The zinc finger proteins belong to the largest family of regulatory transcription factors, which play an important role in growth and development in animal and plant systems. SUPERMAN-like zinc finger protein gene has only one "finger like" motif. A pair of degenerate primers was designed according to the conserved regions, and 3 kinds of EST of this family were isolated from cotton through RT-PCR.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on using molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS) to improve fiber strength in cotton by leveraging two major quantitative trait loci (QTLs) from an elite germ-plasm line (7235).
  • QTLfs-1 was found to account for over 30% of the phenotypic variation in the breeding populations, while QTLfs-2 contributed around 12.5% and was identified in different fiber lines but worked independently from QTLfs-1.
  • The research demonstrated that combining both QTLs through MAS notably increased selection efficiency for fiber strength across various breeding populations, showcasing a successful strategy for enhancing desirable traits in breeding programs.
