Context: Uveitis is a severe autoimmune eye disease that poses a significant threat to visual health. Autophagy is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and becomes dysregulated in autoimmune conditions like uveitis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can influence autophagy and apoptosis by targeting autophagy-related genes (Atg).

Myopia can impact an individual's quality of life and induce multiple complications. In this study, we randomly divided guinea pigs into the normal control (NC) group, the lens-induced myopia (LIM) group, the normal control plus l-arginine injection (l-Arg) group, and the normal control plus saline injection (NaCl) group. The animals in each group received the relevant treatments.

This study aimed to establish a complete atlas of retinal cells in lens-induced myopia (LIM) and electroacupuncture (EA) intervention by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and to explore the potential mechanism of EA in improving experimental myopia progression in guinea pigs. scRNA-seq is used to assess changes in individual cellular gene levels in the retina of LIM- and EA-treated guinea pigs. In addition, the role of EA in slowing myopia progression by improving retinal mitochondrial function is further investigated.

Background: Myopia is one of the most common eye diseases in children and adolescents worldwide, and scleral remodeling plays a role in myopia progression. However, the identity of the initiating factors and signaling pathways that induce myopia-associated scleral remodeling is still unclear. This study aimed to identify biomarkers of scleral remodeling to elucidate the pathogenesis of myopia.

Vitamin D acts through the vitamin D receptor (VDR), and vitamin D level decreases in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in VDR alter its functions to affect the vitamin D status. This raises the question of whether VDR gene polymorphisms are associated with MM risk, which has been investigated in case‒control studies, but the results have been inconsistent.

Uveitis is an autoimmune eye disease that can be involved in the entire body and is one of the leading causes of blindness. Therefore, comprehending the mechanisms underlying the development and regulation of ocular immune responses in uveitis is crucial for designing effective therapeutic interventions. In this study, we investigated how RBPJ regulates macrophage polarization in uveitis.

Background: Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a prevalent complication of multiple myeloma (MM), due to the disease itself or its treatment. Despite extensive research, the optimal treatment for multiple myeloma peripheral neuropathy (MMPN) remains unclear. Clinical practice has shown the potential efficacy of acupuncture in managing MMPN.

Autoimmune uveitis is an intraocular inflammatory disease with a high blindness rate in developed countries such as the United States. It is pressing to comprehend the pathogenesis of autoimmune uveitis and develop novel schemes for its treatment. In the present research, we demonstrated that the Notch signaling pathway was activated, and the level of miR-223-3p was significantly reduced in rats with experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) compared with the level of normal rats.

Mitochondria is one of the most important organelles of eukaryotic cells, which is closely related to cell proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy and other life processes. Mitochondrias in biological cells are actually in a highly dynamic state. The fusion and division of mitochondria and their secondary effects play an important role in the regulation of cell life.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant clonal proliferative plasma cell tumor. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are used for antibacterial and antitumor applications in the biomedical field. This study investigated the autophagy-induced effects of ZnO NPs on the MM cell line RPMI8226 and the underlying mechanism.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of lymphoma. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles have excellent anti-tumor properties in the biomedical field. The present study aimed to explore the underlying mechanism by which ZnO nanoparticles induce toxicity in DLBCL cells (U2932) via the PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy pathway.

Article Synopsis
  • - Uveitis is a serious eye disease leading to potential blindness, and glucocorticoids (GCs) have shown promise in reducing inflammation and aiding healing, although how they work is not fully understood.
  • - The study involved female Lewis rats, grouped into control, EAU, EAU + glucocorticoid, and EAU + p38MAPK inhibitor, to investigate how GCs influence macrophage polarization in uveitis through the p38MAPK-MEF2C mechanism.
  • - Results indicated that both GC and p38MAPK inhibitor treatments reduced ocular inflammation and improved clinical outcomes by promoting a shift from pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages to anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages, confirming the importance of the

Uveitis is an immune eye disease that can seriously impair vision. Glucocorticoids (GC) have been extensively used to treat uveitis, though the mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the regulatory effects of prednisone acetate (PA) on the Th1/Th2 and Th17/Treg balance in experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) through modulating the Notch signaling pathway.

  • Acyl-CoA thioesterase (ACOT2) is implicated in lipid metabolism and its expression patterns were analyzed to assess its role in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target.
  • * ACOT2 was found to be highly expressed in AML patients compared to normal subjects and was linked to poorer overall survival rates and effective diagnostic outcomes for the disease.
  • * Functional analyses revealed that ACOT2 interacts with several genes related to lipid metabolism and is significantly associated with key processes in AML, including fatty acid elongation.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have exhibited excellent anti-tumor properties; the present study aimed to elucidate the underlying mechanism of ZnO NPs induced apoptosis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells by regulating mitochondrial division. THP-1 cells, an AML cell line, were first incubated with different concentrations of ZnO NPs for 24 hr. Next, the expression of Drp-1, Bcl-2, Bax mRNA, and protein was detected, and the effects of ZnO NPs on the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), apoptosis, and ATP generation in THP-1 cells were measured.

Fibrillin-2 (FBN2) is a major component of tissue microfibrils, and the decrease of FBN2 perturbs the signalling events mediated by transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), thereby playing a role in macular degeneration. However, the association between the retinal degeneration resulting from the abnormality of FBN2 and the activation of TGF-β signalling has not been fully addressed. In the present study, the mice were divided into a normal control group (NC group), a phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) injection group (PBS group), and an anti-FBN2 protein injection group (anti-FBN2 group), and the mice in PBS and anti-FBN2 groups received the relevant treatment via the intravitreal injection once a week for three consecutive weeks.

Rationale: Corneal dermoids are a rare cause of corneal opacification, consisting of abnormal mesoblastic tissue surrounded by epithelium. Here, we describe the case of a 1-year-old child who had a congenital corneal dermoid in the left eye since birth; thus, the patient underwent tumor excision followed by keratoplasty.

Patient Concern: A 1-year-old girl was brought to the hospital by her parents, who had been noticing a mass on the surface of her left eyeball since birth.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide due to elevated intraocular pressure, and filtering surgery can efficiently control intraocular pressure of glaucoma patients. However, failure of filtering surgery commonly results from scarring formation at the surgical site, in which fibroblast proliferation plays an essential role in the scarring process. Our previous study has demonstrated that zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles could efficiently inhibit human tenon fibroblasts (HTFs) proliferation.
