Esophageal cancer (ESC) is a malignant tumor that originates from the mucosal epithelium of the esophagus and is part of the digestive tract. Although the exact pathogenesis of ESC has not been fully elucidated, excessive oxidative stress is an important characteristic that leads to the development of many cancers. Abnormal expression of several proteins and transcription factors contributes to oxidative stress in ESCs, which alters the growth and proliferation of ESCs and promotes their metastasis.

Colorectal cancer is a prevalent malignant tumor with a complex and diverse pathogenesis. In recent years, natural products have shown promising application prospects as sources of anticancer drugs. BBR, a class of benzoquinoline alkaloids extracted from various plants, is widely used in disease treatments owing to its pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-angiogenesis properties.

Importance: Mild thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) negatively impacts quality of life, yet no clinical guidelines for its treatment are available. Existing evidence supports the use of doxycycline in treating mild TAO.

Objective: To evaluate the short-term (12 weeks) efficacy of doxycycline in treating mild TAO.

Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of complex orbital fracture reconstruction with titanium implants.

Methods: A retrospective review of 46 patients treated with complex orbital fractures reconstruction using titanium implants from January 2005 to December 2008 was conducted. The following data were recorded: age, gender, mechanism of injury, preoperative and postoperative orbital CT, visual acuity, diplopia, ocular motility and Hertel exophthalmometer.

Aim: To investigate the specialty of transcranial surgery through pterional approach for removal of cranio-orbital tumors, introduce the ophthalmological experiences of entering the orbit to reduce the incidence rate of associated complications of this operation.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of a series of 37 cases involving patients who underwent transcranial surgery through pterional approach for treatment of cranio-orbital tumors in our department in the past 8 years. Pterion approach craniotomy was performed to all patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effects of transgenic Bt rice on the rice pest Cnaphalocrocis medinalis and its natural predators before Bt rice commercialization.
  • Results show that non-transgenic rice had higher percentages of leaf damage and higher populations of C. medinalis compared to transgenic varieties, indicating that Bt rice helps control this pest.
  • The predator populations remained largely unaffected by the rice type, suggesting that the Bt rice can suppress the target pest without harming beneficial predators.

Objective: To investigate the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation on the differentiation of orbital pre-adipocytes in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) and to explore the mechanism of orbital adipose proliferation in TAO.

Methods: Orbital adipose tissues were obtained from patients with TAO undergoing orbital decompression surgery. The orbital fibroblasts cultured from orbital adipose tissues were divided into group A and group B.

Aim: To explore the role of unc5b in retinal neovascularization in murine oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR).

Methods: On postnatal 7(P7), C57BL/6J mice were exposed to 75%±2% oxygen for 5 days. On postnatal 12(P12), the mice were brought back to the room air (21% oxygen) to induce retinal neovascularization.

Objective: To investigate the procedure of transcranial operation via pterional approach for cranio-orbital communicating tumors, to improve surgery skills, to summarize the incidence of main complications and to discuss tips for avoiding damage of the normal orbital tissues.

Methods: Pterional approach was adopted for the operation. After the medial orbital wall or lateral orbital wall was bitten with rongeur and the orbital roof was removed, the extraocular muscles at orbital apex were separated and protected.

Objective: To investigate histopathologic and ultrastructural changes of extraocular muscles (EOM) in thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO).

Methods: Twelve EOM specimens from 11 patients with TAO were observed. Each of the specimen was stained with HE and observed by light microscope, and then was sectioned with ultrathin method and observed by transmission electronic microscope.

Objective: To study the cell surface antigen expression of orbital preadipocytes between patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) and healthy adults.

Methods: Tissue culture Methods were used in the cell culture of orbital preadipocytes in patients with TAO and healthy adults. Flow cytometry was used to analyze the expression of CD29, CD44, CD49d, and HLA-DR in these 2 cells.
