Bacteremia during adenoidectomy.

Objective: Although adenoidectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in children, there is no satisfactory information about the risk of bacteremia during adenoidectomy and necessity of antibiotic use. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of bacteremia during adenoidectomy and identify the organisms leading to bacteremia.

Methods: Thirty two patients who had undergone adenoidectomy at ENT Clinic of Sutcu Imam University were included in the study.

Severe microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia in a child with Brucella infection.

We present a case of severe microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia with epistaxis, gross hematuria, hemoglobinuria, and skin purpura in a child with Brucella septicemia proven by culture. The patient showed the features of this illness: leukopenia, severe hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, fragmentation of erythrocytes in the peripheral blood smear, increased erythropoiesis, megakaryopoiesis, and granulomata cell invasion in the bone marrow. The patient was treated with rifampin and doxycycline.

(51)CrEDTA colonic permeability and therapy response in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Orally administered (51)Cr-labelled ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid ((51)CrEDTA) has been used to evaluate intestinal permeability in inflammatory bowel disease, especially Crohn's disease. However, information about colonic permeability in ulcerative colitis (UC) is relatively scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the urinary excretion of orally administered (51)CrEDTA, its relation to disease activity and its response to medical therapy in patients with UC.

Combination therapy of imipramine with oxybutynin in children with enuresis nocturna.

Purpose: The treatment approach for enuresis is controversial due to the lack of consensus as to the exact causes of nocturnal enuresis. Despite various treatment modalities, pharmacotherapy still appears to be the common choice. The aim of this prospective study was the evaluation of the efficacy of combination therapy (imipramine and oxybutynin) in patients with enuresis nocturna.

Tubularized incised plate urethroplasty for distal and mid-penile hypospadias.

Tubularized incised plate urethroplasty was performed to repair 20 distal and 5 mid-penile hypospadias cases. In distal hypospadias repair meatal stenosis occurred in 1 patient and urethral fistula in another. The overall complication rate in this group was thus 10%.

Vascular effects of epinephrine, lisinopril, and chlorpromazine in diabetic and non-diabetic rats.

In this study, the vascular responses of diabetic rat femoral arteries to epinephrine were investigated. The effects of lisinopril (ACE inhibitor) on vascular epinephrine sensitivity were also tested in a different group. This study was carried out in sodium pentobarbital-anesthetized rats 8 weeks after induction of diabetes with streptozotocin.

Growth hormone stimulation tests in chronic renal failure with metabolic acidosis.

Metabolic acidosis is one of the possible causes of growth retardation in chronic renal failure (CRF). Data about the effect of metabolic acidosis on growth hormone (GH) secretion in CRF are limited. A study was carried out on eight CRF patients, hospitalized because of severe metabolic acidosis, and eight age-matched prepubertal healthy short children.

The effect of alternate-day low dose prednisolone on bone age in children with steroid dependent nephrotic syndrome.

Radius, ulna, short bones (RUS), carpal (CARP) bone age (BA), tibial cortico-diaphyseal (C/D) ratio and trabecular aspect were assessed in 19 children with steroid dependent nephrotic syndrome and 15 age matched healthy children. Both RUS and CARP BA were significantly lower than in the controls. Trabecular aspect and tibial C/D ratio did not show any statistical significance.

Characterization of multiple-antibiotic-resistant Salmonella typhimurium stains: molecular epidemiology of PER-1-producing isolates and evidence for nosocomial plasmid exchange by a clone.

We characterized epidemiologic and genetic features of nosocomially originated multiple-antibiotic-resistant Salmonella typhimurium isolates from two hospitals. A total of 32 multiply resistant strains, isolated during a 28-month period, were studied. Four resistance phenotypes were distinguished on the basis of the results of disc diffusion tests.

Electron-topological investigation of structure-antitubercular activity relationship of thiosemicarbazone derivatives.

Within the framework of the electron-topological approach the structure-antitubercular activity relationship was investigated in a series of thiosemicarbazone derivatives. The series in view included 71 compounds. For each compound conformational and quantum-chemical calculations were carried out.

Resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, caused by PER-1 beta-lactamase, in Salmonella typhimurium from Istanbul, Turkey.

Two Salmonella typhimurium isolates were studied, one as a representative from a series of neonatal meningitis cases treated at an Istanbul teaching hospital, the other from a gastro-enteritis case seen at a different Istanbul hospital. Both isolates were resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, as well as penicillins, aminoglycosides and chloramphenicol. Cephalosporin resistance depended on production of PER-1 beta-lactamase, which is an extended-spectrum class A enzyme that is only distantly related to TEM and SHV enzymes, and which was previously known only from Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates.
