A review of rodent models of peritoneal dialysis and its complications.

This article reviews the available rodent models of peritoneal dialysis (PD) that have been developed over the past 20 years and the complications associated with their use. Although there are several methods used in different studies, the focus of this article is not to review or provide detailed summaries of these methods. Rather, this article reviews the most common methods of establishing a dialysis model in rodents, the assays used to observe function of the peritoneum in dialysis, and how these models are adapted to study peritonitis and peritoneal fibrosis.

Different effects of bisphenol-A on memory behavior and synaptic modification in intact and estrogen-deprived female mice.

Bisphenol-A (BPA) has the capability of interfering with the effects of estrogens on modulating brain function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of BPA on memory and synaptic modification in the hippocampus of female mice under different levels of cycling estrogen. BPA exposure (40, 400 μg/kg/day) for 8 weeks did not affect spatial memory and passive avoidance task of gonadally intact mice but improved ovariectomy (Ovx)-induced memory impairment, whereas co-exposure of BPA with estradiol benzoate (EB) diminished the rescue effect of EB on memory behavior of Ovx mice.

Gold and gold-palladium alloy nanoparticles on heterostructured TiO2 nanobelts as plasmonic photocatalysts for benzyl alcohol oxidation.

Plasmonic photocatalysts composed of Au and bimetallic Au-Pd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) on one-dimensional TiO2 nanobelts (TiO2-NBs) were used for the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol under visible light irradiation. Remarkable light-promoted activity was observed for the as-synthesized M/TiO2-NB (M = Au, Au-Pd) nanostructures based on the TiO2(B)/anatase heterostructured nanobelt. The difference in band structure and the well matched interface between the TiO2(B) and anatase phases, coupled with the one-dimensional nanostructure, enable an enhanced charge transfer within the heterostructured nanobelt.

Histamine-releasing factor/translationally controlled tumor protein plays a role in induced cell adhesion, apoptosis resistance and chemoresistance in non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Mounting evidence has proved that cellular adhesion confers resistance to chemotherapy in multiple lymphomas. The molecular mechanism underlying cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR) is, however, poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the expression and biologic function of histamine-releasing factor (HRF) in non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs).

Bipolar radiofrequency ablation for liver tumors: comparison of contrast-enhanced ultrasound with contrast-enhanced MRI/CT in the posttreatment imaging evaluation.

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in treatment response evaluation after percutaneous bipolar radiofrequency ablation (BRFA) for liver tumors.

Methods: From May 2012 to May 2014, 39 patients with 73 tumors were treated by BRFA. One month after the treatment, CEUS and CEMRI/CECT were conducted to evaluate the treatment response.

High prevalence of metallo-β-lactamase among carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in a teaching hospital in China.

The aim of this study was to characterize the carbapenemases in carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-KP) from a Chinese teaching hospital. A total of 40 CR-KPs were screened for the presence of carbapenemases. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by agar dilution.

To explore the mechanisms for steep pulse irreversible electroporation technology to kill the lung cancer cell L9981. The apoptosis, cells mitochondrial membrane potential, internal PH changes and the intra-cellular calcium ions concentration were detected after steep pulses acted on the human large cell lung cancer cell L9981. Apoptosis test results indicated that cancer cells mainly experienced necrosis and apoptosis.

Advanced research on anti-tumor effects of amygdalin.

Malignant tumors are the major disease that cause serious damage to human health, and have been listed as the premier diseases which seriously threatened human health by World Health Organization (WHO). In recent years the development of antitumor drugs has been gradually transformed from cytotoxic drugs to improving the selectivity of drugs, overcoming multidrug resistance, development of new targeted drugs and low toxicity with high specificity drugs. Amygdalin is a natural product that owns antitumor activity, less side effects, widely sourced and relatively low priced.

[Present state of occupational hazards in automobile maintenance industry in Beijing, China].

Objective: To explore the present state of occupational hazards and health status of workers in the automobile maintenance industry.

Methods: The monitoring results of occupational hazards in 25 automobile maintenance companies, occupational health examination results of 751 male workers in 63 automobile maintenance companies, and physical examination results of 205 male students in one Research Institute were statistically analyzed in 2012.

Results: The concentrations of benzene, toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, and butyl acetate in the workplace were 0.

Sex-specific effects of long-term exposure to bisphenol-A on anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in adult mice.

Humans are routinely exposed to low levels of bisphenol A (BPA), an environmental endocrine disruptor, which is widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics. The effects of perinatal exposure to BPA have been shown to affect various aspects of social behaviors such as anxiety and depression in adult offspring. Because sex hormones play a critical role in neurobehavior in adulthood, it is possible that long-term exposure to BPA has widespread effects on these emotional behaviors in adulthood.

Solid hypo-echoic thyroid nodules on ultrasound: the diagnostic value of acoustic radiation force impulse elastography.

The aim of the study described here was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography in the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant solid hypo-echoic thyroid nodules (SHTNs) on ultrasound. In this retrospective study, 183 histologically proven SHTNs in 159 patients were enrolled. Conventional US, as well as Virtual Touch tissue imaging (VTI) and Virtual Touch tissue quantification (VTQ) of ARFI elastography, was performed on each nodule.

Neutralizing murine TGFβR2 promotes a differentiated tumor cell phenotype and inhibits pancreatic cancer metastasis.

Elevated levels of TGFβ are a negative prognostic indicator for patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; as a result, the TGFβ pathway is an attractive target for therapy. However, clinical application of pharmacologic inhibition of TGFβ remains challenging because TGFβ has tumor suppressor functions in many epithelial malignancies, including pancreatic cancer. In fact, direct neutralization of TGFβ promotes tumor progression of genetic murine models of pancreatic cancer.

Acoustic radiation force impulse imaging: a new tool for the diagnosis of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma.

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of ARFI imaging in differentiating between benign and malignant thyroid nodules <1 cm.

Materials And Methods: 173 pathologically proven thyroid nodules (77 benign, 96 malignant) in 157 patients were included in this study. Receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were performed to assess the diagnostic performance of conventional ultrasound (US) and ARFI imaging in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC).

[Preliminary study of the inhibitory effect and mechanism of B16F10-ESAT-6-gpi/IL-21 vaccine on the pulmonary metastasis in mouse models of melanoma].

Objective: To investigate the effect and mechanism of B16F10-ESAT-6-gpi/IL-21 tumor cell vaccine on pulmonary metastasis in mouse model of melanoma.

Methods: Twelve 8-week old female C57BL/6 mice were used in this study. The mice were injected with wild-type B16F10 cells through tail vein after immunization with B16F10-ESAT-6-gpi/IL-21 tumor cell vaccine, and the pulmonary metastasis was observed.

[Research progress in cytoplasmic PML gene functions].

The promyelocytic leukemia (PML) was originally identified and named as acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) . The PML, encoded by PML gene, locates in the nuclear body (NB) and shuttles in the cell nucleus-cytoplasm, so that PML completes many regulation functions. There are many research on the function of nuclear PML, but in recent years the foreign data indicate that cytoplasmic PML gene plays an important role in hematologic malignancies and solid tumors.

Molecular characterization of a novel thermal stable reductase capable of decoloration of both azo and triphenylmethane dyes.

The gene encoding a putative triphenylmethane reductase (TMR)-like protein derived from Geobacillus thermoglucosidasius C56-Y593 (named as GtAZR) was synthesized, heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli, and extensively characterized for the first time. The recombinant GtAZR displayed its maximum activity at pH 5.5 and 40 °C.

Expression of small glutamine-rich TPR-containing protein A (SGTA) in Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas promotes tumor proliferation and reverses cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR).

The expression and biologic function of SGTA in Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL) was investigated in this study. Clinically, by immunohistochemistry analysis we detected SGTA expression in both reactive lymphoid tissues and NHL tissues. In addition, we also correlated high expression of SGTA with poor prognosis.

Acoustic radiation force impulse elastography for efficacy evaluation after hepatocellular carcinoma radiofrequency ablation: a comparative study with contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

Aim: To explore acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography in assessing residual tumors of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

Materials And Methods: There were 83 HCC lesions among 72 patients. All patients were examined with ARFI, contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), and CT or MRI.

Methods: Stool samples were screened for the presence of CRE in a Chinese university hospital.

Background: HER-2 overexpression is an independent predictor for poor prognosis of breast cancer patients. Recently, extracellular domain of HER-2 (ECD) was found detectable in the serum of breast cancer patients. In this prospective study, we wonder whether ECD levels predict the clinical outcome of metastatic breast cancer patients.

Conventional US, US elasticity imaging, and acoustic radiation force impulse imaging for prediction of malignancy in thyroid nodules.

Purpose: To evaluate conventional ultrasonography (US), US elasticity imaging (EI), and acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging in thyroid nodule malignancy prediction.

Materials And Methods: This prospective study was institutional review board approved; informed consent was obtained. Study included 375 patients (mean age, 51 years; range, 18-75 years) with 441 pathologically proven thyroid nodules.

Virtual touch tissue imaging on acoustic radiation force impulse elastography: a new technique for differential diagnosis between benign and malignant thyroid nodules.

Objectives- Acoustic radiation force impulse elastography is a newly developed ultrasound elasticity imaging technique that included both Virtual Touch tissue quantification and Virtual Touch tissue imaging (VTI; Siemens Medical Solutions, Mountain View, CA). This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of VTI in differentiating malignant from benign thyroid nodules. Methods- This study included 192 consecutive patients with thyroid nodules (n = 219) who underwent surgery for compressive symptoms or suspicion of malignancy.

Prokinetic effects of mirtazapine on gastrointestinal transit.

Mirtazapine is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of mirtazapine on gastrointestinal motility in dogs, including solid gastric emptying, antral and small intestinal contractions, and small intestinal and colonic transit. Six dogs were implanted with two cannulas located at the duodenum and the ascending colon; another six dogs were implanted with gastric cannula 6 cm proximal to the pylorus.
