Atypical MRI findings of synchronous cerebral metastasis. A case report and literature review.

Intracranial metastases represent 7% to 17% of all brain tumors. Metastases may appear before, after or synchronously with the primary tumor. Synchronous tumor presentation means that that metastasis is found within two months of primary tumor diagnosis.

High-capacity methane storage in metal-organic frameworks M2(dhtp): the important role of open metal sites.

We found that metal-organic framework (MOF) compounds M(2)(dhtp) (open metal M = Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn; dhtp = 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate) possess exceptionally large densities of open metal sites. By adsorbing one CH(4) molecule per open metal, these sites alone can generate very large methane storage capacities, 160-174 cm(3)(STP)/cm(3), approaching the DOE target of 180 cm(3)(STP)/cm(3) for material-based methane storage at room temperature. Our adsorption isotherm measurements at 298 K and 35 bar for the five M(2)(dhtp) compounds yield excess methane adsorption capacities ranging from 149 to 190 cm(3)(STP)/cm(3) (derived using their crystal densities), indeed roughly equal to the predicted, maximal adsorption capacities of the open metals (within +/-10%) in these MOFs.

Strong coupling of the Fe-spin state and the As-As hybridization in iron-pnictide superconductors from first-principle calculations.

From first-principles calculations, we unravel surprisingly strong interactions between arsenic ions in iron pnictides, the strength of which is controlled by the Fe-spin state. Reducing the Fe-magnetic moment weakens the Fe-As bonding, and in turn, increases As-As interactions, causing giant reduction in the c axis. For the CaFe2As2 system, this reduction is as large as 1.

Effect of passive ultrasonic irrigation on apical extrusion of irrigating solution.

Nonsurgical endodontic treatment of Type III dens invaginatus in maxillary canine: an 18-month follow-up.

Dens invaginatus (DI) is a developmental variation resulting from an infolding of the outer enamel surface of a tooth into the interior. The greatest difficulty in the endodontic treatment of DI is in locating the rudimentary root canal, because of the atypical internal morphologic complexity. Invagination may also restrict sufficient cleaning and shaping.

Use of mineral trioxide aggregate in the treatment of horizontal root fractures with a 5-year follow-up: report of a case.

Root fractures are those that involve dentin, cementum, and the pulp. They occur more frequently in children than adults. This case report describes the treatment and 5-year follow-up of two maxillary central incisors with horizontal root fractures using mineral trioxide aggregate and the application of intracoronal bleaching of the discolored tooth.

[Disclosure of the diagnosis to the patient with head and neck cancer].

Objectives: The goal of this study was to elicit information on the feelings and thoughts of head and neck cancer patients at the time of disclosure of the diagnosis and to guide the physicians to a better communication with similar patients, taking into consideration general tendencies and the opinion of individual patients.

Patients And Methods: A questionnaire-based, retrospective study was performed between April 2005 and 2006, including 34 patients (26 males 8 females; mean age 52 years; range 19 to 80 years) with head and neck cancer, who had undergone surgery as primary treatment, had been followed-up for at least two years, and were disease-free at the time of the study. A 30-item questionnaire was administered, consisting of multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions.

Metastatic pulmonary calcification in a patient with chronic renal failure.

Metastatic pulmonary calcification characterized by diffuse calcium deposition in the lungs is known to occur in patients with chronic renal failure. We present a case of a 47-year-old man with chronic renal failure presented with dyspnea, high-resolution computed tomography of the chest revealed multiple, centrilobular, calcified nodules and patchy areas of ground-glass opacity throughout both lungs, consistent with metastatic pulmonary calcification. Calcification was also seen in the bronchi and trachea.

Spinal MRI findings of guillain-barré syndrome.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a relatively common, acute, and rapidly progressive, inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. The diagnosis is usually established on the basis of symptoms and signs, aided by cerebrospinal fluid findings and electrophysiologic criteria. Previously, radiologic examinations have been used only to rule out other spinal abnormalities.

Prediction of force measurements of a microbend sensor based on an artificial neural network.

Artificial neural network (ANN) based prediction of the response of a microbend fiber optic sensor is presented. To the best of our knowledge no similar work has been previously reported in the literature. Parallel corrugated plates with three deformation cycles, 6 mm thickness of the spacer material and 16 mm mechanical periodicity between deformations were used in the microbend sensor.

Crystal structure and antiferromagnetic order in NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0 and 0.2) superconducting compounds from neutron diffraction measurements.

The transition temperature T{C} approximately 26 K of the recently discovered superconductor LaFeAsO1-xFx is extremely sensitive to the lanthanide ion, reaching 55 K for the Sm containing oxypnictides. Therefore, it is important to determine how the moment on the lanthanide affects the overall magnetism in these systems. Here we report a neutron diffraction study of the Nd oxypnictides.

Review of a series with abducens nerve palsy.

Objective: In this report, we aimed to investigate the patients that presented at our clinic complaint with diplopia due to the abducens nerve palsy and neurosurgical disease.

Methods: The study design was a retrospective review of ten cases with the abducens nerve palsy. The causes of the abducens nerve paralysis of our patients were as follows: two cases with head trauma, three cases with pituitary tumors, one case with sphenoid sinus mucocele, one case with greater superficial petrosal nerve cellular schwannoma at the petrous apex, one case with hypertensive intraventricular hemmorhage, one case with hydrocephalus, and one case with parotid tumor and skull base/brain stem invasion.

Comparison of nasal region dimensions in bilateral choanal atresia patients and normal controls: a computed tomographic analysis with clinical implications.

Objective: To determine if any difference exists between a set of nasal dimension measurements in choanal atresia patients and in a control group.

Methods: A retrospective study was undertaken to define the variation of values for a series of nasal dimension measurements through axial computed tomography in 9 patients with bilateral choanal atresia and compare the same dimensions with a control group 104 patients of similar gender and age distribution. The statistical significance of the differences in these dimensions was examined.

Long-term evaluation of the influence of smear layer on the apical sealing ability of MTA.

The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of the smear layer on apical microleakage in teeth obturated with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Fifty single-rooted central maxillary teeth were used in this study. All teeth were instrumented to size 60 by using the step-back technique.

Quasi-free methyl rotation in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8.

Using neutron inelastic scattering and diffraction, we have studied the quantum methyl rotation in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8: Zn(MeIM)(2), MeIM = 2-methylimidazolate). The rotational potential for the CH(3) groups in ZIF-8 is shown to be primarily 3-fold in character. The ground-state tunneling transitions at 1.

Enhanced H2 adsorption in isostructural metal-organic frameworks with open metal sites: strong dependence of the binding strength on metal ions.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with open metal sites exhibit a much stronger H2 binding strength than classical MOFs, due to the direct interaction between H2 and the coordinately unsaturated metal ions. Here we report a systematic study of the H2 adsorption on a series of isostructural MOFs, M2(dhtp) (M = Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn). The experimental, initial isosteric heats of adsorption for H2 (Qst) of these MOFs range from 8.

Evaluation of the radiopacity of new root canal paste/sealers by digital radiography.

The aim of the present study was to assess the radiopacity of new polydimethylsiloxane-based root canal filling paste (GuttaFlow; Coltène/Whaledent, Langenau, Germany) and resin-based root canal sealer (Adseal; Meta Biomed Co, Cheongju, Korea) and compare their radiopacity with three currently used root canal sealers (AH Plus [Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany], Epiphany [Pentron, Wallingford, CT], and Diaket [3M ESPE AG, Seefeld, Germany]) by means of direct digital radiography. Six specimens, 5 mm in diameter and 1 mm high, were performed for each material tested. After the material set, radiographs were made by using a digital sensor and a graduated aluminum stepwedge varying in thickness from 1 to 14 mm.

External magnetic field effects on a distorted kagome antiferromagnet.

We report bulk magnetization, and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements under an external magnetic field H on the weakly coupled distorted kagome system, Cu2(OD)3Cl. Our results show that the ordered state below 6.7 K is a canted antiferromagnet and consists of large antiferromagnetic ac components and smaller ferromagnetic b components.

Alkali and alkaline-earth metal amidoboranes: structure, crystal chemistry, and hydrogen storage properties.

Alkali- and alkaline-earth metal amidoboranes are a new class of compounds with rarely observed [NH2BH3](-) units. LiNH2BH3 and solvent-containing Ca(NH2BH3)2 x THF have been recently reported to significantly improve the dehydrogenation properties of ammonia borane. Therefore, metal amidoboranes, with accelerated desorption kinetics and suppressed toxic borazine, are of great interest for their potential applications for hydrogen storage.

Ventral thoracic spinal cord herniation: a commonly misdiagnosed and treatable cause of myelopathy.

Idiopathic ventral spinal cord herniation is a rare cause of progressive myelopathy that demonstrates unique radiological features. We describe a case of thoracic spinal cord herniation through an anterior dural defect and discuss the characteristic findings on magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomographic myelography. A 36-year-old man presented to our clinic with progressive leg weakness and spasticity in both legs.

Effectiveness of different gutta-percha techniques when filling experimental internal resorptive cavities.

Aim: To determine the quality of root fillings in teeth with artificial internal resorptive cavities filled with Thermafil, JS Quick-Fill, Soft Core, System B and Microseal, and by cold lateral compaction (LC) technique.

Methodology: Sixty maxillary incisor teeth were selected. After access cavity preparation and root canal instrumentation, the roots were sectioned horizontally and artificial internal resorption cavities were prepared on the canal walls.

Origin of the 150-K anomaly in LaFeAsO: competing antiferromagnetic interactions, frustration, and a structural phase transition.

From all-electron fixed-spin-moment calculations we show that ferromagnetic and checkerboard antiferromagnetic ordering in LaFeAsO are not stable and the stripe antiferromagnetic configuration with M(Fe)=0.48 microB is the only stable ground state. The main exchange interactions between Fe ions are large, antiferromagnetic, and frustrated.

Intracranial cerebral artery stenosis with associated coronary artery and extracranial carotid artery stenosis in Turkish patients.

Purpose: Although it has been demonstrated that there is a high prevalence of extracranial carotid artery stenosis (ECAS) in patients with severe coronary artery disease, intracranial cerebral artery stenosis (ICAS) is rarely mentioned. We evaluated the prevalence of ICAS in patients with ECAS having elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery to determine the relations between ICAS, ECAS and atherosclerotic risk factors.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the digital subtraction angiography findings of 183 patients with ECAS> or =50% preparing for CABG surgery.
