Purpose: To investigate the age-related prevalence of comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA).

Methods: A single-night polysomnography with video monitoring was conducted on 2176 Chinese adults (ages 18-102) to screen for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Insomnia was defined as difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or early morning awakening at least three times per week for more than three months, accompanied by daytime symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, or anxiety.

Tumor progression and limited benefits of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy have been two major challenges in the clinical management of colorectal cancer (CRC). The objective of our research was to explore the role of PLCG2 in CRC progression, tumor microenvironment, and potentiating ICB therapy. Based on bioinformatics analysis and a prospective clinical observational study, the expression, prognostic significance, and clinical relevance of PLCG2 in CRC were unveiled.

Obstructive sleep apnea frequently coexists with epilepsy, potentially influencing its pathophysiology. However, the effect of obstructive sleep apnea severity on interictal epileptiform discharges is not well understood. To explore this, we studied 108 Asian patients with epilepsy who underwent single-night polysomnography.

Background: Although neoadjuvant therapy has brought numerous benefits to patients, not all patients can benefit from it. Chemokines play a crucial role in the tumor microenvironment and are closely associated with the prognosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. Therefore, constructing a prognostic model based on chemokines will help risk stratification and providing a reference for the personalized treatment.

Introduction: Peripheral retinal refraction plays a crucial role in myopia, but the specific mechanism is not clear. We refined the retinal partitions to explore the characteristics of peripheral retinal refraction and its role in emmetropic, low, and moderate myopic children aged 6 to 12 years.

Methods: A total of 814 subjects (814 eyes) were enrolled in the study.

In the context of the escalating global health challenge posed by Alzheimer's disease (AD), this comprehensive review considers the potential of melatonin in both preventive and therapeutic capacities. As a naturally occurring hormone and robust antioxidant, accumulating evidence suggests melatonin is a compelling candidate to consider in the context of AD-related pathologies. The review considers several mechanisms, including potential effects on amyloid-beta and pathologic tau burden, antioxidant defense, immune modulation, and regulation of circadian rhythms.

Objective: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting programmed cell death-1/ligand-1 (PD-1/PD-L1), cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), and lymphocyte-activation gene-3 (LAG-3) have been widely studied and applied throughout the course of cancer treatment. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive profile of ICI-associated toxicity and elucidate the toxicity patterns of ICIs across different treatment lines.

Methods: In total, 155 cohorts comprising 24 539 eligible patients were included in the safety analysis.

DNA photolyase targets the primary ultraviolet (UV)-induced DNA lesion─cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD), attaches to it, and catalyzes its dissociation. The catalytic mechanism of DNA photolyase and the role of the conserved residue E283 remain subjects of debate. This study employs two-dimensional potential energy surface maps and minimum free energy paths calculated at the ωB97XD/6-31G/MM level to elucidate these mechanisms.

Background: Preliminary data suggests that obesity might hasten the decline in mRNA vaccine-induced immunity against SARS-CoV-2. However, whether this renders individuals with obesity more susceptible to long COVID symptoms post-vaccination remains uncertain. Given sleep's critical role in immunity, exploring the associations between obesity, probable long COVID symptoms, and sleep disturbances is essential.

Importance: Understanding the interplay between sleep duration, dietary habits, and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) is crucial for public health and diabetes prevention strategies.

Objective: To investigate the associations of type of diet and duration of sleep with the development of T2D.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Data derived from the UK Biobank baseline investigation (2006-2010) were analyzed for this cohort study between May 1 and September 30, 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates breast cancer patients in China and their involvement in decisions regarding breast reconstruction, focusing on their specific needs and the reasons behind their decision-making struggles.
  • Utilizing interviews and surveys from patients and healthcare professionals in Beijing, the research reveals that most patients are open to reconstruction, but often lack vital knowledge and resources.
  • The findings highlight that these patients face complex decision-making challenges due to insufficient support and knowledge, indicating the necessity for culturally tailored information and better training for healthcare providers in shared decision-making.

  • Conventional laparoscopic-assisted right hemicolectomy involves a small abdominal incision that can lead to postoperative complications and affect patient recovery.
  • Transvaginal natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES VIIIA) offers a solution by extracting the specimen through the vagina, avoiding the small incision.
  • A phase III study (NCT05495048) will compare NOSES VIIIA and the small-incision method in 352 female patients, focusing on 3-year disease-free survival to evaluate oncological effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how self-rated health (SRH) relates to sleep patterns in people who had COVID-19, suggesting that COVID-19 negatively impacts SRH and sleep quality.
  • Participants from 16 countries were surveyed, with findings indicating that those infected with COVID-19 reported lower SRH scores, especially if their illness was severe.
  • Changes in sleep duration after infection—both decreases and increases—were significantly linked to lower SRH scores, as well as increased fatigue and other health issues, highlighting the importance of sleep in recovery.

Background And Aims: Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a minimally invasive technique used to treat esophageal motility disorders. Opioid use has been demonstrated to adversely affect esophageal dysmotility and is associated with an increased prevalence of esophageal motility disorders. Our aim was to investigate the effect of narcotic use on success rates in patients undergoing POEM.

Background: Although laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR) is widely performed worldwide, few studies have focused on the procedure in female patients. This study investigated the characteristics and outcomes of female patients with inguinal hernias who underwent LIHR.

Materials And Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the data of 7380 patients with inguinal hernia admitted to the General Surgery Department of Ruijin Hospital and underwent LIHR from January 2001 to December 2020.

Immunophenotyping of the tumor microenvironment (TME) is essential for enhancing immunotherapy efficacy. However, strategies for characterizing the TME exhibit significant heterogeneity. Here, we show that endoplasmic reticular oxidoreductase-1α (ERO1A) mediates an immune-suppressive TME and attenuates the response to PD-1 blockade.

Salicylic acid (SA) serves as a pivotal plant hormone involved in regulating plant defense mechanisms against biotic stresses, but the extent of its biological significance in relation to peanut resistance is currently lacking. This study elucidated the involvement of salicylic acid (SA) in conferring broad-spectrum disease resistance in peanuts through the experimental approach of inoculating SA-treated leaves. In several other plants, the salicylate hydroxylase genes are the typical susceptible genes ( genes).

Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed that those with high socioeconomic deprivation faced more sleep issues like trouble falling asleep, using sleep medications, and experiencing shorter sleep durations, alongside higher HbA1c levels.
  • * The findings suggest that socioeconomic deprivation could be a significant risk factor for poor sleep health among patients with type 2 diabetes.
