Objective: To examine the DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) mRNA and protein levels in endometrioid and serous cancers and to study the relationship between DNA methyltransferase expression and endometrial cancer development.

Methods: Normal endometrium, Grade I and Grade III endometrioid carcinoma tissues and cell lines, as well as serous cancer tissues, were analyzed for DNMT expression. Real-time PCR and Western blot techniques were employed to measure the mRNA and protein levels of the four DNA methyltransferases, DNMT1, DNMT2, DNMT3A, and DNMT3B.

Objective: To observe the mRNA expression of Th1/Th2 cytokines in hypopharyngeal neoplasms and to explore the pathogenesis of it.

Method: The gene expression of Th1/Th2 cytokines in patients with hypopharyngeal neoplasms was detected by RT-PCR.

Result: The cytokines expression of Th2 was significantly stronger than Th1 in tissue of hypopharyngeal carcinoma.

Objective: Effects of red palm oil on major plasma carotenoids, tocopherol, retinol and serum lipids were evaluated when used in Chinese diet.

Methods: Red palm oil group (RPO) composed of 20 male subjects(aged 18-32) and soybean oil group (SBO) composed of 22 male subjects (aged 18-32). Dietary fat provided about 28% of total calories, and the test oil accounted for about 60% of total dietary fat.

Fifty-eight isolates of Mycosphaerella pinodes, collected from western Canada, New Zealand, France, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, were analyzed for pathogenic and genetic variation according to their virulence on six differential cultivars of field pea (AC Tamor, Bohatyre, Danto, Majoret, Miko, and Radley) and amplified fragment length polymorphism markers. The 56 isolates were classified into 15 pathotypes. Pathotype 1 consisted of 31 isolates that were virulent on all six pea differential cultivars.

Unlabelled: This study aimed to analysis the relationship among body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with chronic diseases risk factors--serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceridaemia(TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting blood glucose (FBG), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the prevalence of chronic diseases. The data was collected from 1995 to 1998 in the study of community base integrated intervention of non-communicable chronic diseases.

Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in male was 41.

Objective: In order to supply an effective reference of early injury time estimation and explore the time limit of detection of EDA\EDB mRNA in human skin samples, the expression of alternative splicing segment of fibronectin--EDA\EDB in incised wound of human skin were studied.

Methods: Using in situ hybridization with DIG-labeled anti-sense RNA probe, the expression of FN EDA\EDB domain was detected in human skin incised wound at the early stage of injury (from 30 min to 3 h).

Results: The positive expression rates of FN-EDA\EDB immediately after injury and area far away from wound were same as the control group.

With the development of genetic maps and the identification of the most-likely positions of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on these maps, molecular markers for lodging resistance can be identified. Consequently, marker-assisted selection (MAS) has the potential to improve the efficiency of selection for lodging resistance in a breeding program. This study was conducted to identify genetic loci associated with lodging resistance, plant height and reaction to mycosphaerella blight in pea.

Objective: Construct a recombinant plasmid pET28a-EDA-EDB, prepare the fusion EDA-EDB protein.

Methods: For the production of recombinant fibronectin EDA-EDB in Escherichia coli, the EDA and EDB segments were separated from pGEM2-EDA/EDB and recomposed with two additional amino acids, then cloned into the expression vector pET28a. pET system to express EDA-EDB fusion protein and 6 x His/Ni-NTA system to purify it in a single step were used.

To identify the influence of different calcium contents among different calcium agents on absorbing and born density of rats, wistar rats are fed with diet containing different contents of calcium of different calcium agents. 3-day calcium metabolization experiment is carried out in the fourth week and atomic absorption spectrophotometry is applied to measure the calcium content of their dejecta and to estimate apparent absorptivity. Rats are killed in the twelfth week, and their thighbones are peeled.

We studied the relationship between apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism and persistent vegetative state (PVS) to explore the genetics background of PVS, and evaluated the effect of ApoE gene polymorphism on lipid levels in plasma. The ApoE genotype of fifty-six patients with PVS and fifty-three controls were determined by PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Plasma lipid levels were measured by using routine methods.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of superoxide anion on the apoptosis of cultured fibroblasts and the protective role of selenium and Vitamin E.

Methods: Cultured fibroblasts (NIH3T3), with or without selenium or vitamin E in the medium, were treated by superoxide anion produced by xanthine/xanthine oxidase reaction system and changes in cell structure and DNA were observed microscopically and electrophoretically.

Results: Apoptosis was observed when superoxide anion at a concentration of 5 nmol/L or 10 nmol/L had acted on the fibroblasts for 5-10 h.

This study investigated the food consumption patterns of 430 Beijing Chinese adults and assessed the impact on these patterns of the following socio-demographic characteristics: gender, age, educational achievement, and gross household income. Food intake by category, food variety and meal patterns were assessed using a 156-item food frequency questionnaire. It was found that gender and age were the most important factors to influence food consumption patterns.

Biochemical evidence on lens culture suggests that antioxidant nutrients can protect lens against peroxidation caused by radiation. A case-control study was carried out on 262 middle aged (45-54) and aged (55-64) subjects. The relationship between biochemical markers of antioxidant status and senile lens changes (including cataract) was examined in 131 subjects with senile lens changes and 131 control subjects with clear lens.

The activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GSSG-R), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and free radicals were measured, and the morphological changes were observed in the lens of control rats, selenium-deficient (SeD) and/or vitamin E deficient (VED) rats. The activities of GSH-Px in the lens of SeD rats decreased significantly. The GSH-Px activities of lens were positively related to erythrocytes selenium level.

Two hybridomas stably secreting monoclonal antibodies (McAb) against sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV) were constructed by fusing mouse myeloma (Sp2/0-Ag14) with mouse splenocytes immunized with SPFMV-LF. The McAb secreted by the two hybridomas specifically reacted with both SPFMV-LF (China strain) and SPFMV-RC (American strain) in dot-blot-ELISA. A large amount of McAb was produced with BALB/c mice.

Keshan disease-an endemic cardiomyopathy in China.

Virchows Arch A Pathol Anat Histopathol

October 1983

Keshan disease, an endemic cardiomyopathy in China, was prevalent in rural areas located in a long belt region where the selenium content was low in foods. Intervention studies with well controlled subjects revealed a prophylactic effect of sodium selenite. Multifocal necrosis and fibrous replacement of the myocardium characterized the histopathological features and myocytolysis was present in most cases.
