Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has garnered increasing attention as a safe and effective peripheral neuromodulation technique in various clinical and cognitive neuroscience fields. However, there is ongoing debate about whether the commonly used earlobe control interferes with the objective assessment of taVNS regulatory effects. This study aims to further explore the regulatory effects of taVNS and earlobe stimulation (ES) on alertness levels and physiological indicators following 24 h of sleep deprivation (SD), based on previous findings that both taVNS and ES showed significant positive effects.

Background: In the face of inevitable declines in alertness and fatigue resulting from sleep deprivation, effective countermeasures are essential for maintaining performance. External trigeminal nerve stimulation (eTNS) presents a potential avenue for regulating alertness by activating the locus coeruleus and reticular activating system.

Methods: Here, we conducted a within-subject study with 66 habitual nappers, subjecting them to afternoon nap-deprivation and applying either 20-minute of 120 Hz eTNS or sham stimulation.

The existence of microbiome in human tumors has been determined widely, but evaluating the contribution of intratumoral bacteria and fungi to tumor immunity and prognosis from a pan-cancer perspective remains absent. We designed an improved microbial analysis pipeline to reduce interference from host sequences, complemented with integration analysis of intratumoral microbiota at species level with clinical indicators, tumor microenvironment, and prognosis across cancer types. We found that intratumoral microbiota is associated with immunophenotyping, with high-immunity subtypes showing greater bacterial and fungal richness compared to low-immunity groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how nitrogen (N) deposition and litter manipulation affect soil organic carbon (SOC) and enzyme activities in rubber plantations on Hainan Island through a micro-plot experiment with varying N additions and litter treatments.
  • Results indicated that increasing nitrogen reduced soil pH and altered nitrogen forms in the soil, with significant interactions observed between nitrogen levels and litter management.
  • Litter removal led to a substantial decrease in soil organic carbon components, particularly in the top 0-10 cm soil layer, while enzyme activities fluctuated with changes in nitrogen levels and litter treatments, showcasing their complex interdependencies.

Increasing evidence suggests a correlation between changes in the composition of gut microbiota and sleep-related phenotypes. However, it remains uncertain whether these associations indicate a causal relationship. The genome-wide association study summary statistics data of gut microbiota ( = 18,340) was downloaded from the MiBioGen consortium and the data of sleep-related phenotypes were derived from the UK Biobank, the Medical Research Council-Integrative Epidemiology Unit, Jones SE, the FinnGen consortium.

A new Yb-based three-dimensional metal-organic framework with free Lewis basic sites, [Yb(ddbpdc)(CHOH)] (referred to as ACBP-6), from YbCl and (6,8)-6,8-dimethyl-7,8-dihydro-6-[1,5]dioxonino[7,6-:8,9-']dipyridine-3,11-dicarboxylic acid (Hddbpdc) was synthesized by a conventional solvothermal method. Two Yb are connected by three carboxyl groups to form the [Yb(CO)] binuclear unit, which is further bridged by two carboxyl moieties to produce a tetranuclear secondary building unit. With further ligation of the ligand ddbpdc, a 3-D MOF with helical channels is constructed.

Increased microglial NADPH oxidase (NOX) production may make an important contribution to the increased incidence and severity of ischemic stroke associated with diabetes. Imidazoline receptors are closely associated with neuroprotection, but the neuroprotective effects of the selective I-imidazoline receptor ligand 2-(2-benzofuranyl)-2-imidazoline (2BFI) in diabetes has not been established. The effect of 2BFI on microglial NOX production was investigated using a co-culture of neurons and microglia, and the effect on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury was determined in diabetic rats.

The chemiluminescence (CL) analysis based on label-free dual-aptasensor was developed for simultaneous detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and chloramphenicol (CAP) in food. Magnetic microspheres and polystyrene microspheres used as separating and immobilizing carriers which immobilized the two different captured DNA, respectively. Then these carriers were put in the mixture of ATPs, CAPs, ATP-binding aptamers and CAP-binding aptamers to make one-pot label-free recognized interaction.

The miniaturized optical emission spectrometry (OES) devices based on various microplasma excitation sources provide reliable tools for on-site analysis of heavy metal pollution, while the development of convenient and efficient sample introduction approaches is essential to improve their performances for field analysis. Herein, a small activated carbon electrode tip is employed as solid support to preconcentrate heavy metals in water and subsequently served as an inner electrode of the coaxial dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) to generate microplasma. In this case, heavy metal analytes in water are first adsorbed on the surface of the activated carbon electrode tip via a simple liquid-solid phase transformation during the sample loading process, and then, fast released to produce OES during the DBD microplasma excitation process.

Lathyrus odoratus (sweet pea) is an ornamental plant with exceptional floral scent, previously used as an experimental organism in the early development of Mendelian genetics. However, its terpene synthases (TPSs), which act as metabolic gatekeepers in the biosynthesis of volatile terpenoids, remain to be characterized. Auto-Headspace Solid-phase Microextraction/Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of floral volatile terpene constituents from seven sweet pea cultivars identified α-bergamotene, linalool, (-)-α-cubebene, geraniol, β-caryophyllene and β-sesquiphellandrene as the dominant compounds.

The synthetic tetrapeptide N-acetyl-seryl-aspartyl-lysyl-proline (Ac-SDKP) has been shown to be a modulator of molecular aspects of the fibrosis pathway. This study reveals that Ac-SDKP exerts an anti-fibrotic effect on human type II alveolar epithelial cells (A549), which are a source of myofibroblasts once exposed to TGF-β1, by decreasing the expression of heat shock protein 27 (HSP27). We used A549 cells in vitro to detect morphological evidence of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by phase-contrast microscopy.
