Bacteraemia has attracted great attention owing to its serious outcomes, including deterioration of the primary disease, infection, severe sepsis, overwhelming septic shock or even death. Candidemia, secondary to bacteraemia, is frequently seen in hospitalised patients, especially in those with weak immune systems, and may lead to lethal outcomes and a poor prognosis. Moreover, higher morbidity and mortality associated with candidemia.

Background: Invasive candidiasis is a common cancer-related complication with a high fatality rate. If patients with a high risk of dying in the hospital are identified early and accurately, physicians can make better clinical judgments. However, epidemiological analyses and mortality prediction models of cancer patients with invasive candidiasis remain limited.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines a growing issue of invasive candidal and bacterial bloodstream infections in hospitalized patients, highlighting the limited data available for China.
  • It analyzes data from 246 patients treated between 2013 and 2018, focusing on demographic information, hospitalization duration, and common health indicators.
  • The findings reveal that significant predictors for mortality include age, serum creatinine level, and other clinical indicators, with Candida parapsilosis and Acinetobacter baumannii being the most frequent pathogens involved.

Article Synopsis
  • * A four-gene prognostic model involving BASP1-AS1 and others was developed using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas and validated with an external series.
  • * BASP1-AS1 promotes melanoma cell growth and spread by interacting with YBX1 to activate the Notch signaling pathway, leading to the expression of oncogenes that drive cancer progression.

This study is to determine the role of the fractional CO2 laser in topical drug delivery and the impact of local immune responses. Experimental rabbit nails were treated with fractionated CO2 laser at varied fluencies of 20 mJ, 25 mJ, and 30 mJ and half of which were coated with rhodamine B (RhB). Histological examination was performed by hematoxylin and eosin staining; the penetration of RhB was assessed by the use of confocal laser scanning microscopy; and the expressions of IFN-γ and IL-4 mRNA in situ were detected by means of qPCR at 12 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days post-laser irritation.

Vitiligo is associated with oxidant stress and α-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidative agent. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral ALA in combination with NB-UVB phototherapy on nonsegmental stable vitiligo. The prospective, multi-center, parallel controlled, double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted from 2012 to 2014, in seven comprehensive tertiary hospitals in China.

Invasive fungal infection (IFI) is one of the most common nosocomial infections. However, data on the epidemiology of IFI and susceptibility to antifungal agents in China are quite limited, and in particular, no current data exist on the microbiological, and clinical characteristics of IFI patients in Northeast China. The purpose of this study was to provide a retrospective review of the clinical characteristics, laboratory test results, and risk factor predictions of inpatients diagnosed with IFI.

Article Synopsis
  • Sarcomas are rare cancers, making up about 1% of solid tumors in adults, and consist of over 70 subtypes with varying characteristics.
  • Researchers analyzed RNA-seq data and clinical information to identify prognostic biomarkers in sarcomas, focusing on four pathological subtypes: dedifferentiated liposarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas, and myxofibrosarcoma.
  • The study found that the drug Tanespimycin inhibits the spread of leiomyosarcoma and could be a potential treatment, leading to new insights into sarcoma pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Background: Currently, effective genetic markers are limited to predict the clinical outcome of melanoma. High-throughput multiomics sequencing data have provided a valuable approach for the identification of genes associated with cancer prognosis.

Method: The multidimensional data of melanoma patients, including clinical, genomic, and transcriptomic data, were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).

Article Synopsis
  • - Candida albicans (C. albicans) is a fungal pathogen that affects humans and interacts with skin cells (keratinocytes) and immune cells (macrophages), but their relationship during colonization is not well understood.
  • - In the study, keratinocyte-conditioned medium from heat-inactivated C. albicans was used to stimulate macrophages, resulting in increased migration, phagocytosis, and proinflammatory cytokines (like TNF-a and IL-12), indicating M1 polarization of macrophages.
  • - The findings suggest that keratinocytes help recruit and activate macrophages against C. albicans by secreting TNF-a, which can be blocked by anti-TNF-a antibodies, highlighting an important aspect

Melanocyte loss in vitiligo vulgaris is believed to be an autoimmune process. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is involved in many autoimmune skin diseases. We determined the possible role of MIF in the pathogenesis of vitiligo vulgaris, and describe the relationship between MIF expressions and disease severity and activity.
