Flow synthesis is becoming increasingly relevant as a sustainable and safe alternative to traditional batch processes, as reaction conditions that are not usually achievable in batch chemistry can be exploited (for example, higher temperatures and pressures). Telescoped continuous reactions have the potential to reduce waste by decreasing the number of separate unit operations (e.g.

The application of microbial inoculants holds promise for the sustainable restoration of abandoned mine sites by affecting soil nutrients and microbial communities. However, the responses of plant microbial communities to microbial inoculants in mine restoration remain largely unknown. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted a 4-year field experiment at an abandoned carbonate mine site to assess the impacts of microbial inoculants on the soil-plant microbiome.

Despite evidence in previous literature regarding vaccine safety, more data were needed as concerns about COVID-19 vaccines were raised, particularly regarding their effects on female fertility, exacerbated by the widespread dissemination of information without scientific evidence. This study aims to answer the question: does COVID-19 vaccination have any impact on female fertility at a population level. In this ecological study, vaccination rates against COVID-19 and birth rates in 100 different countries were correlated.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compared the effectiveness of positron emission tomography (PET) combined with computed tomography (CT) versus CT alone for staging colorectal cancer (CRC) in nodal involvement and distant metastasis before treatment.
  • - Results indicated that PET/CT had higher sensitivity in detecting both lymph node involvement (66.7% vs. 55.2%) and distant metastases (82.5% vs. 53.6%) compared to CT alone.
  • - The findings suggest that PET/CT is a more accurate staging tool for CRC, making it valuable for treatment planning and potentially improving patient outcomes.

Background: Depression and anxiety are significant health burdens that greatly impact the quality of life of refugees and migrants. In this study, we have translated and culturally adapted the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Screener (GAD-7) into Kinyarwanda and performed a validation study in a United States (US) primary care setting.

Methods: A committee of seven experts including psychiatric and family medicine providers, health researchers, and trained medical interpreters translated and culturally adapted the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and incorporated feedback from cognitive interviews with bilingual participants.

Despite the essential role of nitrogen fertilizers in achieving high crop yields, current application practices often exhibit low efficiency. Optimizing nitrogen (N) fertilization in agriculture is, therefore, critical for enhancing crop productivity while ensuring sustainable food production. This study investigates the effects of nitrification inhibitors (Nis) such as Dimethyl Pyrazole Phosphate (DMPP) and Dimethyl Pyrazole Fulvic Acid (DMPFA), plant growth-promoting bacteria inoculation, and phosphorus (P) application on the soil-plant-microbe system in maize.

Unlabelled: Within a species, larger individuals often have shorter lives and higher rates of age-related disease. Despite this well-known link, we still know little about underlying age-related epigenetic differences, which could help us better understand inter-individual variation in aging and the etiology, onset, and progression of age-associated disease. Dogs exhibit this negative correlation between size, health, and longevity and thus represent an excellent system in which to test the underlying mechanisms.

Introduction: Stallion castration is a standard procedure with a risk of post-surgical complications. Castration induces an acute phase response (APR). Serum Amyloid-A (SAA) is a well-studied major acute phase protein (APP), that has been shown to be a good marker for the development of post-surgical complications.

Article Synopsis
  • Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Ethiopia, caused by the Leishmania aethiopica parasite, shows multiple clinical forms that are not linked to genetic differences in the parasite's genome or variations in immune system responses among patients.
  • A study analyzed genetic data from 48 parasite isolates and immune signatures from 129 CL patients, finding no significant associations between the genetic variants or immune markers and the different clinical presentations of CL.
  • The research concluded that while there were some differences in chemokines when comparing CL patients to healthy controls, the overall immune response did not significantly vary between the clinical forms of CL.

Background: Although adequate physical activity has been shown to be beneficial in early breast cancer, evidence in metastatic breast cancer is sparse and contradictory, which could be related to distinct effects of physical activity on the different molecular cancer subtypes. Therefore, we here evaluated the effect of physical activity on progression-free and overall survival (PFS, OS) in metastatic breast cancer, specifically looking at molecular subtypes.

Methods: International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) questionnaires, filled out by patients enrolled in the prospective PRAEGNANT registry (NCT02338167; n = 1,270) were used to calculate metabolic equivalent task (MET) minutes, which were subsequently categorized into low (n = 138), moderate (n = 995) or high IPAQ categories (n = 137).

Among the common strategies to design next-generation COVID-19 vaccines is broadening the antigenic repertoire thereby aiming to increase efficacy against emerging variants of concern (VoC). This study describes a new Orf virus-based vector (ORFV) platform to design a multiantigenic vaccine targeting SARS-CoV-2 spike and nucleocapsid antigens. Vaccine candidates were engineered, either expressing spike protein (ORFV-S) alone or co-expressing nucleocapsid protein (ORFV-S/N).

Background: Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) are valuable tools to evaluate patient-centredness (PC) from the patients' perspective. Despite their utility, a comprehensive PREM addressing PC has been lacking. To bridge this gap, we developed the preliminary version of the Experienced Patient-Centeredness Questionnaire (EPAT), a disease-generic tool based on the integrative model of PC comprising 16 dimensions.

The cellular nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) pathway recognizes and degrades mRNAs with unusual structural features, such as long 3' UTRs or overlapping reading frames, and therefore serves as a transcript quality control mechanism. A broad spectrum of today's knowledge about the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway has been discovered using NMD reporter systems, mostly consisting of multiple exons, with a wild-type and a premature termination codon-containing variant. In a preliminary NMD study, we used the seven-exon triose phosphate isomerase (TPI) reporter and observed that in this well-known NMD reporter, surprisingly, not all splice sites are used constitutively, but additional cryptic splice sites are used.
