The as-prepared PtxCu1-x nanoarchitectures are confirmed as consisting of the integration of initial small alloy nanoparticles (NPs), resulting in an interconnected nanoporous structure. The electrochemical experiments indicate that these PtxCu1-x nanocatalysts exhibit atomic composition dependent catalytic activity, although the surfaces of all the catalysts were characterized to be featured with a Pt enrichment structure.

Conventionally, by directly observing the gas sensing response, it is difficult to build quantitative relationship with the intrinsic structure of the material. To break through this difficulty, resonant cantilever is employed as gravimetric tool to implement molecule adsorption experiment.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between the expression levels of serum let-7c miRNA and the clinical diagnosis of breast cancer (BC). The circulating let-7c levels of 90 BC patients and 64 healthy controls were determined by performing a reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay.

Pulmonary fibrosis is an epithelial-mesenchymal disorder in which TGF-β1 plays a central role in pathogenesis. Here we show that follistatin-like 1 (FSTL1) differentially regulates TGF-β and bone morphogenetic protein signaling, leading to epithelial injury and fibroblast activation.

A top-down nanofabrication technology is developed to integrate multiple SAMs (self-assembled monolayers) into regioselective patterns. With ultraviolet light exposure through regioselectively hollowed hard mask, an existing SAM at designated microregions can be removed and a dissimilar kind of SAM can be regrown there. By repeating the photolithography-like process cycle, diverse kinds of SAM building blocks can be laid out as a desired pattern in one microfluidic channel.

Eps8 was highly expressed in the highly invasive breast cancer cell line MDA-MB‑231 compared with the weakly invasive breast cancer cell lines MCF7 and MDA-MB‑468. MCF7 cell line stably expressing Eps8 was established by G418 screening, and the ectopic expression of Eps8 enhanced MCF7 breast cancer cell growth and survival as assessed by MTT analysis, cell viability and liquid colony formation, whereas the lentiviral expression of Eps8 shRNA in MDA-MB‑231 cells resulted in a significant reduction in cellular growth and proliferation in vitro and in vivo.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFunctionalized nanoporous materials have been developed recently as bio/chemical sensing materials. Due to the huge specific surface of the nano-materials for molecular adsorption, high hopes have been placed on gravimetric detection with micro/nano resonant cantilevers for ultra-sensitive sensing of low-concentration bio/chemical substances. In order to enhance selectivity of the gravimetric resonant sensors to the target molecules, it is crucial to modify specific groups onto the pore-surface of the nano-materials.

As hallmarks of gene amplification, DMs often carry oncogenes and drug-resistance genes and play important roles in malignant tumour progression and drug resistance. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling pathway is frequently dysregulated in human malignant tumours, which induces genomic instability, but it remains unclear whether a close relationship exists between MAPK signalling and DMs.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFST (follistatin) is essential for skeletal muscle development, but the intracellular signalling networks that regulate FST-induced effects are not well defined. We sought to investigate whether FST promotes the proliferation of myoblasts through the PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase)/Akt (protein kinase B)/mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) signalling. In the present study, we transfected the pEGFP-duFST plasmid and added PI3K and mTOR inhibitors to the medium of duck primary myoblasts.

This enzyme is a complex which contains the MoFe protein encoded by nifDK and the Fe protein encoded by nifH. In addition to nifHDK, nifHDK-like genes were found in some Archaea and Firmicutes, but their function is unclear.

However, the mechanism whereby the upstream genes or factors directly regulate CCND1 expression remains unknown. By analyzing the 5'-UTR region of the CCND1 gene, we found that this region contains an octamer motif (ATTTTGCAT), which suggests that the expression of CCND1 might be directly associated with octamer-binding transcription factor 4 (OCT4).

In mice, IRE1α plays an essential role in extraembryonic tissues.

The use of synthetic polypropylene mesh for hernia surgical repair and the correction of female pelvic organ prolapse have been controversial due to increasing post-operative complications, including mesh erosion, chronic pain, infection and support failure. These morbidities may be related to a mismatch of mechanical properties between soft tissues and the mesh. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the biomechanical behavior of Prolene polypropylene mesh (Ethicon, Sommerville, NJ, USA), which is widely used for a variety of surgical repair procedures.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional survey from August 2002 to February 2011 by use of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 and QLQ-CR38 questionnaires of 438 patients who underwent curative surgery for rectal cancer. Patients who were followed up for a minimum of 6 months, had no relevant major comorbidities and whose disease had not recurred were asked to complete both questionnaires.
Background: Transposition of great arteries (TGA) represents the most frequent cyanotic heart defect diagnosed in the neonatal period. Several genes had been identified to be associated with the pathogenesis of dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA). These genes are located in different chromosomes and their mutations can only explain few clinical cases.

Introduction: This study was conducted to compare catheter function, dialysis adequacy, and dialysis-related complications among patients receiving long-term dialysis via Palindrome catheter, Permcath catheter, and arteriovenous fistula (AVF) as vascular access.
Materials And Methods: Forty-three patients undergoing dialysis with Permcath catheter, 49 with Palindrome catheter, and 56 with AVF were recruited. Urea clearance (KT/V), urea reduction rate, and the highest blood flow at the arteriovenous junction during dialysis were determined during the dialysis sessions.
