Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the effectiveness of three diagnostic techniques—capsule endoscopy, CT enterography, and enteroscopy—for detecting small bowel bleeding, highlighting the need for more research in this area.
  • - Findings showed enteroscopy had a significantly higher diagnostic rate compared to both capsule endoscopy and CT enterography, indicating it is the most dependable method for diagnosing suspected small bowel bleeding.
  • - The results also revealed that successful completion of the docking inspection during enteroscopy greatly improves diagnostic rates, while there was no significant difference in outcomes between one-day and non-one-day enteroscopy groups.

Background: The fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda) threatens maize production worldwide, and benzoxazinoids (Bxs) are known as the main secondary metabolites produced by maize to defend against FAW. However, we do not yet know whether and in what ways certain endophytes in the digestive system of FAW can metabolize Bxs, thus enhancing the fitness of FAW when feeding on maize.

Results: Using Bxs as the sole carbon and nitrogen source, we isolated Pantoea dispersa from the guts of FAW.

Currently, due to limited long-term evidence, there remains some controversy surrounding the recommended postoperative monitoring strategy for primary low-risk gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). This study recruited a total of 532 patients diagnosed with very low-risk and low-risk GISTs who underwent endoscopic resection from 2015 to 2021, including 460 very low-risk patients and 72 low-risk patients. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to evaluate the clinical and pathological characteristics of GIST patients, and Kaplan-Meier methods were employed for survival analysis.

Sterilization of Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) is a key tool to ensure their freshness for post-production transportation. However, in the face of the specific problem of quality deterioration caused by the increase of storage environment temperature due to unexpected circumstances or the prolongation of temporary storage time, it is still a technical challenge to realize intelligent decision-making and higher sterilization efficiency. In this paper, we propose an intelligent UV-Ozone sterilization system suitable for cold chain transportation of Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis).

Pathogens endanger food safety, agricultural productivity, and human health. Those pathogens are spread through direct/indirect contact, airborne transmission and food/waterborne transmission, and some cause severe health consequences. As the population grows and global connections intensify, the transmission of infectious diseases expands.

Biofouling and bacterial infections are significant challenges in biomedical devices. In this study, a biocompatible dual-functional coating with antimicrobial and antifouling properties is developed by co-depositing the zwitterionic copolymer and silver nanoparticles via a dopamine-assisted strategy. Inspired by mussel adhesion, the coating exhibits substrate-independent adhesion as a result of the formation of irreversible covalent bonds.

The natural extracellular matrix (ECM) consists of a continuous integrated fibrin network and a negatively charged proteoglycan-based matrix. In this work, we report a novel three-dimensional nanofiber hydrogel composite that mimics the natural ECM structure, exhibiting both degradability and mechanical characteristics comparable to that of tumor tissue. The embedded nanofiber improves the hydrogel mechanical properties, and varying the fiber density can match the elastic modulus of different tumor tissues (1.

The dysfunction of matriptase, a membrane-anchored protease, is highly related to the progression of skin and breast cancers. Epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced matriptase activation and cancer invasion are known but with obscure mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate a vesicular-trafficking-mediated interplay between matriptase and EGF signaling in cancer promotion.

The abuse of olaquindox (OLA) as both an antimicrobial agent and a growth promoter poses significant threats to the environment and human health. While nanoreactors have proven effective in hazard detection, their widespread adoption has been hindered by tedious chemical processes and limited functionality. In this study, we introduce a novel green self-assembly strategy utilizing invertase, horseradish peroxidase, antibodies, and gold nanoclusters to form an aggregation-induced emission-type zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoreactor.

Macrophage-driven immune dysfunction of the intestinal mucosa is involved in the pathophysiology of ulcerative colitis (UC). Emerging evidence indicates that there is an elevation in miR-31-5p levels in UC, which is accompanied by a downregulation of adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) expression. Nevertheless, the precise influence of miR-31-5p on macrophage polarization and the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier in UC remains to be fully elucidated.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic non-specific inflammatory bowel disease characterized by inflammation and ulcer formation of the intestinal mucosa. Due to its high recurrence rate, prolonged course, limited curative options, and significant impact on patients' quality of life, along with a notable potential for malignant transformation, UC is designated as a refractory global health challenge by the World Health Organization (WHO). The elucidation of the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies for UC requires further in-depth investigation.

Metabolite isomers play diverse and crucial roles in various metabolic processes. However, in untargeted metabolomics analysis, it remains a great challenge to distinguish between the constitutional isomers and enantiomers of amine-containing metabolites due to their similar chemical structures and physicochemical properties. In this work, the triplex stable isotope -phosphoryl amino acids labeling (SIPAL) is developed to identify and relatively quantify the amine-containing metabolites and their isomers by using chiral phosphorus reagents coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectroscopy.
