Background: Spastic hemiplegia following ischemic strokes seriously impedes the recovery of motor function posing a vast rehabilitation challenge. As the uncertain effects of recommended conventional treatments such as botulinum toxin injections on active functional improvement and potential adverse effects cannot be bypassed, there is an increasing need in alternative, more effective and safer modalities. Acupoints-based transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (Acu-TENS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) are effective non-invasive modalities for stroke rehabilitation, particularly showing anti-spastic effect and functional improvements as well.

To evaluate the emission level and emission reduction potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the coating industry in Zibo, we conducted field research on eight typical enterprises in three representative coating industries:the automobile manufacturing coating industry, wooden furniture coating industry, and metal surface coating industry. The actual measurement method, material balance algorithm, and emission factor method were used to calculate the VOC emissions of enterprises, and the localized emission factors were established. The emission levels of enterprises were evaluated by comparing with other domestic and foreign studies including AP-42, and the emission reduction potential was calculated based on the material balance algorithm.

Synaptic dysfunction is an important pathological hallmark and cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD). High-frequency stimulation (HFS)-induced long-term potentiation (LTP) has been widely used to study synaptic plasticity, with impaired LTP found to be associated with AD. However, the exact molecular mechanism underlying synaptic plasticity has yet to be completely elucidated.

In recent years, ozone pollution has been growing increasingly serious in the urban areas of China. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors of O formation, which is of great significance to studying the main characteristics and sources of VOCs for controlling O pollution. In this study, we conducted online VOCs observation in Zibo City from May to September in 2019, monitoring 56 species in total.

In this study, we obtained monitoring data of O and its precursors (NO, VOCs, and CO), as well as meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and visibility), in 2019 to analyze the characteristics of O pollution and the influencing factors in urban and suburban areas. The results showed that the O episodes accounted for 25.8% of the whole observation period, mostly occurring from May to September.

Background: Recent studies have shown that the gut microbiota is closely related to the pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), but the causal nature is largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to assess the causal relationship between intestinal bacteria and IBD and to identify specific pathogenic bacterial taxa via the Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.

Materials And Methods: MR analysis was performed on genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of gut microbiota and IBD.

To study the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Zibo, nine key industries and their representative enterprises were selected to conduct a field investigation and measurement. The emitted VOC characteristics in different industries were analyzed. Based on measurement data, the emissions of VOCs from all monitored enterprises were calculated to obtain the localization emission factors.

Background: The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with sepsis is high, and the prognosis of patients with septic AKI is poor. The early diagnosis and treatment of septic AKI is of great significance in improving the prognosis of patients with sepsis.

Aim: To explore the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), serum creatinine (Scr), and other indicators in the early diagnosis of septic AKI.

DNA hydrogels are biocompatible and are suitable for many biomedical applications. However, to be useful imaging probes or drug carriers, the ordinary bulk size of DNA hydrogels must be overcome. Here we put forward a new strategy for fabricating a novel and simple protein-scaffolded DNA nanohydrogel, constructed through a direct DNA self-assembly using three types of streptavidin (SA)-based DNA tetrad for the activation of imaging and targeting therapy of cancer cells.

Ground-level ozone (O) pollution is a serious problem in major cities in China. The control of its precursors, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is a key to limiting ozone production. The ozone formation potential of VOCs in an industrial park in Tianjin was studied by collecting gas samples at the factory boundaries of six representative enterprises.

Five highly stable coordination polymers assembled by 2-(2-carboxyphenyl)imidazo(4,5-f)-(1,10)phenanthroline (2-HNCP) and different aromatic carboxylic acid ligands, namely, [Pb(2-NCP)(L1)]n (1), [Pb2(2-NCP)2(L2)]n·2nH2O (2), [Pb2(2-NCP)2(L2)]n (3), [Pb(2-NCP)(L3)0.5]n (4) and [Pb2(2-NCP)2(L4)]n (5), where HL1 = pyridine-4-carboxylic acid, H2L2 = 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, H2L3 = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and H2L4 = 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses and infrared spectroscopy.

In the present study, aiming to identify loci associated with osteoporosis, we conducted a joint association study of 2 independent genome-wide association meta-analyses of femoral neck and lumbar spine bone mineral densities (BMDs): 1) an in-house study of 6 samples involving 7484 subjects, and 2) the GEFOS-seq study of 7 samples involving 32,965 subjects. The in-house samples were imputed by the 1000 genomes project phase 3 reference panel. SNP-based association test was applied to 7,998,108 autosomal SNPs in each meta-analysis, and for each SNP the 2 association signals were then combined for joint analysis and for mutual replication.

Hepatic fibrosis is a common middle stage of the pathological processes of chronic liver diseases. Clinical intervention during the early stages of hepatic fibrosis can slow the development of liver cirrhosis and reduce the risk of developing liver cancer. Performing a liver biopsy, the gold standard for viral liver disease management, has drawbacks such as invasiveness and a relatively high sampling error rate.

Aim: To analyze the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in a population that underwent health checkups and had high serum miR-106b levels.

Methods: A total of 335 subjects who underwent checkups in the Digestive and Liver Disease Department of our hospital were randomly selected. RT-PCR was used to detect the level of miR-106b in serum samples.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on identifying genomic variants linked to osteoporosis by conducting a meta-analysis of bone mineral density (BMD) across multiple samples, totaling 7,175 subjects.
  • Two novel genetic loci associated with BMD were discovered: 1q43 and 2q32.2, with specific SNPs tied to genes involved in bone development.
  • Additionally, three previously known loci were replicated, contributing to a deeper understanding of the genetic factors influencing osteoporosis and bone health.

Background: The prognosis and management of hepatic fibrosis are closely related to the stage of the disease. The limitations of liver biopsy, which is the gold standard for treatment, include its invasiveness and sampling error. Ultrasound elasticity might be the most promising imaging technology for the noninvasive and accurate assessment of hepatic fibrosis.

In order to understand the indoor air pollution of volatile organic compounds in furniture mall and to perform health risk assessment of chronic exposure to its workers, in this study, the air samples in a furniture mall in Tianjin were sampled in summer (June) and autumn (October) in 2011 and 2012, and the compositions of VOCs were investigated by using the method of reconcentration-GC-MS. The results showed that the indoor concentration of total pollutants was about 1.9 times higher than that of outdoor; the characterized odorous substances were dichloromethane, toluene, and alpha-pinene; aromatic compounds and halogenated alkane were detected in large amounts in furniture mall, and terpenes also occupied a certain proportion.
