Toxoplasma gondii is a successful parasite capable of infecting a wide range of warm-blooded animals, including people, livestock, and wildlife. In individuals with intact immune function, T. gondii can invade the host brain tissue by altering the blood-brain barrier permeability, leading to chronic infection.

Background: The interplay between Toxoplasma gondii infection and tumor development is intriguing and not yet fully understood. Some studies showed that T. gondii reversed tumor immune suppression, while some reported the opposite, stating that T.

Background: () is a significant protozoan pathogen among food animals. Despite the threat to public health by infections, there's limited understanding of its seroprevalence and trends in food animals across mainland China. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of infections among swine, sheep, goats, chickens, and cattle in mainland China from 2010 to 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • EIF5A is significantly upregulated in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and is linked to tumor progression, but its mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • The study utilized multiple methods including qRT-PCR, western blot, and bioinformatics analyses to evaluate EIF5A expression and its role in immune infiltration and cellular processes.
  • Findings suggest that EIF5A influences the cell cycle and apoptosis through the cAMP signaling pathway, positioning it as a potential prognostic biomarker for LUAD.

Article Synopsis
  • The masked palm civet is a known carrier of pathogens affecting humans, specifically focusing on its chronic infection with ME49, which has not been previously studied in detail.
  • Researchers identified 268 differentially expressed proteins in the brain tissue of these civets, revealing notable changes in their expression levels and associated pathways linked to cancer and immune response.
  • Out of 24 genes that showed changes in both mRNA and protein levels, four proteins (REEP3, REEP4, TEP1, EEPD1) were highlighted for their potential role in cancer pathways, with certain proteins correlating to better prognosis in various cancer types.

Background: Private small-sized care homes (<50 beds)  have proliferated across China, however, until recently little was known about the characteristics of such institutions, and the challenges and the problems faced by their owners. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of small-sized, privately-owned care homes in the People's Republic of China; and to understand the motivation and challenges faced by their owners.

Methods: This study used an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach of qualitative research.

Since the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, pharmaceutical companies and researchers worldwide have worked hard to develop vaccines and drugs to end the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The potential pathogen responsible for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), SARS-CoV-2, belongs to a novel lineage of beta coronaviruses in the subgenus arbovirus. Antiviral drugs, convalescent plasma, monoclonal antibodies, and vaccines are effective treatments for SARS-CoV-2 and are beneficial in preventing infection.

Introduction: is a widespread protozoan with significant economic losses and public health importance. But so far, the protective effect of reported DNA-based vaccines fluctuates widely, and no study has demonstrated complete protection.

Areas Covered: This review provides an inclusive summary of DNA vaccine antigens, adjuvants, and some other parameters.

Background: , an intracellular protozoan parasite, exists in the host brain as cysts, which can result in Toxoplasmic Encephalitis (TE) and neurological diseases. However, few studies have been conducted on TE, particularly on how to prevent it. Previous proteomics studies have showed that the expression of C3 in rat brains was up-regulated after infection.

Article Synopsis
  • * After infecting the civets with the parasite and analyzing their brain tissue, a total of 2808 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, with significant alterations in cellular and metabolic processes.
  • * The findings highlighted important genes linked to immune response that could help develop new treatments and detection strategies for T. gondii infection in wild animals.

Background And Aims: Globally, two thirds of people with dementia are cared for by their families or friends. Family caregivers' coping strategies of managing the caregiving burden of dementia have been studied widely in western literature. However, few attempts have been made to explore the experience of family caregivers' coping strategies in China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the effectiveness and side effects of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) versus traditional anthracycline in neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer.
  • A total of 146 breast cancer patients were divided into an observation group (PLD) and a control group (traditional anthracycline), matched for factors like age and cancer subtype.
  • Results showed that the observation group had a higher pathologic complete response rate and fewer adverse cardiac events compared to the control group, suggesting PLD may be a safer and more effective option.

() infection in female mammals during pregnancy can result in poor pregnancy. Similarly, it can result in male reproductive disorders in male mammals. Although the testes and uterus have very different biological makeup, they are still both attacked by resulting in reproductive dysfunctions.

Aluminum (Al) toxicity limits plant growth and has a major impact on the agricultural productivity in acidic soils. The zinc-finger protein (ZFP) family plays multiple roles in plant development and abiotic stresses. Although previous reports have confirmed the function of these genes, their transcriptional mechanisms in wild soybean () are unclear.

Background: () is an obligate intracellular parasite, which can affect the pregnancy outcomes in infected females by damaging the uterus, and the intrauterine environment as well as and the hypothalamus resulting in hormonal imbalance. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the parasite-induced poor pregnancy outcomes and the key genes regulating these mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the gene expression in the mouse's uterus following experimentally-induced acute infection with RH strain.

We theoretically and experimentally study the propagation properties of the circular Airy beam (CAB) with a Gaussian envelope in Fourier space. The two parameters of the Gaussian function can be used to control the distribution of the spatial frequency, and thus to tune the propagation properties of this modified CAB. When the two parameters are chosen appropriately, the size of focal spot will be reduced, the maximum focal intensity and especially the abruptly autofocusing property will be greatly enhanced.

Sprague Dawley rats and Kunming (KM) mice are artificially infected with type II Toxoplasma gondii strain Prugniaud (Pru) to generate toxoplasmosis, which is a fatal disease mediated by T. gondii invasion of the central nervous system (CNS) by unknown mechanisms. The aim is to explore the mechanism of differential susceptibility of mice and rats to T.

The monodisperse leaf-like CeO2 nanosheets of about 40 nm in thickness have been successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal route. SEM, XRD, FT-IR, TG-DSC, XPS, Raman scattering, Photoluminescence (PL) spectra and M-H curves were employed to characterize the samples. The results showed that all the CeO2 samples had a cubic fluorite structure and there are Ce3+ ions and oxygen vacancies in the surface of samples.

We previously demonstrated that the survival time of BALB/c mice challenged with Toxoplasma gondii RH strain was prolonged by immunising the mice with a eukaryotic vector expressing the protein ROP16 of T. gondii. Building upon previous findings, we are exploring improved vaccination strategies to enhance protection.
