Background: People with diabetes are at an increased risk of contracting the hepatitis B virus (HBV). However, hepatitis B (HepB) vaccination rates among adults with diabetes are low. Factors influencing HepB vaccination have not been adequately explored.

Multicenter Normative Data for Mesopic Microperimetry.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide a large, multi-center normative dataset for the Macular Integrity Assessment (MAIA) microperimeter and compare the goodness-of-fit and prediction interval calibration-error for a panel of hill-of-vision models.

Methods: Microperimetry examinations of healthy eyes from five independent study groups and one previously available dataset were included (1137 tests from 531 eyes of 432 participants [223 women and 209 men]). Linear mixed models (LMMs) were fitted to the data to obtain interpretable hill-of-vision models.

Nutritional value and environmental aspects of high-protein ultra-processed foods on the German market.

Objective: To compare nutritional value and aspects with environmental impact of high-protein (HP) and 'normal-protein' (NP) ultra-processed foods (UPF).

Design: 299 HP and 286 NP products were evaluated regarding aspects of nutritional value, energy density, Nutri-Score, number of additives as well as hyper-palatability and price. Environmental impact of HP UPF was addressed by analysing protein sources and the use of environmentally persistent non-nutritive artificial sweeteners.

The application of microbial inoculants holds promise for the sustainable restoration of abandoned mine sites by affecting soil nutrients and microbial communities. However, the responses of plant microbial communities to microbial inoculants in mine restoration remain largely unknown. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted a 4-year field experiment at an abandoned carbonate mine site to assess the impacts of microbial inoculants on the soil-plant microbiome.

Impact of COVID-19 Vaccination on Female Fertility.

Despite evidence in previous literature regarding vaccine safety, more data were needed as concerns about COVID-19 vaccines were raised, particularly regarding their effects on female fertility, exacerbated by the widespread dissemination of information without scientific evidence. This study aims to answer the question: does COVID-19 vaccination have any impact on female fertility at a population level. In this ecological study, vaccination rates against COVID-19 and birth rates in 100 different countries were correlated.

The Role of GERD Diagnosis and Treatment in Preventing Lung Function Decline After Pediatric Lung Transplantation.

Background/purpose:  Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) after lung transplantation (LuTx) can lead to chronic lung allograft dysfunction. Our aim was to assess the prevalence of GERD in pediatric LuTx recipients and to investigate the impact of medical and surgical GERD treatment on lung function.

Methods:  Ethical approval was obtained.

Background: Depression and anxiety are significant health burdens that greatly impact the quality of life of refugees and migrants. In this study, we have translated and culturally adapted the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Screener (GAD-7) into Kinyarwanda and performed a validation study in a United States (US) primary care setting.

Methods: A committee of seven experts including psychiatric and family medicine providers, health researchers, and trained medical interpreters translated and culturally adapted the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and incorporated feedback from cognitive interviews with bilingual participants.

Despite the essential role of nitrogen fertilizers in achieving high crop yields, current application practices often exhibit low efficiency. Despite this well-known link, we still know little about underlying age-related epigenetic differences, which could help us better understand inter-individual variation in aging and the etiology, onset, and progression of age-associated disease. Dogs exhibit this negative correlation between size, health, and longevity and thus represent an excellent system in which to test the underlying mechanisms.

The impact of physical activity on progression-free and overall survival in metastatic breast cancer based on molecular subtype.

Background: Although adequate physical activity has been shown to be beneficial in early breast cancer, evidence in metastatic breast cancer is sparse and contradictory, which could be related to distinct effects of physical activity on the different molecular cancer subtypes. Therefore, we here evaluated the effect of physical activity on progression-free and overall survival (PFS, OS) in metastatic breast cancer, specifically looking at molecular subtypes.

Methods: International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) questionnaires, filled out by patients enrolled in the prospective PRAEGNANT registry (NCT02338167; n = 1,270) were used to calculate metabolic equivalent task (MET) minutes, which were subsequently categorized into low (n = 138), moderate (n = 995) or high IPAQ categories (n = 137).

A multiantigenic Orf virus-based vaccine efficiently protects hamsters and nonhuman primates against SARS-CoV-2.

Among the common strategies to design next-generation COVID-19 vaccines is broadening the antigenic repertoire thereby aiming to increase efficacy against emerging variants of concern (VoC). This study describes a new Orf virus-based vector (ORFV) platform to design a multiantigenic vaccine targeting SARS-CoV-2 spike and nucleocapsid antigens. Vaccine candidates were engineered, either expressing spike protein (ORFV-S) alone or co-expressing nucleocapsid protein (ORFV-S/N).

Trans-arterial embolization for treatment of acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding-a multicenter analysis.

Purpose: To assess the technical feasibility, safety, and clinical success rate of trans-arterial embolization (TAE) as an emergency treatment for acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB).

Materials And Methods: Consecutive patients who received urgent TAE due to active LGIB at five academic centers in Germany were retrospectively analyzed. LGIB was confirmed and localized using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) or endoscopy.

Bioinformatics-driven refinement of the commonly used TPI nonsense-mediated decay reporter system.

The cellular nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) pathway recognizes and degrades mRNAs with unusual structural features, such as long 3' UTRs or overlapping reading frames, and therefore serves as a transcript quality control mechanism. A broad spectrum of today's knowledge about the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway has been discovered using NMD reporter systems, mostly consisting of multiple exons, with a wild-type and a premature termination codon-containing variant. In a preliminary NMD study, we used the seven-exon triose phosphate isomerase (TPI) reporter and observed that in this well-known NMD reporter, surprisingly, not all splice sites are used constitutively, but additional cryptic splice sites are used.

Exergaming interventions for older adults: The effect of game characteristics on gameplay.

Purpose: Exergames can be used to train physical and cognitive abilities and have been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of falls in older adults. However, there is limited evidence about how people play exergames and how gameplay is affected by game settings and, thus, the potential training effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of repeated exergaming sessions over 4 weeks and two game settings (difficulty level and game speed) on gameplay (performance, physical activity and perceived exertion) in older adults over a four-week exergaming intervention.

Participant-reported neurological events following immunization in the Canadian National Vaccine Safety Network-COVID-19 vaccine (CANVAS-COVID) study.

Introduction: The Canadian National Vaccine Safety Network (CANVAS) conducted active participant-based surveillance for adverse events following immunization during the COVID-19 vaccine campaign. This study evaluated the association between COVID-19 vaccination and neurological adverse events.

Methods: Participants were invited to complete online surveys to report health events that prevented daily activities and/or required medical attention within 7 days after COVID-19 vaccination or 7 days prior to the survey (unvaccinated controls); follow-up surveys were sent 7 months later.
