In wildland firefighting, the air gap (AG) between clothing and the human body can effectively decrease heat transferred to skin but has a negative impact on thermal aging of clothing. Heat transfer to skin from a fire source can led to burn injuries and heat is transmitted between adjacent AGs parallel to the skin surface. An open AG simulator was developed to explore the dual effects of the AG on fabric thermal aging and skin thermal protection.

The development and enantioselective synthesis of two types of -symmetric spirobi[dihydrophenalene] structures is reported. The reaction proceeds via rhodium-catalyzed 2-fold asymmetric conjugate arylation of dienones followed by BF·OEt-promoted spirocyclization to give the enantiopure spiro products. Additive-dependent chemodivergent synthesis of 3,3'-diarylated 2,2',3,3'-tetrahydro-1,1'-spirobi[phenalene]-9,9'-diols (3,3'-Ar-SPHENOLs) and the corresponding spiro diary ethers from the same intermediate is achieved.

Significant differences in life-history traits between the southern population (S) and northern (N) population of the cabbage beetle make it an excellent model for studying inheritance in this insect. In the present study, we observed the life-history traits of pure strains, F, reciprocal backcross and reciprocal F progeny under a photoperiod of L:D 15:9 h at 22 °C. The S population had shorter larval development time, longer pupal time, higher body weight, growth rate and weight loss compared with the N population.

The eco-friendly features and desirable catalytic activities of Fe-based catalysts make them highly promising for propane dehydrogenation (PDH). However, simultaneously improving their stability and activity remains a challenge. Here, we present a strategy to address these issues synergistically by anchoring single-atom Fe-Cl sites in Al vacancies of AlO.

Oxygen and water generating hydrogen peroxide (HO) by optical drive is an extremely promising pathway, and the large amount of oxygen in air and natural sunlight illumination are excellent catalytic conditions. However, the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs greatly limits the photocatalytic efficiency, especially in the absence of sacrificial agents. Here, we report an InS nanosheet with an S vacancy (S-InS).

Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance is a growing health problem. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogen of major concern because of its multidrug resistance and global threat, especially in health-care settings. The pathogenesis and drug resistance of depends on its ability to form biofilms, making infections chronic and untreatable as the biofilm protects against antibiotics and host immunity.

Background: The colorectal cancer mortality rate in China has exceeded that in many developing countries and is expected to further increase owing to multiple factors, including the aging population. However, the optimal policy for colorectal cancer screening is unknown.

Methods: We synthesized the most up-to-date data using a 12-state Markov model populated with a cohort of Chinese men and women born during 1949-1988, and evaluated 16 conventional and 40 risk-tailored schemes for colorectal cancer screening, considering possible combinations of age (starting at 40 + years and ending at 75 years), frequency, and strategy (standard colonoscopy, fecal immunochemical testing with colonoscopy if positive, or risk-tailored).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how fasting during molting affects the reproductive system and egg quality in laying hens, particularly focusing on reproductive remodeling mechanisms.
  • Two hundred and forty 380-day-old Jingfen No. 6 hens were divided into four experimental groups to analyze changes across different molting stages: pre-molt, molt, recovery, and peak-laying.
  • Key findings showed that fasting led to oviduct atrophy, loss of large follicles in ovaries, and hormonal changes, while transcriptomic analysis identified important genes influencing reproductive function and egg quality improvements post-molt.

Radiotherapy and immunotherapy have already become the primary form of treatment for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but are limited by high radiotherapy dose and low immune response rate. Herein, a multi-pronged strategy using a radio-immuno-enhancer (ZnO-Au@mSiO) is developed by inducing tumor cells apoptosis and reprograming the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). The radio-immuno-enhancer employed Au as a radiosensitizer, transition Zn ions as immune activators, which not only tremendously enhances the anti-proliferative activity of radiotherapy toward cancer cells, but also activates the immune response with multi-targets to let "exhausted" T cells "back to life" by triggering immunogenic cell death (ICD), immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) that target PD-1/PD-L1 and cGAS-STING under X-ray irradiation with a low dosage.
