Objectives: Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) are prone to malnutrition, which leads to deterioration of health. This study is to clarify the effect of Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted home enteral nutrition (HEN) management mode on the health status of patients with stage III to stage IV NPC after 3 years of treatment, and to provide a new strategy for improving the quality of life of patients.

Methods: Patients with stage III ~ IV NPC were determined whether to accept AI-assisted HEN management according to voluntary principle.

Article Synopsis
  • Preterm infants are highly susceptible to iron deficiency, but understanding of their iron regulation is limited.
  • The research aimed to create a suitable animal model by inducing prematurity in piglets, allowing assessment of iron status similar to that of preterm human infants.
  • Findings showed that preterm piglets had lower body weight and plasma iron but higher tissue iron and levels of iron-regulatory hormones, indicating a unique pattern of iron metabolism that suggests functional iron deficiency and accumulation.

  • * The study investigated iron transfer efficiency across the placenta as a potential reason for the observed differences in iron status between wild boar and Polish Large White (PLW) piglets.
  • * Analysis revealed no major differences in iron transporter gene expression between the two species, but wild boar placentas showed higher levels of certain enzymes that aid in iron export to the fetus.

Delineating 3D blood vessels of various anatomical structures is essential for clinical diagnosis and treatment, however, is challenging due to complex structure variations and varied imaging conditions. Although recent supervised deep learning models have demonstrated their superior capacity in automatic 3D vessel segmentation, the reliance on expensive 3D manual annotations and limited capacity for annotation reuse among different vascular structures hinder their clinical applications. To avoid the repetitive and costly annotating process for each vascular structure and make full use of existing annotations, this paper proposes a novel 3D shape-guided local discrimination (3D-SLD) model for 3D vascular segmentation under limited guidance from public 2D vessel annotations.

Introduction: Intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) drugs have been widely used in patients with macular edema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO); however, recurrence is a major concern. This study aims to observe the clinical effects of atorvastatin and intravitreal therapy in the treatment of patients with branch or central RVO-ME and coexistent carotid plaques (CP).

Methods And Analysis: A prospective randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted.

Objective: To explore the correlation between clinical phenotypes and genotypes among 46 children with SCN1A-related developmental epileptic encephalopathy (DEE).

Methods: Clinical data of 46 children with DEE and SCN1A variants identified at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center between January 2018 and June 2022 were collected. The children were grouped based on their age of onset, clinical manifestations, neurodevelopmental status, and results of genetic testing.

Background: The critically low hepatic iron stores of newborn piglets are considered to be a major cause of neonatal iron deficiency in modern breeds of domestic pig (Sus domestica). The main factor believed to contribute to this phenomenon is large litter size, which has been an objective of selective breeding of pigs for decades. As consequence, iron transferred from the pregnant sow has to be distributed among a greater number of fetuses.

Article Synopsis
  • - This paper presents a new convolutional neural network framework designed to automatically segment renal structures like kidneys, tumors, arteries, and veins from CT images, enhancing surgical planning for renal cancer treatment.
  • - The method includes a Multi-Branch Dilated Convolutional Network (MBD-Net) and a Cyst Discriminator, which allows for better feature extraction and the ability to differentiate between tumors and cysts without needing labeled data.
  • - The framework achieved impressive performance metrics in a competitive challenge, with high Dice similarity coefficients, indicating its effectiveness in accurately parsing kidney-related structures in medical imaging.

Despite being the subject of multiple cancer studies, nothing is known about miR-597-5p's role in colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). We intend to explore how miR-597-5p influences the growth and development of CAC. In order to construct a CAC model, mice were stimulated with azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium (DSS).

Contrastive learning, which aims to capture general representation from unlabeled images to initialize the medical analysis models, has been proven effective in alleviating the high demand for expensive annotations. Current methods mainly focus on instance-wise comparisons to learn the global discriminative features, however, pretermitting the local details to distinguish tiny anatomical structures, lesions, and tissues. To address this challenge, in this paper, we propose a general unsupervised representation learning framework, named local discrimination (LD), to learn local discriminative features for medical images by closely embedding semantically similar pixels and identifying regions of similar structures across different images.
