  • Post-viral olfactory dysfunction (PVOD) is a common symptom of long COVID that lacks effective treatments, prompting a systematic review of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for potential solutions.
  • The review included various studies evaluating TCM, specifically acupuncture and acupoint injection, which demonstrated some effectiveness for PVOD, although the overall quality of evidence was deemed low.
  • While some trials showed positive outcomes, more rigorous and well-designed studies are necessary to confirm the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture and acupoint injection in treating PVOD.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic fatigue is a key symptom of long COVID, and this study investigates how Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) can help alleviate this fatigue.* -
  • Thirteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with a total of 1,632 participants were analyzed, revealing that some herbal treatments, like Bufei Huoxue capsules and Ludangshen liquid, showed potential in reducing fatigue levels.* -
  • However, the overall evidence is considered low to very low in quality due to bias concerns, indicating a need for more extensive and higher-quality studies to validate these findings.*

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 13 systematic reviews (SRs) covering 265 studies with over 33,000 participants were analyzed, focusing on acupoint stimulation, although most studies were of low quality and many included non-randomized trials.
  • * The findings indicated that TCM external interventions were significantly more effective than placebo for maintaining smoking abstinence over 6 months to 1 year, and they also helped reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms without serious adverse events reported.

Approximately 59 % of patients with breast cancer with one or two sentinel lymph nodes (1-2 SLN) macrometastases do not benefit from axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), which may also incur morbidities. It is necessary to evaluate the association between various clinicopathological characteristics and non-sentinel lymph node metastases (non-SLNM) in patients with breast cancer with 1-2 SLN macrometastases, and determine whether they 1-2 should avoid ALND. Eight electronic literature databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journal, Wanfang, and Chinese Biomedical Literature) were searched from their inception to June 30, 2023, and two reviewers independently extracted the data and assessed the risk of bias.

Background: As ultrasound-guided percutaneous liver biopsy (PLB) has become a standard and important method in the management of liver disease in our country, a periodical audit of the major complications is needed.

Aim: To determine the annual incidence of major complications following ultrasound-guided PLB and to identify variables that are significantly associated with an increased risk of major complications.

Methods: A total of 1857 consecutive cases of PLB were included in our hospital from January 2021 to December 2021.

Background: Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are used to improve survival in colorectal cancer but adverse effects can be a problem. Severe adverse effects may result in dose reduction or cessation of treatment, which have an impact on survival. Coriolus versicolor (Trametes versicolor or 'Turkey Tail') mushroom and its extracts have been used by cancer patients to help with adverse effects.

To provide a low-cost photocatalyst and new methodology for the utilization of waste rice noodle (WRN), a carbon quantum dots/zinc oxide (CQDs/ZnO) composite using WRN as the raw material was synthesized and characterized. The CQDs/ZnO composite based on WRN exhibited a highly efficient photocatalytic degradation effect on various organic pollutants and could be a good alternative for commercial ZnO. For methylene blue, the CQDs/ZnO composite showed a good degradation rate of 99.

Backgrounds: Percutaneous ultrasound (US) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided pancreatic biopsies are widely accepted in the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases. Studies comparing the diagnostic performance of US- and EUS-guided pancreatic biopsies are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic yields of US- and EUS-guided pancreatic biopsies and identify the risk factors for inconclusive biopsies.

In this work, a cost-effective wax was synthesized from waste cooking oil (WCO), and its properties including melting point, color, hardness, combustion performance and micro-morphology were tested and analyzed. The obtained results showed that the epoxy waste cooking oil had lighter color, higher melting point and hardness than that of original WCO, which could be used as wax. Moreover, introducing stearic acid further improved the performances of WCO-based wax.

  • Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) is a common kidney condition in children that can lead to chronic renal failure in 15-20% of cases, and Huaiqihuang (HQH) herbal medicine is often used to treat it alongside conventional treatments.
  • A study reviewed several randomized controlled trials to assess the effectiveness and safety of HQH in children with HSPN, finding that HQH combined with conventional medicine improved clinical outcomes compared to conventional medicine alone.
  • The results indicated significant improvements in cure rates and reductions in urine abnormalities without serious side effects, suggesting that HQH may serve as a beneficial complementary therapy, though further high-quality research is needed.
