Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed how calcific (Ca) burden affects the accuracy of coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) in assessing plaque burden and composition, using near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) as a comparison standard.
  • - Involving 64 patients and 186 vessels, results indicated that while Ca did not significantly alter correlations between NIRS-IVUS and CTA at the segment and lesion levels, it did affect their agreement at the cross-sectional level, specifically regarding lipid and Ca components.
  • - Ultimately, the presence of Ca burden influenced measurements and predictions of plaque volume and composition between NIRS-IVUS and CTA, highlighting the importance of considering coronary calcification in clinical evaluations.

Background: Coronary artery calcium score (CACS) is an established marker of coronary artery disease (CAD) and has been extensively used to stratify risk in asymptomatic individuals. However, the value of CACS in predicting plaque morphology in patients with advanced CAD is less established. The present analysis aims to assess the association between CACS and plaque characteristics detected by near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) imaging in patients with obstructive CAD.

  • Aortic dissection (AD) is a severe condition with unclear mechanisms, highlighting the need for effective animal models to study its development.
  • The study created a mouse model using male ApoE mice treated with β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) and varying doses of angiotensin II (AngII) to assess AD formation over different time periods.
  • Results indicated that a combination of BAPN and high-dose AngII for 2 weeks significantly increased AD occurrence compared to lower doses or longer durations, with notable mortality rates observed in certain treatment groups.

Background: Electrocardiography (ECG) plays a very important role in various cardiovascular diseases and elevated D-dimer in serum associated with thrombosis. In patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), immense pieces of evidence showed that ECG abnormalities or elevated D-dimer in serum occurred frequently. However, it remains unclear whether ECG abnormalities combined with elevated D-dimer could be a new risk predictor in patients with COVID-19.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and the increasing severity of coronary artery tortuosity (CAT) in patients with non-stenosed coronaries.

Methods: A total of 396 patients who underwent coronary angiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) between August 2020 and July 2021 were included in this single-center retrospective study after excluding patients with significant coronary artery disease (≥50% stenosis). Patients were divided into two groups: no or mild coronary artery tortuosity (N/M-CAT) and moderate to severe coronary artery tortuosity (M/S-CAT) and laboratory electrocardiographic, echocardiographic, and CPET parameters were compared between two groups.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a major complication of diabetes, but its underlying mechanisms still remain unclear. The multifunctional protein Y-box binding protein-1 (YB-1) plays an important role in cardiac pathogenesis by regulating cardiac apoptosis, cardiac fibrosis, and pathological remodeling, whereas its role in chronic DCM requires further investigation. Here, we report that the phosphorylation of YB-1 at serine102 (S102) was markedly elevated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mouse hearts and in high glucose-treated cardiomyocytes, whereas total YB-1 protein levels were significantly reduced.

Chronic diabetes accelerates vascular dysfunction often resulting in cardiomyopathy but underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Recent studies have shown that the deregulated unfolded protein response (UPR) dependent on highly conserved IRE1α-spliced X-box- binding protein (XBP1s) and the resulting endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER-Stress) plays a crucial role in the occurrence and development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). In the present study, we determined whether targeting MAPK/ERK pathway using MEK inhibitor U0126 could ameliorate DCM by regulating IRE1α-XBP1s pathway.
