Article Synopsis
  • Herbal pairs, like Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo), are two fixed herbs combined for specific clinical effectiveness, particularly in treating issues like damp-heat dysentery and qi stagnation.
  • Current research lacks a comprehensive summary on their compatibility in terms of traditional use and pharmacological effects, although studies show they have antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
  • Future research is needed to explore their interactions, the impact of different extraction methods on active components, and to test their pharmacological activity using a wider variety of models.

Background: Studies have confirmed that high dose borneol has perinatal toxicity and has a certain effect on embryonic development. However, there is little about the effect of borneol on the development of zebrafish embryos. Therefore, we compared the effects of D-borneol, L-borneol and synthetic borneol on the growth and development of zebrafish embryos, and predicted the possible mechanism of perinatal toxicity.

Coma caused by cerebral ischemia is the most serious complication of cerebral ischemia. Four-vessel occlusion can establish a cerebral ischemic coma model for disease research and drug development. However, the commonly used four-vessel occlusion method mainly involves inserting an electrocoagulation pen into the bilateral pterygoid foramen of the first cervical vertebra behind the neck to electrocoagulate the vertebral arteries.

Background: To systematically evaluate the therapeutic effect of BaitouWeng Decoction in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), evaluate its safety and effectiveness, and provide a reference for clinical medication.

Methods: The research literature on the treatment of UC with BaitouWeng Decoction was searched in databases such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, VIP database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, and PubMed. The literature was screened by setting inclusion and exclusion criteria, strictly following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and following the search strategy for literature screening, data extraction, and methodological quality evaluation.

The middle cerebral artery occlusion reperfusion (MCAO/R) model is crucial for understanding the pathological mechanisms of stroke and for drug development. However, among the commonly used modeling methods, the Koizumi method often faces scrutiny due to its ligation of the common carotid artery (CCA) and its inability to achieve adequate reperfusion. Similarly, the Longa method has been criticized for disconnecting and ligating the external carotid artery (ECA).

Numerous viral pneumonia cases have been reported in Wuhan, Hubei in December 2019. The pathogen has been identified as a novel coronavirus, which was named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The biological characteristics and pathogenesis mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 are unclear and under progress.

Two known coumarins, scopoletin (SP) and umbelliferone (UB), were isolated from Cortex Mori (CM). Their structures were elucidated by various spectroscopic analyses. Then, their effects on rat glomerular mesangial cells (RGMCs, HBZY-1) proliferation, hypertrophy, extracellular matrix (ECM) proliferation, expression of fibronectin, transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) induced by high glucose were studied in vitro model of diabetic glomerulosclerosis.

Fibroblasts migrating to peritoneum injuries play an important role in the development of postoperative peritoneal adhesions due to the excessive synthesis and deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM). This effect is mainly induced by the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). Studies indicate that elevated TGF-β1 levels and TGF-β1/Smad signaling are both implicated in the formation of peritoneal adhesions.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is encoded by the multidrug resistance (MDR1) gene and is well studied as a multi-drug resistance transporter. Peritoneal adhesion formation following abdominal surgery remains an important clinical problem. Here, we found that P-gp was highly expressed in human adhesion fibroblasts and promoted peritoneal adhesion formation in a rodent model.

Objective: To investigate the effect of Changtong oral liquid (CTOL) on the proliferation of cultured fibroblasts derived from normal peritoneum (NFs) and adhesive peritoneum (AFs) of rats.

Methods: Twenty male SD rats were randomized into 4 groups, including a normal serum group and 3 CTOL groups with CTOL treatment at low, medium or high doses. Serum samples were obtained from the abdominal arteries of the rats after oral treatment with CTOL for 7 days.
