Background: National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the entrance exam for medical practice in China, and its general medical knowledge test (GMKT) evaluates abilities of medical students to comprehensively apply medical knowledge to clinical practice. This study aimed to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance, which would benefit medical schools in designing appropriate strategies and techniques to facilitate the transition from medical students to qualified medical practitioners.

Methods: In 1202 medical students, we conducted the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) and structural equation model (SEM) analyses to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance from 98 candidate variables including early life events, physical conditions, psychological and personality assessments, cognitive abilities, and socioeconomic conditions.

Micro-absorption spectroscopy is a useful tool for studying the biological characteristics of single cells. However, the weak spectral signal, due to low absorption caused by the tiny optical path length of the cell, makes the spectral data noisy and difficult to analyze. This paper describes a device for single-cell microspectroscopy measurement that integrates an optical fiber spectrometer and an image CCD within a microscopic system, allowing for the simultaneous acquisition of morphology information and the absorption spectrum of a single cell.

This study investigates the novel approach of synergizing desert vegetation with shelter forests to enhance windbreak efficiency in a transitional zone between the Korla oasis and the Taklimakan Desert, northwest China. Through an extensive field survey and experimental setup, we evaluated the impact of different shelterbelt configurations on wind speed reduction. Three types of shelter forests were examined: multi-row Poplar (Populus alba), single-row Jujube (Ziziphus jujube), and a mixed-species layout combining one row of Jujube and two rows of Poplar trees.

Multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder are two debilitating inflammatory demyelinating diseases of the CNS. Although grey matter alterations have been linked to both multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder in observational studies, it is unclear whether these associations indicate causal relationships between these diseases and grey matter changes.
