A new strain of high ammonia nitrogen tolerant and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacterium TN-14 was isolated from the environment. Its physiological and biochemical characteristics and molecular identification, performences of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic, the abilities of resistance to ammonia nitrogen as well as the decontamination abilities were studied, respectively. It was preliminary identified as Acinetobacter sp.

Background: Postoperative pain management is of great importance in perioperative anesthetic care. Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block has been described as an effective technique to reduce postoperative pain and morphine consumption after open lower abdominal operations. Meanwhile, local anesthetic infiltration (LAI) is also commonly used as a traditional method.

Aims/introduction: Elevation of 2-h plasma glucose (2-h PG) levels keeps step with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels elevation, but some individuals show dominant elevation of 2-h PG and others FPG. We analyzed dependent and independent relationships between 2-h PG and FPG, and investigated the factors regulating 2-h PG and FPG.

Materials And Methods: In 1,657 Japanese participants who underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test at the initial examination for a medical check-up, we carried out simple linear regression analysis between 2-h PG and FPG levels on the three patterns of independent variables.

Background: Anaphylactic reactions during anesthesia and operation are common and life threatening. Follow-up investigation is necessary for avoiding potential re-exposure of the patients to the offending drugs. The purpose of this study was to assess cellular allergen stimulation test (CAST) as a diagnostic instrument in immunoglobulin E (IgE)- and non-IgE-mediated anaphylactic reactions.

Objective: To investigate the clinical features and operation treatment of the congenital middle ear cholesteatoma.

Method: A retrospective review of clinical and surgical records of 10 patients with congenital middle ear cholesteatoma were performed. All patients were treated by surgeries,5 of 10 cases deal with one-stage tympanoplasty after drum exploration by external auditory meatus, 3 cases dealed with closed mastoidotympanectomy and tympanomastoidectomy, 2 cases dealed with open mastoidotympanectomy and tympanomastoidectomy.

Background: Xixin has been widely used as a traditional Chinese medicine for headache, toothache and inflammatory diseases. Clinical investigation indicated that adverse drug reactions occurred with an overdose of xixin, but the toxic mechanism of xixin in vivo based on trace elements has not been researched yet.

Objective: To explore the in vivo toxic mechanism of xixin induced by trace elements.

The interpenetrating morphology formed by the electron donor and acceptor materials is critical for the performance of polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic (PV) cells. In this work we carried out a systematic investigation on a high PV efficiency (>6%) BHJ system consisting of a newly developed 5,6-difluorobenzo[c] thiadiazole-based copolymer, PFBT-T20TT, and a fullerene derivative. Grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements reveal the lower-ordered nature of the BHJ system as well as an intermixing morphology with intercalation of fullerene molecules between the PFBT-T20TT lamella.

A 12-year-old boy presented to our emergency department after being shot in the face. A computed tomographic scan revealed a bullet through the posterolateral wall of the maxillary sinus into the right infratemporal area, just adjacent to the skull base. We elected transantral approach with the help of endoscopy and C-arm.

Background: Pain might be associated with cognitive impairment in humans. However, the characterization of such effects in a preclinical model and the investigation of the underlying mechanisms remain largely to be determined. We therefore sought to establish a system to determine the effect of pain on cognitive function in mice.

A novel catalyst was successfully prepared, which shows superior catalytic activity and stability toward reduction of 4-nitrophenol due to a unique photo-synergistic catalytic mechanism that relies on a synergy between thermal active sites and photogenerated electrons in NiNb2O6 nanoparticles.

Piggery wastewater was used as a cheap alternative medium for a bioflocculant-producing bacterial flora B-737. Effects of COD concent, addition of ammonium oxalate or phosphate on the cell growth and bioflocculant yield were investigated, and the fermentation kinetics was studied in the optimal culture media. The results showed that the piggery wastewater (COD was about 3000 mg x L(-1), TN was about 170 mg x L(-1)) had a suitable C/N ratio for the growth and fermentation of flora B-737, with addition of only 1.

Pentamethylquercetin (PMQ) has been shown to possess glucose-lowering properties, but its effect on renal fibrosis in diabetes is still unclear. This study was designed to investigate the effect of PMQ on renal fibrosis and the underlying mechanisms in spontaneous type II diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rats and mesangial cells in high glucose. We found that in Goto-Kakizaki rats, PMQ treatment attenuated glomerular volume, glycogen deposition, renal collagen and fibronectin accumulation, in addition to amelioration of diabetic symptoms, including reduction of urine volume and urine glucose levels.

Background: Our novel approach is a hybrid between cylindrical abdominoperineal resection and single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS). We report the clinical application of this technique and present preliminary data that shows this approach to be an effective tool for resection of low rectal cancer.

Methods: Twenty patients with endoscopy-considered and biopsy-proven malignant lesions were required to undergo abdominal computed tomography examination for determining tumor stage.

Background: Tracheostomy should be considered to replace endotracheal intubation in patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation (MV). However, the optimal timing for tracheostomy is still a topic of debate. The present study aimed to investigate whether early percutaneous dilational tracheostomy (PDT) can reduce duration of MV, and to further verify whether early PDT can reduce sedative use, shorten intensive care unit (ICU) stay, decrease the incidence of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), and increase successful weaning and ICU discharge rate.

VEGF165b is an endogenous transcriptional splice variant of VEGF and has been shown to have a therapeutic potency as an anti-cancer agent. In this report, a fusion gene consisting of a human VEGF165b and a human albumin (HSA) gene was constructed and then inserted into a pPIC9k vector. The recombinant fusion protein, rhHSA-VEGF165b, was over expressed in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris under the control of AOX1 promoter.

To solve the problems of ammonia inhibition and discharging difficulty in continuous dry fermentation of pig manure, under the experimental conditions of temperature of (25 +/- 2) degrees C and organic loading rate (TS) of 4.44 g x (L x d) (-1), a lab-scale up plug-flow type anaerobic reactor (UPAR) was setup to investigate biogas production, ammonia inhibition, effluent liquidity, and the feasibility of continuous dry fermentation of pig manure using up plug-flow type anaerobic reactor. The experiment was operated for 160 days using the pig manure with four different TS mass fractions (20%, 25%, 30%, 35%) as feeding.

The age-dependency of opioid analgesia and tolerance has been noticed in both clinical observation and laboratory studies. Evidence shows that many molecular and cellular events that play essential roles in opioid analgesia and tolerance are actually age-dependent. For example, the expression and functions of endogenous opioid peptides, multiple types of opioid receptors, G protein subunits that couple to opioid receptors, and regulators of G protein signaling (RGS proteins) change with development and age.
