Background The Healthy Aging Index (HAI) has been regarded as useful in capturing the health status of multiple organ systems. However, to what extent the HAI is associated with major cardiovascular events remains largely unknown. The authors constructed a modified HAI (mHAI) to quantify the association of physiological aging with major vascular events and explored how the effects of a healthy lifestyle can modify this association.

Herein, we proposed an intramolecular conformation-locking strategy─incorporating flexible tetraphenylethylene (TPE) luminogens into the rigid scaffold of a molecular cage─to produce a molecular photoswitch with dual outputs of luminescence and photochromism in solution and in the solid states at once. The molecular cage scaffold, which restricts the intramolecular rotations of the TPE moiety, not only helps to preserve the luminescence of TPE in a dilute solution but facilitates the reversible photochromism on account of the intramolecular cyclization/cycloreversion reactions.

However, the strategies to enhance sensitivity of UV detection remain limited particularly for photochromic materials, which show colorimetric response toward UV irradiation. Guided by our initial goal of facilitating easier handling, we formulated a viologen derivative () incorporating hydrogel-based UV sensor which not only inherits the photochromism of but also engenders an unprecedented reversible photoelectrochromic response that is absent in either or hydrogel alone.

Training of viewing an altered-reality environment dichoptically has been found to reactivate human adult ocular dominance plasticity, allowing improvement of vision for amblyopia. One suspected mechanism for this training effect is ocular dominance rebalancing through interocular disinhibition. Here, we investigated whether the training modulated the neural responses reflecting interocular inhibition.

Background And Aims: The appendix has an important immune function in both health and disease, and appendectomy may influence microbial ecology and immune function. This meta-analysis aims to assess the association between appendectomy and the risk and course of Crohn's disease (CD).
Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were used to identify all studies published until June 2022.
Due to the complexity and heterogeneity in the tumor microenvironment, the efficacy of breast cancer treatment has been significantly impeded. Here, we established a living system using an engineered M13 bacteriophage through chemical cross-linking and biomineralization to remodel the tumor microenvironment. Chemically cross-linking of the engineered bacteriophage gel (M13 Gel) could in situ synthesize photothermal palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) on the pVIII capsid protein to obtain M13@Pd Gel.

Here, we identified the molecular function and binding properties of AGL16 and demonstrated its partial dependency on the SUPPRESSOR OF CONSTANS 1 (SOC1) function in regulating flowering. AGL16 bound to promoters of more than 2,000 genes via CArG-box motifs with high similarity to that of SOC1 in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana).

The essence of plant ecological stoichiometry is to study the relationships between species and their environment, including nutrient absorption, utilization and cycling processes as well as the nutrient limitation of plants. Plants can regulate nutrient elements and adapt to environmental changes. To understand the adaptation mechanism, it is important to take plants as a whole and quantify the correlation between the chemometrics of different organs.

Cu is a potential catalyst to achieve CO reduction to CO at the industrial scale, but the C-C coupling process on Cu significantly depletes CO* intermediates, thus limiting the CO evolution rate and producing many hydrocarbon and oxygenate mixtures. Herein, we tune the CO selectivity of Cu by alloying a second metal Sb into Cu, and report an antimony-copper single-atom alloy catalyst (SbCu) of isolated Sb-Cu interfaces that catalyzes the efficient conversion of CO-to-CO with a Faradaic efficiency over 95%.

In patients with severe blepharoptosis, the function of the levator muscle is usually weak. Even if a large amount of levator is resected, under-correction and recurrence often occur postoperatively. Frontalis suspension is the first choice for severe ptosis; however, the external orbital lifting force of the frontalis causes non-physiological eyelid movement.

Herein, we report an efficient separation strategy based on ion sieving in graphene oxide membrane. In the presence of a strong oxidizing reagent, the actinides (U, Np, Pu, Am) in a nitric acid solution exist in the high valent and linear dioxo form of actinyl ions while the lanthanides (Ce, Nd, Eu, Gd, etc.

This study aimed to develop a model to predict the visual outcomes of vitrectomy surgery in OGI-NLP eyes using a machine learning algorithm and to provide an interpretable system for the prediction results.
Methods: Clinical data of 459 OGI-NLP eyes were retrospectively collected from 19 medical centres across China to establish a training data set for developing a model, called 'VisionGo', which can predict the visual outcome of the patients involved and compare with the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS).

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an important global public health issue. In China, CKD affects a large number of patients and causes a huge economic burden. This study provided a new way to predict the number of patients with CKD and estimate its economic burden in China based on the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model.

Although some studies have demonstrated the efficacy and feasibility of auto-cross-linked hyaluronic (ACP) gel in preventing IUAs, controversy over its use continues. In this randomized controlled multi-center 2-arm parallel trial, we aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of ACP gel in preventing IUA after hysteroscopic electrosurgical resection and facilitate pregnancy in patients.

In this study, we analyzed LHD in newly diagnosed people living with HIV (PLWH) and its impact on HIV transmission in Northeast China. Sociodemographic information, baseline clinical data, and plasma samples obtained from all newly diagnosed PLWH in Shenyang, the largest city in Northeast China, between 2016 and 2019 were evaluated.

This methodology provides a general procedure to obtain diverse multifunctional pharmaceutically phenols and polyphenols, some of which are proven challenging to be synthesized using literature methods. Mechanism studies demonstrated that the addition of PhSiH led to the generation of active Ni(I) species, which catalyze the hydroxylation via a Ni(I)-Ni(III) pathway.

However, therapeutic strategies for rescuing RGC loss still remain challenging, and the molecular mechanism underlying RGC loss has not been fully elucidated. Here, we highlight the role of ferroptosis, a non-apoptotic form of programmed cell death characterized by iron-dependent lethal lipid peroxides accumulation, in RGC death using an experimental model of glaucoma and optic nerve crush (ONC).

Low-dimensional NbSe nanocrystals were synthesised through a simple one-pot colloidal synthesis with C18 organic solvents (octadecane, oleylalcohol, octadecanethiol, octadecene (ODE), and oleylamine (OLA)) of varied terminal functional groups. The solvent with high reducing power facilitated the nucleation of the nanoparticle, lowering threshold concentration and broadening the concentration spectrum. As a solvent, reducing agent, and capping agent, ODE functions as a primary factor in the synthesis of high-quality NbSe nanorods.
