Amino acids in wine grapes function as precursors for various secondary metabolites and play a vital role in plant growth, development, and stress resistance. The amino acid/auxin permease () genes encode a large family of transporters; however, the identification and function of the gene family in grapes remain limited. Consequently, we conducted a comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of all genes in grapes, encompassing genome sequence analysis, conserved protein domain identification, chromosomal localization, phylogenetic relationship analysis, and gene expression profiling.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) originates in the nasopharyngeal mucosa, the lateral wall of the nasopharynx. A significant challenge in NPC management is skull-base bone invasion (SBBI), which affects prognosis and treatment planning. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the primary diagnostic tool for SBBI in NPC patients; however, the detection of SBBI can be challenging due to skull-base complexity and overlapping MRI signals.

Tuberculous arthritis of the elbow joint (TAEJ) is a relatively rare infectious bone and joint disease. Misdiagnosed owing to inconspicuous early symptoms, often the elbow joint has suffered serious damage at the time of treatment. This study retrospectively investigated the clinical manifestations, population characteristics, clinical diagnosis, surgical treatment, and functional recovery of elbow joint tuberculosis (TB).

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term survival outcomes of esophagectomy with off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) vs. esophagectomy alone.

Methods: A total of 1798 patients who received esophagectomy between January 2010 and February 2020 were included and divided into the 38 patients who underwent OPCABG followed by esophagectomy (OP + ES group) and 1760 patients had only esophagectomy (ES group).

Isoniazid and streptomycin are vital drugs for treating tuberculosis, which are utilized as efficient anti-tuberculosis agents. This paper presents a novel visible-light-driven composite photocatalyst TiC/Bi/BiOI, which was built from TiC nanosheets and Bi/BiOI microspheres. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors based on TiC/Bi/BiOI were synthesized for isoniazid identification, which showed a linear concentration range of 0.

Objectives: Anastomotic leak (AL) is one of the most serious complications after oesophageal cancer surgery. A high cervical anastomosis using a narrow gastric tube based on optimized procedures has the potential to reduce the AL after a McKeown oesophagectomy.

Methods: A narrow gastric tube was defined as 2-2.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of perioperative immunotherapy (using tislelizumab) in combination with chemotherapy for patients with locally advanced resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), building on previous phase II clinical trials that showed promising results.
  • - A total of 73 patients were treated with neoadjuvant immunotherapy and chemotherapy, with some receiving further adjuvant treatment based on their response after surgery; the main focus is on the 2-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates in patients who did not achieve a complete response.
  • - This trial, approved by the Ethics Committee of Shanghai Chest Hospital, is the first of its kind to explore the safety and efficacy of this treatment approach, hypoth

Background: The accurate clinical staging of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is pivotal for guiding treatment strategies. However, the current precision in staging for clinical T (cT)2 and cT3 stages remains unsatisfactory. This article discusses the role of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) in the clinical staging and formulation of neoadjuvant treatment strategies for locally advanced operable ESCC.

Objective: The intricate relationship between sleep deprivation (SD) and cognitive performance has long been a subject of research. Our study offers a novel angle by closely examining the neurobiological underpinnings of sustained attention deficits through the lens of the fronto-parietal network (FPN). Using state-of-the-art imaging techniques, we delve into the changes in spontaneous brain activity after SD and explore their associations with performance on the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT).

Background: Salvage esophagectomy, indicated for some patients with locally recurrent/persistent disease after definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT), reportedly has high postoperative complications. This study aims to compare the safety and efficacy of dCRT followed by salvage esophagectomy (DCRE) with planned esophagectomy after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRE) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all locally advanced ESCC patients treated with DCRE or NCRE at Shanghai Chest Hospital from 2018 to 2021.

NOTCH1, a member of the Notch family, is up-expression in advanced liver cancer (LC) patients and is associated with tumor sizes, tumor stage, metastasis, and invasion. A few studies have discovered the contribution of NOTCH1 variants to LC risk. Our purpose was to assess the relationship of NOTCH1 rs10521, rs2229971, and rs4489420 to LC risk.

Background/aims: The prognosis for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cirrhosis is poor. The risk of death also increases in patients with esophagogastric varices (EGV). Based on routine clinical features and related noninvasive parameters, a nomogram prediction model was developed in this study to facilitate the early identification of EGV in HCC patients.

Background: Esophageal cancers present a significant burden of disease and remain one of the most lethal of cancers worldwide, particular in China. Surgical treatment remains the cornerstone of esophageal cancers, and a real-world data from a high-volume esophageal cancer center have guiding significance in evaluation of the current clinical practice. This report describes the clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes, and survival of surgical treatment in patients with esophageal cancer in Shanghai Chest Hospital (SCH).

A multimodality treatment conference with experts from across East Asia was held to establish a consensus for conversion therapy. An agreement was reached that conversion therapy was defined as surgery or chemoradiotherapy (CRT) aiming at cure after initial treatment for tumors that were initially unresectable due to adjacent organ invasion or distant metastasis.

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of candidate genes also affects the occurrence and prognosis of liver cancer. We mainly explored the effects of PIK3R3 and NOTCH2 polymorphisms on liver cancer risk among Chinese people.

Methods: Four SNPs (rs785468, rs785467, rs3795666, and rs17024525 in PIK3R3 and NOTCH2) from 709 liver cancer patients and 700 healthy controls were genotyped using the Agena MassARRAY system.

Introduction: Robot-assisted oesophagectomy (RAE) and thoracolaparoscopic oesophagectomy (TLE) are surgical techniques for the treatment of oesophageal cancer. This study aimed to compare the perioperative and mid-term outcomes of RAE versus TLE for patients with locally advanced oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT).

Methods: Consecutive patients receiving nCRT plus RAE or TLE were retrospectively included in this single-institution study from January 2016 to January 2021.

Methoxypyrazines (MPs) are a unique class of volatile compounds containing nitrogenous heterocyclics that impart green bell, vegetal and herbal odors to red grape berries and wines. In this study, the quality and MPs levels of grape berries from six representative red wine grape varieties were determined in the two consecutive years. The results showed that, at maturity, the highest total soluble solid was observed in Petit Verdot grape berries in the two consecutive years.
