers exist, suggesting potential protective mechanisms against APOEε4. We hypothesized that some APOEε4-carriers may have genetic variations protecting them from developing APOEε4-mediated AD pathology.

Basic Science and Pathogenesis.

Background: Genetic variations have emerged as crucial players in the etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and they serve for a better understanding of the disease mechanisms; yet the specific roles of these genetic variants remain uncertain. Animal models with reminiscent disease pathology could uncover previously uncharacterized roles of these genes. Therefore, we generated zebrafish models for AD variants to analyze the in depth molecular and biological functions of these variants.

Effect of ultrasound-assisted extraction on phenolic profile, bio-accessibility, OVCAR-3, and SKOV-3 cytotoxicity in blackthorn (Prunus spinosa L.).

This study aimed to examine the extraction of specific phenolic compounds from blackthorn using ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and to evaluate the influence of UAE on the phenolic composition, bioaccessibility, and cytotoxic effect evaluated on ovarian cancer (OVCAR-3 and SKOV-3) and healthy (HaCaT) cell lines. The UAE parameters were optimized by modeling with the response surface method. Temperature, time, and ultrasound amplitude were utilized to determine the optimal extraction conditions.

Effects of 1-methylcyclopropene, methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid on physicochemical properties and wooliness of nectarine fruit during cold storage.

Background: Owing to its high perishability, the market life of nectarine fruit is very short. Cold storage is a principal approach to limit post-harvest quality loss in nectarines. The objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of postharvest methyl jasmonate (MeJA), salicylic acid (SA) and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on quality properties of nectarine fruit, specifically weight loss, firmness, phenolics and antioxidant activity, following cold storage and subsequent shelf life.

Risk factors for neurologic sequelae in children and adolescents with hemophilia after intracranial hemorrhage.

Background: Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is reportedly rare but has high morbidity and mortality risk in persons with hemophilia. Although the risk factors that facilitate bleeding are known, the factors affecting the sequelae are not well known.

Objectives: We planned to investigate the risk factors for neurologic sequelae in children and adolescents with hemophilia suffering from ICH.

Predicting Severe Respiratory Failure in Patients with COVID-19: A Machine Learning Approach.

Studies attempting to predict the development of severe respiratory failure in patients with a COVID-19 infection using machine learning algorithms have yielded different results due to differences in variable selection. We aimed to predict the development of severe respiratory failure, defined as the need for high-flow oxygen support, continuous positive airway pressure, or mechanical ventilation, in patients with COVID-19, using machine learning algorithms to identify the most important variables in achieving this prediction. This retrospective, cross-sectional study included COVID-19 patients with mild respiratory failure (mostly receiving oxygen through a mask or nasal cannula).

Medical device-related pressure injuries: The mediating role of attitude in the relationship between ICU nurses' knowledge levels and self-efficacy.

Aim: This study examines the mediating role of attitude towards preventing pressure injuries (PIs) in the effect of knowledge about Medical Device-Related Pressure Injuries (MDRPI) on self-efficacy in PI management among Turkish intensive care unit (ICU) nurses.

Materials And Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 302 ICU nurses in Turkey from October 15, 2023, to April 30, 2024. Data were collected using the Nurse Information Form, Medical Device Related Pressure Injury Knowledge Assessment Test (MDRPI-KAT), Attitude towards Pressure Ulcer Prevention Instrument (APuP), and the Pressure Ulcer Management Self-Efficiency Scale (PUMSES).

Gold nanoparticles decorated FOLFIRINOX loaded liposomes for synergistic therapy of pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is predicted to be the second highest cause of cancer deaths by 2030, with a mortality rate of 98 % and a 5-year survival rate of only 4-8 %. FOLFIRINOX which consists of four main ingredients has shown superior efficacy in treating patients with pancreatic cancer compared to other agents and combinations. However, toxicities have prevented full-dose use of FOLFIRINOX.

This is the first study reporting a nationwide data pool of 2 million children. We aimed to investigate the epidemiology of pediatric fractures by sex, age, geographical region, and socioeconomic status (SES).

Exploring Inhibition Mechanisms in Wildtype and T315I BCR-ABL1: An In Silico Approach Integrating Virtual Screening, MD Simulations, and MM-GBSA Analysis.

The BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase which is responsible for the pathogenesis of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), has emerged as a promising therapeutic target. To address this issue, we employed a comprehensive computational approach integrating virtual screening, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and MM-GBSA (Molecular Mechanics/Generalized Born Surface Area) analysis to identify potential inhibitors and elucidate their binding mechanisms. Initially, virtual screening was conducted on 994 compounds from the ZINC database and, these compounds were docked against wildtype and T315I mutant ABL1 for the Type I and Type II ABL1 kinase inhibition mechanisms.

The Effect of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback on Recovery After Aerobic Exercise.

Recovery is a critical factor in athletic performance, and accelerating this process is essential to enable athletes to perform more effectively in both training load and competitive performance. After exercise, immediate recovery is potentially helpful for investigating autonomic activity levels, as they are definable with heart rate variability (HRV). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of ten sessions of HRV-Biofeedback (HRV-BF) training on recovery process parameters after the aerobic performance.

The Role of Glycocalyx Diversity and Thickness for Nanoparticle Internalization in M1-/M2-like Macrophages.

Very small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (VSOPs) show diagnostic value in multiple diseases as a promising MRI contrast agent. Macrophages predominantly ingest VSOPs, but the mechanism remains unclear. This study identifies differences in VSOP uptake between pro-inflammatory M1 and anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages and explores the role of the pericellular glycocalyx.

Junctional Ectopic Tachycardia After Congenital Heart Surgery: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes.

Objective: Postoperative junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET) is usually a self-limiting condition; however, when combined with atrioventricular dissociation and postoperative ventricular dysfunction, it may increase morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to determine the overall incidence of JET following congenital heart surgery, to identify patient and procedure-related risk factors, and to evaluate the clinical impact of JET on outcomes.

Methods: The records of 2,814 patients who underwent cardiac surgery over a five-year period were reviewed retrospectively to identify those with JET.

Superiority of 68Ga-Trivehexin PET/CT Over 18F-FDG PET/CT in the Evaluation of Lymph Nodes in Patients With Breast Cancer.

A patient with left upper quadrant breast cancer who had 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging underwent 68Ga-Trivehexin PET/CT. 68Ga-Trivehexin PET/CT showed higher radiotracer accumulation in the primary tumor, left internal mammary lymph nodes, and axillary lymph nodes compared with 18F-FDG PET/CT. However, Trivehexin uptake was not observed in FDG-positive lymph nodes in the mediastinum and left hilar region.

Multimodal approach to optimize biopsy decision-making for PI-RADS 3 lesions on multiparametric MRI.
