A bacterial strain (designated as N4) of Pseudoxanthomonas was isolated from a denitrification biofilter reactor. This study examined its degradation capability of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and its denitrification ability. All results showed that, strain N4 could use DEHP as a carbon and energy source.

Experimental results showed that DEHP removal efficiency remained stable while total nitrogen removal efficiency fluctuated with the nitrate recycle ratio changes when the hydraulic loading rate at 1.1m(3)/m(2)h.

The mixed liquors were prepared by adding acclimated denitrifying activated sludge to synthetic wastewater with methanol (CH3OH) as the carbon source (chemical oxygen demand = 600 mg/L) and sodium nitrate (NaNO3) as the nitrogen source (NO3(-)-N = 50 mg/L). The results showed that the pH during denitrification could be kept constant using buffer solutions composed of KH2PO4, Na2HPO4 x 12H2O and Na2B4O7 x 10H2O.

Both performances of short-cut nitrification and ANAMMOX were stable for more than one year. Under the condition that inner temperature at 35 degrees C +/- 1 degrees C, pH 7.

The partial nitrification was achieved and maintained stably in the aerobic reactor under normal temperature (15-29 degrees C) and high DO (6-9 mg/L). The nitritation with 70%-80% nitrite accumulation efficiency was obtained when FA concentration was in the range of 1.

Then within each metal ion stimulation concentration range, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were extracted from activated sludge and its components (protein, polysaccharide and nucleic acid) contents changes were investigated. The results showed that the optimal stimulation concentration of each metal ion is 1mg x L(-1).
