Article Synopsis
  • A three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactor (3D-BER) combined with pyrite-autotrophic denitrification (PAD) was developed to explore how electrical current affects the system's start-up period and efficiency.
  • Results indicated that higher current levels shorten start-up time and enhance nitrate removal efficiency, reaching about 88.2% after 13 days at 20 mA.
  • The study also found that optimal current levels (10 or 20 mA) supported the growth of beneficial denitrifying bacteria and boosted the expression of related functional genes, contributing to a better understanding of the system's denitrification mechanisms.

In this study, a pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (PAD) system, a polycaprolactone (PCL)-supported heterotrophic denitrification (PHD) system, and a pyrite+PCL-based split-mixotrophic denitrification (PPMD) system were constructed. The pyrite particle size was controlled in 1-3, 3-5, or 5-8 mm in both the PAD and PPMD systems to investigate the effect of pyrite particle size on the denitrification performance of autotrophic or split-mixotrophic bioreactors. It was found that the PAD system achieved the best denitrification efficiency with an average removal rate of 98.
