Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM) is linked to various respiratory outcomes. However, the associations of concentrations of PM-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PM-bound PAHs) with airway inflammatory indices remains unclear. To assess effects of short-term exposure to PM-bound PAHs on fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), we conducted a pilot study with repeated measures.

Sustained visual attention is a well-studied cognitive capacity that is relevant to many developmental outcomes. The development of visual attention is often construed as an increased capacity to exert top-down internal control. We demonstrate that sustained visual attention, measured in terms of momentary eye gaze, emerges from and is tightly tied to sensory-motor coordination.

Background: Previous studies have reported that extreme low and high hemoglobin levels are positively associated with the risk of ischemic stroke. However, there are few reports on the relationship between hemoglobin at acute phase and clinical outcomes after ischemic stroke and the results of their association to date are inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the association between them in a large prospective cohort of ischemic stroke patients.

Young children's visual environments are dynamic, changing moment-by-moment as children physically and visually explore spaces and objects and interact with people around them. Head-mounted eye tracking offers a unique opportunity to capture children's dynamic egocentric views and how they allocate visual attention within those views. This protocol provides guiding principles and practical recommendations for researchers using head-mounted eye trackers in both laboratory and more naturalistic settings.

Palatable foods (fat and sweet) induce hyperphagia, and facilitate the development of obesity. Whether and how overnutrition increases appetite through the adipose-to-brain axis is unclear. O-linked beta-D-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) transferase (OGT) couples nutrient cues to O-GlcNAcylation of intracellular proteins at serine/threonine residues.

The effects of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and Tween 80 addition on the structural, physical, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the pullulan-based edible films were investigated in this study. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of CEO in pullulan-based composite films decreased their tensile strength, transparency, water content and water vapor permeability, but considerably increased the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The films with 12% CEO exhibited the strongest antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities.

Ischemic stroke is one of the main causes of death and disablement globally. The NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is established as a sensor of detecting cellular damage and modulating inflammatory responses to injury during the progress of ischemic stroke. Inhibiting or blocking the NLRP3 inflammasome at different stages, including expression, assembly, and secretion, may have great promise to improve the neurological deficits during ischemic stroke.

Risk assessment for tunnel portals in the construction stage has been widely recognized as one of the most critical phases in tunnel construction as it easily causes accident than the overall length of a tunnel. However, the risk in tunnel portal construction is complicated and uncertain which has made such a neural network very attractive to the construction projects. This paper presents a risk evaluation model, which is obtained from historical data of 50 tunnels, by combining the fuzzy method and BP neural network.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates China's water footprint and virtual water trade from 1995 to 2009, focusing on three types of water: Green, Blue, and Grey.
  • Findings reveal that China increased its global water footprint from 11.2% in 1995 to 13.6% in 2009, primarily exporting and importing green virtual water, mainly trading with countries like the USA, India, and Brazil.
  • The analysis suggests that China maintains a stable global virtual water trade network impacted by trade relations and resource distribution, with recommendations for enhancing sustainable water management practices.

Complications from metastasis are responsible for the majority of cancer-related deaths. Despite the outsized medical impact of metastasis, remarkably little is known about one of the key early steps of metastasis: departure of a tumor cell from its originating tissue. It is well documented that cellular delamination in the basal direction can induce invasive behaviors, but it remains unknown if apical cell delamination can induce migration and invasion in a cancer context.

The zero-markup drug policy is an important component of the new round of Chinese health care reform that began in 2009 to promote the separation between medical and pharmaceutical services, reduce patients' medical burden, and improve the medical supply security system. Over the past 8 years, the zero-markup drug reform policy has been carried out in 4 pilot rounds (a policy diffusion model with Chinese characteristics) and has been promoted throughout the mainland China. At this critical point, it is necessary to review this policy systematically.

Stenting coronary artery bifurcation lesion is associated with suboptimal clinical results. Clinical improvement by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guided bifurcation stenting is controversial because small-side-branch (SB), low-risk patients and false bifurcations were included in previous studies that had no exact IVUS criteria for optimal stent expansion. We sought determine whether IVUS guidance is superior to angiography guidance for patients with true and complex bifurcation lesions.
