Spatiotemporal evolution and driving forces of landscape structure and habitat quality in river corridors with ceased flow: A case study of the Yongding River corridor in Beijing, China.

Flow cessation leads to severe degradation of river corridor landscape structure, habitat quality, and ecological functions. This study focuses on the representative river with ceased flow in northern China, the Yongding River plain section. Utilizing long-term, high-resolution satellite remote sensing imagery and the InVEST model, we analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution of landscape structure and habitat quality (HQ) before and after river corridor flow cessation over the past 50 years.

Brace roots are the primary organs for water and nutrient absorption, and play an important role in lodging resistance. Dissecting the genetic basis of brace root traits will facilitate breeding new varieties with lodging resistance and high yield. In present study, genome-wide association study (GWAS) and genomic selection (GS) for brace root penetrometer resistance (PR), root number (RN), and tier number (TN) were conducted in a multi-parent doubled haploid (DH) population.

Nasal absorption of oxycodone predicted using a novel computational fluid dynamics-physiologically based pharmacokinetic model.

Oxycodone hydrochloride (HCl) extended release (ER) tablet is an abuse-deterrent formulation that uses a physical barrier to make it more difficult to crush tablets prior to abuse via various routes. A previously conducted in vivo pharmacokinetics (PK) study showed that particle size exhibited significant effects on PK. Here, a computational modeling study using a novel combined computational fluid dynamics and physiologically based PK model was applied to better understand the mechanisms that produce differences in PK according to particle size and formulation type for nasally insufflated oxycodone HCl immediate release (IR) and ER tablets.

Multidimensional stress and self-harm in Chinese preadolescents: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Limited research has been conducted on self-harm among preadolescents in China. This study investigated the influence of multidimensional stress on high levels of self-harm behavior in preadolescents.

Method: This large-scale cross-sectional study of 7-14-year-old primary school students in grades 3-6 was conducted in Southwest China between September and December 2020.

Compensatory adaptation of parallel motor pathways promotes skilled forelimb recovery after spinal cord injury.

Skilled forelimb patterning is regulated by the corticospinal tract (CST) with support from brainstem regions. When the CST is lesioned, there is a loss of forelimb function; however, if indirect pathways remain intact, rehabilitative training can facilitate recovery. Following spinal cord injury, rehabilitation is thought to enhance the reorganization and plasticity of spared supraspinal-propriospinal circuits, aiding functional recovery.

Integration of GWAS models and GS reveals the genetic architecture of ear shank in maize.

Maize is one of the most important crops for human food, animal feed, and industrial raw materials. Ear shank length (ESL) and ear shank node number (ESNN) are crucial selection criteria in maize breeding, impacting grain yield and dehydration rate during mechanical harvesting. To unravel the genetic basis of ESL and ESNN in maize, an association panel consisting of 379 multi-parent doubled-haploid (DH) lines was developed for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and genomic selection (GS).

Reverse engineering of Onivyde® - Irinotecan liposome injection.

Onivyde® is an intravenous irinotecan liposomal injection approved by the FDA for the treatment of gemcitabine-refractory metastatic adenocarcinoma of the pancreas in combination with fluorouracil and leucovorin. In the Onivyde® formulation, irinotecan is encapsulated in the inner compartment of the liposome using sucrose octasulfate as a trapping agent, and stabilized by a pegylated lipid membrane, resulting in prolonged circulation in the body. Due to its complex formulation design, there is limited information available regarding the critical quality attributes (CQAs) of Onivyde® and suitable methods for evaluating these attributes.

Purpose: Orthodontic treatment often involves bonding brackets to teeth, and the protocols for natural enamel differ from those for prosthodontically restored teeth. With the rising number of adult orthodontic patients, many present with zirconia crowns. This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of ceramic orthodontic brackets bonded to transition dental zirconia, which combines 3Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP powders.

Real‑world evaluation of the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in the treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

The present study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based therapy in patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Therefore, eligible patients with histologically confirmed MBC, treated with ICI-based therapy, were enrolled. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) and the secondary endpoints included objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), overall survival (OS) and safety.

Some mtDNA-encoded proteins have been reported to be reduced after myocardial ischemic injury.

Relationship Between Evolutionary Diversity and Aboveground Biomass During 150 Years of Natural Vegetation Regeneration in Temperate China.

While the link between plant species diversity and biomass has been well-studied, the impact of evolutionary diversity on community biomass across long timescales or ongoing change remains a subject of debate. We elucidated the association between evolutionary diversity and community aboveground biomass (AGB) using an ideal experimental system with over 150-year history of natural vegetation regeneration. Higher phylogenetic diversity facilitated the sampling effect under the influence of environmental filtering, and caused an increase in AGB.

The Etiology and Pathogenesis of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: The Roles of Sex Hormones and Anatomy.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) mainly causes lower urinary tract symptoms in ageing men, but its exact etiology and pathogenesis have not been established. The objective of this review was to design an update on the advances of human BPH research. We undertook a literature search for identifying studies of the roles of sex hormones (androgens and estrogens) in the onset and development of human BPH using the Pubmed database.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a natural polyphenol with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, the exact role of it in regulating intestinal health under oxidative stress is not fully understood. This study aims to investigate the effects of dietary CGA supplementation on the intestinal health of weaned piglets under oxidative stress, and to explore its regulatory mechanism.

Over-expression of LsEXPA6, a lettuce expansin gene, improves cadmium stress tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis.

Cadmium (Cd) is a harmful heavy metal that is highly toxic to plants and animals. Expansins are cell wall proteins inducing cell wall loosening and participate in all plant growth and development processes which are associated with cell wall modifications. We investigated lettuce's expansin gene LsEXPA6 and found that LsEXPA6 overexpression Arabidopsis lines were much more resistant to cadmium stress.

Manufacture, characterization, and elucidation of drug release mechanisms of etonogestrel implants based on ethylene vinyl acetate.

In this work, etonogestrel implants were manufactured using coextrusion. The purpose of the study was to correlate changes in microstructure and transport properties that occurred in etonogestrel implants to drug release mechanisms. The implants consisted of an EVA 28 (28 % vinyl acetate) core containing dispersed and dissolved etonogestrel, and an EVA 15 (15 % vinyl acetate) skin.

Differential effects of exercise and hormone treatment on spinal cord injury-induced changes in micturition and morphology of external urethral sphincter motoneurons.

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in lesions that destroy tissue and spinal tracts, leading to deficits in locomotor and autonomic function. We have previously shown that after SCI, surviving motoneurons innervating hindlimb muscles exhibit extensive dendritic atrophy, which can be attenuated by treadmill training or treatment with gonadal hormones post-injury. We have also shown that following SCI, both exercise and treatment with gonadal hormones improve urinary function.

Fibronectin type III domain containing 4 (FNDC4) is highly homologous with FNDC5, which possesses various cardiometabolic protective functions. Shiitake mushrooms () are renowned as the "King of mountain treasures" in China due to their abundant nutritional and health-enhancing properties. Intensive chemical investigations of the fruiting bodies and mycelium of Shiitake mushrooms () afforded five new compounds (), named lentinmacrocycles A-C and lentincoumarins A-B, along with fifteen known compounds (). Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including one-and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) NMR spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS).

Changes in Human Meibum Lipid Composition Related to the Presence and Severity of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

Changes in meibum composition and quantity in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) result in tear film instability and dry eye. This exploratory study aimed to identify changes in (O-acyl)-ω-hydroxy fatty acid (OAHFA) and hydrocarbon chain (HC) unsaturation levels in meibum related to the presence and severity of MGD. Meibum samples were collected from 3 cohorts of adults with no MGD, mild-to-moderate MGD, and severe MGD in a noninterventional clinical trial (NCT01979887).

Improving Computer-aided Detection for Digital Breast Tomosynthesis by Incorporating Temporal Change.

Purpose To develop a deep learning algorithm that uses temporal information to improve the performance of a previously published framework of cancer lesion detection for digital breast tomosynthesis. Materials and Methods This retrospective study analyzed the current and the 1-year-prior Hologic digital breast tomosynthesis screening examinations from eight different institutions between 2016 and 2020. The dataset contained 973 cancer and 7123 noncancer cases.
