Purpose: Dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) is the most severe condition in thyroid eye disease (TED); however, no study has been conducted to assess quality of life in these patients to date. The aim of this study was to evaluate vision-related quality of life in TED patients with DON using a Chinese version of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (CHI-VFQ-25).

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of lutein and lycopene supplementation on carotid artery intima-media thickness (CAIMT) in subjects with subclinical atherosclerosis. A total of 144 subjects aged 45-68 years were recruited from local communities. It has been proposed that interface morphology affects the recombination rate for electrons and holes at donor-acceptor heterojunctions in thin film organic photovoltaic cells. The optimal morphology is one where there is disorder at the heterointerface and order in the bulk of the thin films, maximizing both the short circuit current and open circuit voltage. We show that an amorphous, buried functionalized molecular squaraine donor layer can undergo an "inverted" quasi-epitaxial growth during postdeposition processing, whereby crystallization is seeded by a subsequently deposited self-assembled nanocrystalline acceptor C60 cap layer.

We experimentally demonstrate a highly filtering-tolerant multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) process for very aggressively spectrum-shaped 9-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (9-QAM)-like polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signal to achieve 400-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) channels on the 100-GHz grid for ultra-long-haul reach and high tolerance of the filter narrowing effect caused by reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs). We successfully transmitted 8 channels 480-Gb/s super-Nyquist (channel occupancy much less than signal baud rate) WDM signals at 100-GHz grid over 25 × 200 km conventional single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) with post Raman amplification and 25 ROADMs at a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4b/s/Hz, after excluding the 20% soft-decision forward-error-correction (FEC) overhead. The system performance is significantly enhanced by the MMEQ based on 9-QAM-like constellations compared to the conventional 4 point QPSK constellation.

Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) is involved in neural stem cell self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation and survival. In this study, we aimed to further determine the role of mGluR5 in the development of hippocampus using mGluR5 deficit (mGluR5(-/-)) and wild type (mGluR5(+/+)) mice at different developmental ages. We showed that the number of BrdU, NeuroD and DCX immunopositive cells was reduced significantly in mGluR5(-/-) than in mGluR5(+/+) mice from postnatal 7 days (P7) to P28, but not at P60.

Three-dimensional (3D) BiOI/BiOCl composite microspheres with enhanced visible-light photodegradation activity of bisphenol-A (BPA) are synthesized by a simple, one-pot, template-free, solvothermal method using BiI(3) and BiCl(3) as precursors. These 3D hierarchical microspheres with heterojunction structures are composed of 2D nanosheets and have composition-dependent absorption properties in the ultraviolet and visible light regions. We demonstrate that solvent vapor annealing of small molecular weight organic heterojunctions can be used to independently control the interface and bulk thin-film morphologies, thereby modifying charge transport and exciton dissociation in these structures. As an example, we anneal diphenyl-functionalized squaraine (DPSQ)/C(60) heterojunctions before or after the deposition of C(60). Solvent vapor annealing of DPSQ before C(60) deposition results in molecular order at the heterointerface.

Hippocampal neurons of neonatal rats were cultured in serum-free culture medium for 5 days in vitro, and treated with the Rho-kinase inducer lysophosphatidic acid. Atomic force microscopy revealed that the numbers of level-1, -2 and -3 neurites protruding from rat hippocampal neurons was significantly reduced. After treatment with the Rho kinase inhibitor Y27632, a significant increase in the numbers of these neurites was observed.

We study a family of functionalized squaraine (fSQ) donors for absorbing in the near-infrared (NIR) and green spectral regions. The NIR-absorbing materials are the symmetric molecules 2,4-bis[4-(N-phenyl-1-naphthylamino)-2,6-dihydroxyphenyl]squaraine (1-NPSQ), 2,4-bis[4-(N,N-diphenylamino)-2,6 dihydroxyphenyl]squaraine, and 2,4-bis[4-(N,N-dipropylamino)-2,6-dihydroxyphenyl]squaraine. The synthesis of the first family of fully substituted cucurbit[n]uril is discussed, and the structural features of precursor glycolurils are highlighted in their importance to achieving higher homologues. The members of the family, where n = 5-7, have been fully characterized, and increased binding affinities have been identified for dioxane in CyP(6)Q[6] and adamantyl NH(3)(+) in CyP(7)Q[7]. The current study used the directed forgetting paradigm in implicit and explicit memory to investigate the concreteness effect. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded to explore the neural basis of this phenomenon. The behavioral results showed a clear concreteness effect in both implicit and explicit memory tests; participants responded significantly faster to concrete words than to abstract words.
