The biosynthesis of mupirocin, a clinically significant antibiotic produced by sp. NCIMB 10586, is activated by the -acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) MupR/I quorum sensing (QS) system. However, to date, limited research has focused on the influence of global regulators such as the GacS/A two-component system (TCS) on the MupR/I QS system or mupirocin biosynthesis.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

Photoporation with free photothermal nanoparticles (NPs) is a promising technology for gentle delivery of functional biomacromolecules into living cells, offering great flexibility in terms of cell types and payload molecules. However, the translational use of photoporation, such as for transfecting patient-derived cells for cell therapies, is hampered by safety and regulatory concerns as it relies on direct contact between cells and photothermal NPs. A solution is to embed the photothermal NPs in electrospun nanofibers, which form a substrate for cell culture.

With the discovery of colossal magnetoresistance materials and high-temperature superconductors, Mott insulators can potentially undergo a transition from insulating state to metallic state. Here, in molecular ferroelectrics system, a Mott insulator of (CHN)VO has been first synthesized, which is a 2D organic-inorganic ferroelectric with composition of layered vanadium oxide and quinuclidine ring. Interestingly, accompanied by the ferroelectric phase transition, (CHN)VO changes sharply in conductivity.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is prone to metastasis and is a leading cause of mortality. The cytoskeleton is closely related to cell morphology and movement; however, little research has been conducted on ESCC metastasis. In this study, we found that the anchoring filament protein ladinin 1 (LAD1) specifically binds to LINC01305 for co-regulating the level of modulating cortactin proteins (CTTN) and neuronal Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) phosphorylation, which mediates cytoskeletal reorganization and affects the metastasis of ESCC cells.

Superlattices are significant means to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials and optimize their performance. In this work, using high-precision first-principles based neural network potentials combined with non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and the phonon Boltzmann transport equation, the lattice thermal conductivities of BiTe monolayer and lateral BiTe/SbTe monolayer superlattices are thoroughly investigated. As the period length increases, the thermal conductivity shows a trend of an initial decrease followed by an increase, which aligns with conventional observations.

The interfacial molecular dipole enhances the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by facilitating improved charge extraction. However, conventional self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) face challenges like inadequate interface coverage and weak dipole interactions. Herein, we develop a strategy using a self-assembled ferroelectric layer to modify the interfacial properties of PSCs.

Human hearing cannot sensitively detect sounds below 100 Hz, which can affect the physical well-being and lead to dizziness, headaches, and nausea. Piezoelectric acoustic sensors still lack sensitivity to low-frequency sounds owing to the low piezoelectric coefficient or high elastic modulus of materials. The low elastic modulus and substantial piezoelectric coefficient of molecular ferroelectric materials make them excellent candidates for acoustic sensors.

The domestication of ducks represents a pivotal evolutionary shift from the unguided propagation of wild species to deliberate human-mediated selection, culminating in distinct behavioural, morphological, and physiological traits that differentiate domesticated ducks from their wild counterparts. This transition has yielded breeds with traits fine-tuned to specific economic roles, such as egg production, meat yield, or dual-purpose functionality. Duck domestication plays a significant role in poultry production globally, meeting the growing demand for eggs and meat in various regions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between insomnia disorder (ID) and glymphatic circulation, utilizing dynamic synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (syMRI) on 32 insomnia patients and 10 healthy volunteers.
  • Results showed significant differences in T1 signal values in several brain areas, including the insula gray matter and hippocampal gray matter, between insomnia patients and the control group at various time points.
  • Statistical analyses indicated that time-varying T1 values in cerebral gray matter and the putamen also differed significantly between groups, suggesting potential glymphatic system involvement in insomnia.

Prescription opioids after surgery may pose a risk if left unused. However, prescribers rely on their best judgement in determining how much their patients need, often resulting in over-prescription of these medications. Opioid disposal is a strategy to reduce the risk of persistent use or misuse of opioids.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers have developed glucose-responsive insulin release systems, using chitosan-based three-compartment microspheres (TCMs) to achieve prolonged insulin delivery.
  • The TCMs release insulin based on blood glucose levels, as glucose generates gluconic acid, which degrades chitosan and triggers insulin release from compartments with varying concentrations.
  • In tests, TCMs showed longer-lasting insulin release and effective blood glucose regulation in diabetic cell models, demonstrating promising potential for diabetes treatment and insulin research.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the suitable surgical strategies for applying TaBw01 porous tantalum rod across different stages of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH).

Methods: TaBw01 tantalum rods were fabricated using type FTaY-1 tantalum powder via the foam impregnation-sintering method. Mechanical testing with the Instron 8801 universal testing machine and finite element analysis (FEA) assessed single tantalum rod implantation and impaction bone grafting combined with rod implantation.

Porcine parvovirus disease is a reproductive disorder caused by the porcine parvovirus (PPV) in sows and is characterised by miscarriage, stillbirth and mummification in pregnant sows. Porcine parvovirus disease poses a significant threat to pork herds and seriously hinders healthy and sustainable development of the pig farming industry. Currently, there is no effective treatment for porcine parvovirus disease except for prevention and control measures.

Backgrounds: Negative cognitive styles (NCSs) have been identified as risk factor for the onset of depression. However, little empirical evidence is available to support its role in psychological disorders in the perinatal period. Moreover, less is known about the underlying mechanism in the relation between NCSs and depression in pregnant women.

Under heavy load conditions, bearings are subjected to non-uniform and frequently changing loads, which leads to randomness in the spatial distribution of bearing degradation characteristics. Aiming at the problem that the traditional degradation index cannot accurately reflect the degradation state of heavy-duty bearings in the whole life cycle, a new degradation evaluation method based on multi-domain features is proposed in this paper, which aims to capture the early degradation point of heavy-duty bearings and characterize their degradation trend. Firstly, the energy entropy feature is obtained by improving the wavelet packet decomposition, and the original multi-domain feature set is constructed by combining the time domain and frequency domain features.
