Article Synopsis
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) involves persistent lung tissue injury and abnormal healing, with key roles played by myofibroblasts transitioning from fibroblasts and depositing extracellular matrix (ECM).
  • Research using engineered ECM micropatterns revealed that isotropic fibroblasts exhibited invasive characteristics and high expression of specific markers, while anisotropic fibroblasts adopted a more normal remodeling phenotype.
  • The study highlights how cellular topology affects fibroblast behavior and interactions with the ECM, which could contribute to worsening fibrosis and potentially create an environment that promotes cancer development.

The electrocatalytic mechanisms of electrocatalysts were constrained by the disparities between the genuine catalytic interface and construction interface. This work demonstrated the relationship between the CuPt nano-alloy atomic ratios and their catalytic performance. Firstly, we developed a facile synthesis of surfactant-free CuPt nano-alloys with tunable Cu atomic ratios (ranging from 35 to 72 at%) under ambient conditions.

Methane-propane coaromatization (MPCA) upgrades two abundant and inexpensive light alkanes into value-added aromatic products. While Ga-loaded MFI zeolites represent by far the most promising catalysts for MPCA reaction, they often contain a sizable portion of Ga species at the external surface of zeolites, which are remote from the Brønsted acid sites (BAS) within MFI pores and thus inefficient for MPCA. Here, we show that Ga can be introduced into MFI pores at fairly high loadings via a simple cocrystallization approach, yielding catalysts possessing well-dispersed Ga sites predominantly residing inside the pores and framework.

Background: This meta-analysis aimed to determine the incidence and overall risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) related to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs).

Methods: We systematically searched all cohort studies, including the available MACE data in cancer patients receiving ICIs, in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, from their inception to September 5, 2023. The primary outcome was the incidence of MACEs associated with ICI exposure, and the secondary outcome was the overall risk of MACEs associated with ICI exposure versus non-ICI exposure controls.

Carbenes are highly reactive intermediates central to various organic transformations, particularly within photochemistry. This study investigates siloxy carbenes generated from acyl silanes a 1,2-silyl shift, focusing on their generation and reactivity in excited states, using the multiconfiguration perturbation theory (CASPT2//CASSCF/PCM). Our findings reveal that the presence of an aryl group conjugated with the carbonyl moiety substantially lowers the excitation energy of the singlet nπ* state, enabling the 1,2-Brook rearrangement to proceed directly on the singlet hypersurface.

The H production using NH splitting (OHzS) was often constrained by the requirement for insufficient stability, distinct catalysts at the anode and cathode, and the high-cost electrocatalyst associated with confined activity. This work verified the efficacy of surfactant-free branched CuAu nano-alloy as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for H production. Benefiting from its favorable electronic structure and surfactant-free surface, surfactant-free CuAu nano-alloy demonstrated a reduced over-potential compared with pure Cu, pure Au, and CuAu nano-alloy prepared by surfactant.

Background: The trend of postponing childbearing age is prevalent worldwide. Advanced paternal age (APA) is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and offspring health. However, the underlying mechanism by which paternal aging affects the risk of offspring neuropsychiatric disorders is unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study uses environmental DNA methods to find a direct correlation between plankton diversity and distance from the shore, with nutrient factors like inorganic nitrogen significantly affecting community distribution.
  • * Results indicate that changes in coastal habitats have altered plankton community succession from random to predictable patterns, while environmental variability, such as nutrient availability, affects the stability and vulnerability of offshore ecosystems.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the structural characteristics and transferability of a multidrug-resistance (MDR) plasmid from a seafood-derived strain, focusing on its antimicrobial resistance genes and how these can spread to other bacteria.
  • - Researchers sequenced the plasmids pVP52-1 and pVP52-2 and found that pVP52-1 contains 12 antimicrobial resistance genes, making it responsible for resistance to multiple antibiotics, whereas pVP52-2 had no resistance genes.
  • - Experiments showed that only pVP52-1 could be transferred to other bacterial strains, significantly increasing their resistance profiles, highlighting the potential for widespread antibiotic resistance in foodborne pathogens.

Thick polycrystalline perovskite films synthesized by using solution processes show great potential in X-ray detection applications. However, due to the evaporation of the solvent, many pinholes and defects appear in the thick films, which deteriorate their optoelectronic properties and diminish their X-ray detection performance. Therefore, the preparation of large area and dense perovskite thick films is desired.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are core components of the field of reproductive medicine, encompassing multiple pivotal stages of early development from gamete maturation and fertilization to embryo development. Against the backdrop of a deteriorating trend of global decline in fertility rates, patients with infertility problems increasingly turn to ARTs to realize their dreams of parenthood. However, concomitant with this trend is a growing apprehension regarding the potential adverse effects of ARTs.

The ubiquitous presence of antimicrobial-resistant organisms and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) constitutes a major threat to global public safety. Tetracycline (TET) is a common antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth and is frequently detected in aquatic environments. Although TET may display coselection for resistance, limited knowledge is available on whether and how it might influence plasmid-mediated conjugation.

A paper-based surface enhancement of a Raman scattering substrate consisting of silver-nanowires stacked on glass-fiber filter paper was prepared. At the same time, the DNA-embedding molecule Eva Green was introduced as a signaling molecule for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify target genes and the method was developed into a rapid molecular diagnostic system.

Apple is an important cash crop in China, and it is susceptible to fungal infections that have deleterious effects on its yield. Apple bitter rot caused by Colletorichum gloeosporioides is one of the most severe fungal diseases of apple. Salicylic acid (SA) is a key signalling molecule in the plant disease resistance signalling pathways.

In the world's first pig-to-human cardiac cytomegalovirus (PCMV), xenotransplant and elevated levels of porcine key factors contributing to patient mortality were considered. This has renewed attention on PCMV, a virus widely prevalent in pigs. Currently, there are no effective drugs or vaccines targeting PCMV, and its high detection difficulty poses challenges for prevention and control research.

Purpose: Results from studies of extended capecitabine after the standard adjuvant chemotherapy in early stage triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) were inconsistent, and only low-dose capecitabine from the SYSUCC-001 trial improved disease-free survival (DFS). Adjustment of the conventional adjuvant chemotherapy doses affect the prognosis and may affect the efficacy of subsequent treatments. This study investigated whether the survival benefit of the SYSUCC-001 trial was affected by dose adjustment of the standard adjuvant chemotherapy or not.

CRISPR/Cas9 technology, combined with somatic cell nuclear transplantation (SCNT), represents the primary approach to generating gene-edited pigs. The inefficiency in acquiring gene-edited nuclear donors is attributed to low editing and delivery efficiency, both closely linked to the selection of CRISPR/Cas9 forms. However, there is currently no direct method to evaluate the efficiency of CRISPR/Cas9 editing in porcine genomes.
