Background: Failure rates in the management of recurrent posterior shoulder instability remain a concern. Cadaveric studies have established that posterior capsulolabral tears, glenoid retroversion, and posterior glenoid bone loss result in increased posterior humeral head translation in the setting of a posteriorly directed force. A high and flat acromion has recently been associated with posterior instability.

Introduction: Depression and pain co-occur, even during adolescence. However, there is limited knowledge on the association between pain and lifetime depression, and which biopsychosocial measures are associated with this co-occurrence.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) two-year follow-up.

Article Synopsis
  • Approximately 10% of lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD) have mucinous histology (LUADMuc), which is linked to a lighter/absent smoking history and a higher prevalence of KRAS mutations compared to LUAD without this histology (LUADnon-muc).
  • A study analyzed features and treatment outcomes of LUADMuc and LUADnon-muc patients, revealing LUADMuc patients had less aggressive disease characteristics and a poorer response to current therapies, especially immunotherapy.
  • Overall, LUADMuc showed lower objective response rates, shorter progression-free and overall survival compared to LUADnon-muc, highlighting a need for more effective treatment strategies for this subgroup.

The locus coeruleus (LC) is among the first brain structures impacted by Alzheimer's disease (AD), and noradrenergic denervation may contribute to early neurovascular dysfunction in AD. Mechanistic links between the LC and cerebral perfusion have been demonstrated in rodents, but there have been no similar studies in aging humans. Community-dwelling older adults with no history of stroke or dementia (N=66) underwent structural (T1-MPRAGE; T1-FSE) and perfusion (resting pCASL) MRI.

Here we report a series of nitrogen-rich conjugated macrocycles that mimic the structure and function of semiconducting 2D metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks while providing greater solution processability and surface tunability. Using a new tetraaminotriphenylene building block that is compatible with both coordination chemistry and dynamic covalent chemistry reactions, we have synthesized two distinct macrocyclic cores containing Ni-N and phenazine-based linkages, respectively. The fully conjugated macrocycle cores support strong interlayer stacking and accessible nanochannels.

The distribution of counterions and dopants within electrically doped semicrystalline conjugated polymers, such as poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT), plays a pivotal role in charge transport. The distribution of counterions in doped films of P3HT with controlled crystallinity was examined using polarized resonant soft X-ray scattering (P-RSoXS). The changes in scattering of doped P3HT films containing trifluoromethanesulfonimide (TFSI) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (FTCNQ) as counterions to the charge carriers revealed distinct differences in their nanostructure.

Purpose: To develop a novel grading scale for assessing conjunctival inflammation in cicatrizing conjunctivitis associated with Pemphigoid.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of digital slit-lamp images for patients with cicatricial pemphigoid in which best-quality conjunctival images for each eyelid at each photographic session was selected and anonymized. These images were subsequently prospectively assessed for inflammation severity on a scale of 0-4+ by a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in pemphigoid.

Article Synopsis
  • Fibrosis contributes to serious damage in organs, but treatments targeting specific activators have often failed, leading researchers to focus on the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR) as a key player in fibrotic diseases like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
  • In IPF, myofibroblasts highly express LIF, and fibroblasts in key fibrotic areas coexpress LIF and LIFR, demonstrating LIFR's role in amplifying signals from other fibrotic drivers like TGFβ1, IL-4, and IL-13.
  • Blocking LIFR reduces the activation of profibrotic genes and highlights LIFR's function as a master amplifier of harmful signals

A sustainable solution to prevent the waste of fruits and vegetables from spoilage is the use of edible coatings or films. This research project aimed to create a fresh coating recipe that could effectively extend the shelf life of mangoes. The coating was composed of chitosan, glycerol, and gum Arabic mixed with the extract obtained from the extraction of Cleistocalyx operculatus plant.

Importance: Current chemotherapy regimens for patients with ERBB2 (formerly HER2)-positive breast cancer are associated with considerable morbidity. These patients may benefit from more effective and less toxic therapies.

Objective: To evaluate the safety, immunogenicity, and preliminary efficacy of intratumoral (IT) delivery of conventional type 1 dendritic cells (cDC1) in combination with ERBB2-targeted therapies.

Importance: Discrimination in the workforce is a barrier to achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion. A previous study of ophthalmologists in Australia and New Zealand reported high rates of discrimination, but little is known about discrimination among ophthalmologists in the US.

Objective: To describe the frequency, nature, and outcomes of discrimination experienced by US ophthalmologists and trainees.

  • A study conducted in 2021 and 2022 collected over 7,300 samples from 36 pepper fields in southwestern France to investigate the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) affecting Espelette pepper.
  • Five new natural host species of CMV were identified, including Arum italicum and Trifolium incarnatum.
  • A specific CMV variant was found to be very common in pepper crops (78%) and some wild plants (8%), and this variant has been previously reported in France, dating back to at least 2009.

Background: Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is commonly used to reduce spasticity in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Children with CP have an increased risk of spinal deformities that increase with age and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level. Few studies have considered the risk of spinal deformity post-SDR by GMFCS level.

The standard redox potentials of metal nanoparticles are important for understanding their chemical properties. Traditionally, these redox potentials are measured by using voltammetry. Although voltammetry is fast and cost-effective, loading or landing the nanoparticles on electrodes alters their electrochemical properties, posing a challenge for accurately determining their intrinsic redox potentials.

Metal-organic complexes (MOCs) have extensively been studied as prominent components in interface engineering. Once the designated missions of MOC films are achieved, or while they are still operational, it is preferred that the films undergo degradation on demand in certain circumstances. Current research on MOC-film degradation predominantly relies on chemical treatment, which can alter the states and conditions of specific systems.

Background: An explosion in a Chinese factory in 2016 caused a global shortage of essential broad-spectrum antibiotic piperacillin-tazobactam. Hitherto, no detailed, policy-relevant analysis has been conducted on this major shortage event. Thus, we aimed to (1) investigate causes; (2) describe supply chain challenges; and (3) uncover policy gaps to support possible mitigation actions.
