In this paper, a novel broadband balanced-to-balanced (BTB) filtering power divider (FPD) utilizing the half-mode substrate-integrated waveguide and spoof surface plasmon polariton (HMSIW-SSPP) hybrid transmission line is introduced. Initially, a new HMSIW-SSPP unit cell is proposed, demonstrating a lower upper cut-off frequency compared to the classical HMSIW-SSPP unit cell. Building upon this unit cell, a bandpass BTB FPD is devised employing dual-layer stacked substrates, enabling independent control over the passband's lower and upper cut-off frequencies through specific physical dimensions.

The rapid development of synthetic biology has significantly improved the capabilities of mono-culture systems in converting different substrates into various value-added bio-chemicals through metabolic engineering. However, overexpression of biosynthetic pathways in recombinant strains can impose a heavy metabolic burden on the host, resulting in imbalanced energy distribution and negatively affecting both cell growth and biosynthesis capacity. Synthetic consortia, consisting of two or more microbial species or strains with complementary functions, have emerged as a promising and efficient platform to alleviate the metabolic burden and increase product yield.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on the Annonaceae plant family to explore how climate and geographical events contribute to species diversification in tropical forests, known for their high biodiversity.
  • - Findings indicate that global temperature influences Annonaceae’s rapid diversification more than time or constant models, with niche divergence occurring slightly later than the increase in diversification rate.
  • - The research reveals that diversification shifts in Annonaceae are not directly linked to specific climatic changes or biogeographic events but suggest that increased competition among species may lead to later niche divergence in increasingly seasonal environments.

The construction of bioartificial livers, such as liver organoids, offers significant promise for disease modeling, drug development, and regenerative medicine. However, existing methods for generating liver organoids have limitations, including lengthy and complex processes (taking 6-8 weeks or longer), safety concerns associated with pluripotency, limited functionality of pluripotent stem cell-derived hepatocytes, and small, highly variable sizes (typically ≈50-500 µm in diameter). Prolonged culture also leads to the formation of necrotic cores, further restricting size and function.

Load-bearing biological tissues, such as cartilage and muscles, exhibit several crucial properties, including high elasticity, strength, and recoverability. These characteristics enable these tissues to endure significant mechanical stresses and swiftly recover after deformation, contributing to their exceptional durability and functionality. In contrast, while hydrogels are highly biocompatible and hold promise as synthetic biomaterials, their inherent network structure often limits their ability to simultaneously possess a diverse range of superior mechanical properties.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging mainly uses backscattered light to visualize the structural and functional information on biological tissues. In particular, OCT angiography can not only map the capillary networks but also capture the blood flow in the tissue microenvironment, making it a good candidate for neuroimaging and tumor imaging and in real time. To further improve the detection accuracy of cancer or brain disorders, it is essential to develop a natural and nontoxic contrast agent for enhanced OCT imaging in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window.

In arid and semi-arid areas with <400 mm of precipitation, evapotranspiration (ET) accounts for about 80% of precipitation and is the main water consumer in the watershed. However, vegetation greening in recent years will increase ET and exacerbate the aridity of the area by affecting soil moisture in the root system. Vegetation changes are regional and spatially heterogeneous, therefore, in order to characterize ET changes under vegetation dynamics, it is necessary to expand the spatial scale of ET simulation.
