Background: Carbon-monoxide (CO) poisoning is a substantial cause of preventable mortality. In Turkey, no nationwide data are being collected nowadays. In our study, we aimed to assess the trend in deaths related to CO exposure in all provinces of Turkey in a 10-year period by using the records of a news agency which collects the news from the majority of the national newspapers, local newspapers and television channels.

Chronic subdural hematoma is a frequent type of hemorrhage, which terminates with mortality if not diagnosed and treated early. The aim of this clinical study is to evaluate the patients with unilateral and bilateral recurrent chronic subdural hematoma. The study group consisted of 13 cases with unilateral and bilateral recurrent chronic subdural hematomas who underwent aggressive wide craniotomy, duraectomy, inner and outer membranectomy, dural border coagulation, incision through cortical vein trace and hang up of dural edge, between 2009 - 2016.

The composite tumors of the liver are very rare, including the coexistence of HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma) with NEC (neuroendocrine carcinoma). The rare occurrence of these tumors necessitates more reported cases in order to fully understand their clinical characteristics, behaviors and treatments. Herein is described an incidental collision tumor of HCC-NEC, along with a review of the literature focusing on their clinicopathological findings and prognosis.

Acquired coagulopathy is a rare but challenging diagnosis for pediatric emergency physicians. Although the coagulopathy usually presents with mild skin and mucosal hemorrhages, it also can lead to life-threatening events. Thus, accurate interpretation of hints obtained from a detailed history, physical examination, and laboratory findings is essential for the prompt diagnosis and management.

Aim: To determine the microbiological etiology in critically ill neurosurgical patients with nosocomial meningitis (NM) and to show the impact of Gram-negative rods and the differences between patient characteristics and the clinical and prognostic measures in Gram-negative and Gram-positive meningitis.

Material And Methods: In this prospective, single-center study, we reviewed all adult patients hospitalized during a 12-year period and identified pathogens isolated from post-neurosurgical cases of NM. Demographic, clinical, and treatment characteristics were noted from the medical records.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate and compare the differentiation, proliferation, migration and inflammatory behavior of dental pulp- and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (DP-MSCs and BM-MSCs) in response to a Hypericum perforatum ethanol extract. Using xCELLigence, a real-time monitoring system, a dose of 10 µg/mL was found to be the most efficient concentration for vitality. The IC50 values and doubling time were calculated.

Background And Objective: Elevated levels of matrix metalloproteinase-7 (MMP7) have been observed in serum samples of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and in gingival tissues of subjects with periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to collect in vivo and in silico evidence on the role of MMP7 in the interplay between T2DM and generalized periodontitis (GP).

Material And Methods: The extent of MMP7 expression and localization were immunohistochemically analyzed in gingival tissues of patients with GP with T2DM (T2DM/GP, n = 11), systemically healthy patients with GP (n = 7), and systemically and periodontally healthy controls (n = 11).

Developing strategies for atomic-scale controlled synthesis of new two-dimensional (2D) functional materials will directly impact their applications. Here, using in situ aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we obtain direct insight into the homoepitaxial Frank-van der Merwe atomic layer growth mechanism of TiC single adlayers synthesized on surfaces of TiC MXene substrates with the substrate being the source material. Activated by thermal exposure and electron-beam irradiation, hexagonal TiC single adlayers form on defunctionalized surfaces of TiC MXene at temperatures above 500 °C, generating new 2D materials TiC and TiC.

We propose and demonstrate reduced symmetry photonic surfaces providing highly controlled Bloch wave propagation. The backward and dual directional propagations have been observed in the proposed low-symmetric periodic structures without variation in the unit-cell filling factor. Frequency-domain analyses present group indices up to negative/positive -237/+96 as strong indicators of the observed directional controlled surface waves driven by the orientation angle in the range of 20°-90°.

Background: In heart failure (HF) patients, left ventricular mechanical dispersion (LVMD) reflects heterogeneous mechanical activation of the left ventricle. In HF patients, LVMD can be reduced after CRT. Whether lesser LVMD is associated with improved outcome is unknown.

Background: Previous studies report conflicting results about a higher incidence of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with a chronic total coronary occlusion (CTO). We aimed to investigate this association in a large cohort of implantable cardioverter defibrillator patients with long-term follow-up.

Methods And Results: All consecutive patients from 1992 onwards who underwent implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation for ischemic cardiomyopathy at the Leiden University Medical Center were evaluated.

Objectives: Human β-defensin (hBD)-1 is an important gatekeeper of the gingiva against constant bacterial challenge, and glucose levels are involved in its optimal expression. The aims of the study were to investigate hBD-1 levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and to compare these levels between type 2 diabetics with or without periodontitis and healthy individuals.

Materials And Methods: Altogether, 81 subjects were included in the study: 21 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) suffering from generalized periodontitis (T2DM + GP), 18 systemically healthy generalized periodontitis patients (GP), 18 periodontally healthy T2DM subjects (T2DM + H), and 24 systemically and periodontally healthy subjects (control).

Objective: To determine the values of microvolt T-wave alternans (MTWA) in children and adolescents with Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) and controls.

Methods: Thirteen were included in the study. After analyzing the 24-h ECG recordings, MTWA was considered using three leads (V5, V1, and aVF).

Background: Myocardial fibrosis (macroscopic scar or diffuse reactive fibrosis) is one of the determinants of impaired left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) in heart failure (HF) patients.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of LV GLS in HF patients treated with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).

Methods: The study included 829 HF patients (mean age 64.

Objective: Acute traumatic coagulopathy occurs after trauma with impairment of hemostasis and activation of fibrinolysis. Some endogenous substances may play roles in this failure of the coagulation system. Extracellular histone is one such molecule that has recently attracted attention.

Aim: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is a new treatment option for pediatric respiratory distress and we aimed to assess early predictive factors of unresponsiveness to HFNC therapy in a pediatric emergency department (ED).

Method: Patients who presented with respiratory distress and were treated by HFNC, were included. The age, gender, weight, medical history, diagnosis, vital signs, oxygen saturation/fraction of inspired oxygen (SpO /FiO ) ratio, modified Respiratory Distress Assessment Instrument (mRDAI) scores, medical interventions, duration of HFNC therapy, time to escalation, adverse effects, and laboratory test results were obtained from medical and nursing records.
