Although aqueous organic redox flow battery (RFBs) is a highly promising energy storage device, the redox reaction kinetics of the anode organic electrolyte material, especially for phenazine derivatives, are limited by low electrochemical activity of traditional porous carbon electrodes. Herein, Co/NC composite electrocatalyst was elaborated to significantly enhance the redox reaction kinetics of phenazine derivatives, in which Co/NC electrocatalyst could improve energy efficiency of aqueous phenazine RFBs by 43.2 % compared to pure carbon felt electrodes at current density of 100 mA/cm.

Cancer incidence and mortality differ among individuals of different ages, but the functional consequences of genetic alterations remain largely unknown. We systematically characterized genetic alterations within protein domains stratified by affected individual's age and showed that the mutational effects on domains varied with age. We further identified potential age-associated driver genes with hotspots across 33 cancers.

Background: Radiotherapy is a major modality for esophageal cancer (ESCA) treatment, yet radioresistance severely hampers its therapeutic efficacy. Ubiquitin-specific peptidase 14 (USP14) is a novel deubiquitinase and can mediate cancer cells' response to irradiation, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear, including in ESCA.

Methods: To evaluate the expression of USP14 in ESCA tissues or cells, we used RNA-Seq, immunoblotting, co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP), ubiquitination, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and immunofluorescence assays in this investigation.

Citron (Citrus medica) is a representative aromatic species of the Citrus genus in the Rutaceae family. To determine the volatile profiles and genetic variation of citron, we collected 218 citron accessions within China, including 130 from Yunnan and 88 from Tibet. We identified a total of 80 volatile compounds from their pericarps.

Persulfates-based advanced oxidation processes are highly efficient in degrading refractory organic contaminants in wastewater. However, their practical application is often limited by the extensive consumption of catalysts and oxidants. Therefore, constructing catalysts with abundant and efficient reaction interfaces is essential for improving the efficiency of persulfate activation.

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is an aggressive subtype of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) characterized by its T-follicular helper (TFH) phenotype. Relapsed and refractory disease is common in AITL and often associated with a poor prognosis. The presence of epigenetic abnormalities, immune dysregulation, hyperinflammation and active angiogenesis in AITL offers potential targets for histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs).

Janus kinase (JAK), a class of non-receptor tyrosine kinases, are essential in modulating the cytokine signaling cascade of cytokines associated with immune responses. Despite their potential in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, JAK inhibitors are associated with safety concerns, regarding cytokine suppression and significant side effects. Tyrosine kinase 2 (TYK2), a prominent member of the JAK family, is central to the signaling of interleukins (ILs) and interferons (IFNs), such as IL-12, IL-23 and IFNs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the use of transseptal sheaths (TSS) for atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation, aiming to prevent thromboembolism through a simple saline flush management technique.
  • In the retrospective study involving over 4,700 AF patients, complications were low, with no acute strokes, and only a few thromboembolic issues occurring post-procedure.
  • The prospective study showed no thrombus formation in 127 procedures using high concentration heparinized saline, demonstrating that this method is both safe and effective for preventing thrombus during AF radiofrequency ablation.

Purpose: Hospitalization is most common for severe pertussis cases and those with serious complications caused by pertussis. In mainland China, the immunization program consists of primary vaccinations at 3, 4, and 5 months, followed by a booster at 18 months with DTaP. It remains uncertain whether the first dose at 3 months, rather than 6 weeks as WHO recommended, may increase disease burden, as delayed immunization may lead to lagged protection.

The mechanism underlying chronic hypoxia (CH)-induced pulmonary venous remodeling remains unclear. Cell proliferation is key in vascular remodeling, and the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) protein contributes to CH-induced pulmonary venous smooth muscle cell (PVSMC) proliferation. In pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells, CaSR and transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) proteins interact, contributing to CH-induced cell proliferation via CaSR-TRPC1/6 signaling.

Pneumococcal disease (PD) caused by () continues to be a global public health concern. Monitoring the prevalence and shift of serotypes causing PD is critical for vaccination and local policies for PD management. A systematic review of published work on pneumococcal serotype distribution in the Chinese Mainland from January 1997 to July 2023 was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • Drospirenone (DROP) is a new progestin that effectively reduces estrogen-related sodium retention and positively impacts premenstrual syndrome (PMS), but it has low bioavailability due to poor water solubility and chemical instability.
  • Researchers developed a two-step delivery system involving a liposome complex that achieves an 878-fold increase in solubility with an encapsulation efficiency of 84.9%.
  • The drospirenone liposome complex was further stabilized using a cellulose-based hydrogel, allowing for uniform loading and significant drug delivery potential, with 0.5 g of hydrogel capable of holding 96.48 mg of drospirenone.

Background: Elevated evidence suggests that KIF20A plays an important role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism by which KIF20A promotes HCC cell growth are not well understood.

Methods: Using TCGA-LIHC RNAseq and GEO datasets, we assessed the KIF20A expression and patient survival in HCC and hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), a newly discovered intestinal coronavirus, has rapidly spread among pigs worldwide and has shown the potential for cross-species infection. However, the interaction mechanism between PDCoV and the host's antiviral response is still poorly understood. In this study, an E3 ubiquitin ligase FBXW8 was explored on PDCoV proliferation.

Increasing scRNA-seq data in cardiovascular research have substantially improved our knowledge on the development of the cardiovascular system and the mechanisms underlying cardiovascular diseases. However, the single-cell transcriptome datasets were dispersed in literature and no resource for cardiovascular systems and diseases. Here, we constructed an organized resource CardioAtlas, which provides comprehensive analysis results for > 1,929,000 cells in 27 human data sets and > 1,088,000 cells in 39 mouse data sets.

Background: The resurgence of pertussis in China underscores the urgency of active surveillance to complement the passive surveillance system.

Methods: Active surveillance for pertussis was conducted from 1 June 2021 to 31 May 2022, at Yiwu, Zhejiang province of China. Patients with suspected pertussis were further confirmed as pertussis cases by PCR and culture.

Small molecules that possess the ability to regulate the interactions between Son of Sevenless 1 (SOS1) and Kristen rat sarcoma (KRAS) offer immense potential in the realm of cancer therapy. In this study, we present a novel series of SOS1 inhibitors featuring a tricyclic quinazoline scaffold. Notably, we have identified compound 8d, which demonstrates the highest potency with an IC value of 5.

This study developed an intelligent method for identifying and quantifying water pollution sources in estuarine areas. It characterized the excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra from seven end-members, including seawater, rainwater, and five pollution sources typical of these areas. A deep learning model was established to identify and quantify these pollution sources in mixed water bodies.
